Big earthquake and tsunami in the Sea of Japan. Can't we go a day without some terrible poo poo happening? This year is gonna suck.

I'd tell y'all "Happy New Year" but we all know that'd be an utter lie. So, uh, have a New Year, GIP!

For some context about the video of the newscaster yelling out warnings, research about the big earthquake and tsunami in 2011 that killed nearly 20,000 people - mostly through the tsunami - found that the government originally significantly underestimated the strength of the tsunami, which caused lots of people who might have otherwise evacuated to stay in their homes. Ever since then, newscasters have been trained to overemphasize when telling people to evacuate and how dangerous tsunamis are.

E: quoting the video in question since it's a new thread

Any seismic event over 5 richter meant the town was razed to the ground here in Italy. Still holds true, even in areas after reconstruction from quakes with anti seismic precautions. This quake is/was 7 richter.

I live in Okinawa and I'm watching NHK now, and they've clarified that they are (as this is of course Japan) using the Japan Meteorological Agency Seismic Intensity Scale and this was a high six, where the maximum is a seven. So if you see something where the number 6 is thrown around, it isn't in reference to the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale used by the US Geological Survey, which maxes out at 10 (or 12 depending on who's using it).

Not looking forward to the damage assessment to come out of this.

Edit: NHK also saying that tsunami height may be underreported because some of the wave height readings from sensors are at the maximum measurable rating and can't be measured any higher than what's been reported. This is from their livestream at

The news I'm seeing rates it at a 7, the highest level on the scale (link in Japanese). I've had the opportunity to do an earthquake simulator at shindo 7 before, and it's firmly within "you can't stay standing, maybe even if you're holding onto something" territory. It's scary poo poo.

My earthquake warning app shows that it was felt at some shindo level across basically the entire country .

Shindo 1 is barely noticeable even if you're paying attention. Shindo 2 is probably noticeable if you're inside and not preoccupied. Shindo 3 is pretty noticeable in most situations, and things start getting scary at 4 and above.

That's basically right, but the areas marked as 1 felt the quake only very weakly.

Several of the aftershocks registered as shindo 1 where I live, and even though I was watching a seismic wave map as they passed through my location, I had to concentrate and watch some clothes hanging up to dry inside in order to really tell.

Guaranteed. A lot of Japan's infrastructure was specifically constructed with high intensity earthquakes in mind. A lot of the designs in the US are retrofits. Its one of the many reasons why they tore down the Alaskan Way Viaduct in Seattle, as the cost of rehabilitating and seismically retrofitting the structure would have cost $Texas.

California (for obvious reasons) has the most stringent dynamic earthquake load safety factors and design requirements in the country.

e: Expanded slightly: Nationally, most building construction standards at the state and local levels defer to the https://codes.iccsafe.org/content/IBC2021P1 (IBC Construction Standards). In many localities and states there are more stringent requirements appended to the IBC by legislation. This is an order of magnitude different in California, which references the IBC in many areas but in some (specifically seismic design) are incredibly more stringent. You basically need an MS in Structural Engineering that focuses on Seismic Design to get a job as an entry level in CA.

For Transportation projects (IE: Bridges, specifically those with federal funding, which are most anything over 2-5 million), ultimate oversight is provided by FHWA which regulates the design standards to be used. This ultimately leads to more standardization nationally.

That's how earthquake early warning systems work. The shaking from an earthquake travels at something like 6km/s, which means there's enough time to push an automated warning to people who are close enough to experience dangerous shaking but far enough away that the earthquake doesn't strike immediately.

The warning app I use living in Japan looks like this when a large enough earthquake happens:

After an alarm, it automatically pulls up a screen with information about the earthquake. It draws some circles expanding away from the epicenter, representing where the earthquake waves (and shaking) have reached. It also displays approximately how long until the earthquake reaches you, and approximately how strong the earthquake is estimated to be at your location.

You can generally expect something like 5 to 30 seconds of warning before an earthquake reaches you. It's enough time to turn off your stove and get away from furniture that might fall on your head, but not enough time to get outside or reach some kind of shelter.

Much worse. Eastern North America is pretty solidly monolithic without many faults or cracks in the plate so it doesn't take that much energy shaking one place to shake everything. I felt the DC quake in south carolina.
