If you're employing CIWS against incoming, poo poo has gone sideways in a very bad way. The range of CIWS is such that if it misses, you're taking an ASM in the side in about a second's time. Gravely was very aware of the incoming and likely placed herself there intentionally, but at the same time, hearing a CIWS go BRRRT in anger would be an absolute pucker factor event.
