You don't need style when you've got strength!

We have several people out with covid and all the other stuff going around right now. Supposed to do a museum trip at the end of the month and getting a bit wary.

Got my latest booster Friday and it kicked my rear end, I slept most of the day Saturday.

I don't even know WTF I have, I just know everything hurts a whole lot, I can't think to save my life (might be missing some required equipment for that), and my glucose is doing a good impersonation of a roller coaster. Woke up at 35 mg/dL last night :stare: and asked my GF how she got into the hotel with me and who she was. (we were at home)

I'm 5 shots deep, and was about due for another, would have hunted it out this week. Pretty sure I got this off my niece, who I think bought it back from a New Years music festival. Oddly for a respitory thing, my lungs are fine, just a nose that wont stop running and the worst hot and cold flushes and muscle aches. Just woke up at 5am feeling actually kinda better, but that might be the last round of drugs still doing their job, we'll see.

Oh hi chat thread! Long time, no see, liking the new look. Happy New Year y'all!

I made the mistake of trying to go to Mt Hood Meadows on the first weekend with big snow, after a really slow start to the season with poo poo weather. Here is a quick recap:

- Got a Thule Motion XT Alpine roof box to put the skis in. Brilliant idea, right? Well, gently caress you Thule. The lock is so poorly sealed that it iced all the way through, so after a drive up the mountain we didn't even get to ski.
- As I was trying to unlock the roof box, a chucklefuck in an Expedition let his door SLAM into my door, leaving a crease and some scratches.
- Another smoothbrain thought the "CHAINS OR TRACTION TIRES REQUIRED" signs were just for show, and slid his Explorer into the back of me, very much loving my bumper up and leaving me pretty sore today

Why did I, someone who can be fanatically obsessive about keeping nice cars nice, order a brand new expensive vehicle in a special color to use as a daily driver? That is probably the biggest fuckup. If I'd bought a boring color straight off the lot it would serve exactly the same purpose and I'd probably be way less upset than I am now.

2024 so far: I am angry at other people because I made dumb decisions and should have known better.

Feel better goons!

I went to a holiday Xmas gathering and 10/12 people there ended up with Covid. Got sick shortly after but my Covid test was negative. It was pretty miserable non stop running nose, congested, hot cold flashes especially at night, took about a week. At like 95% today, should get the last 5 tomorrow.

If that happens in the future, based on what I’ve read plus clinical trials, going to the doc to get a better test and confirmation means you get a script for paxlovid which makes recovery much better and reduces the chance of long covid by a lot

tl;dr
a three way combo at-home test isn't approved by the FDA yet. You can get a two-way at-home test by mail order, or you can do a three+ way test that gets sent to a lab, and hospitals have 3+way tests available for in lab use. FDA approval can take a long time unless it's intentionally expedited and there doesn't seem to be any strong push for that so we have no idea when we'll get 3+ way tests at home.

My mother has this snowblower - https://www.troybilt.com/en_US/two-stage-snow-blowers/storm-3090-snow-blower/31AH5DP5B66.html It's about 13 years old at this point, but has been well maintained generally & stored properly.

Because it didn't snow much last year, it got barely used so there's presumably 2ish year old gas in it from 2022, but she'd put Sta-Bil in it at the end of last year. This year she didn't think to try starting it before it actually snowed, and they've just gotten 12+ inches of fluffy snow and naturally it won't start. She's trying the electric start rather than the pull cord since she's 76, and it sounds like it almost catches but just won't keep turning over. She's primed it with the little bulb

Any suggestions on additives she could dump into it or if getting some younger person to come pull the cord might do a better job of getting it started than the electric starter? Otherwise it's probably going to have to go to the snowblower maintenance shop which is presumably going to be extremely busy now that the storm has arrived.

Could always try some starter fluid at the carb. Best suggestion is to call a neighbor to see if they can give the pull start a few good ones

Yeah, first thing I would try is some sort of flammable aerosol. Starting fluid, brake cleaner, etc

The Royal Nonesuch
Nov 1, 2005

I bet if you can get one of the aforementioned younger people to tip it over and drain out the old fuel/refill with new, yank the cord and it will probably start up after a few pulls. I deal with the same issues at my mom's house and Sta-Bil only goes so far. Starting fluid might get it running but it will keep dying/run like poo poo.

Those Troy bilt carbs get gummed up super easily, last winter I had to sit in the garage and take mine apart and dip it in decarb because I didn’t prep it properly and it was a massive pain in the rear end

Hopefully the additive helped in that front, but I wouldn’t hold out a heap of hope. The jets are terrible.

Cool, if she can't get it going tomorrow I'll suggest these options before she calls the service shop, she's got a 45ish year old guy down the street who helps with trees that need to come down/get hauled out who can come tip it over for her/pull the cord/spray some carb cleaner in.

Thanks dudes.

I've had really good luck getting small engines to run well enough to operate/burn through the bad gas with a little starting fluid.

Last weekend I was fighting with my mom's 20 year old Honda engined Chicago Electric generator, since there's a chance of a nasty storm this weekend, drained the bad gas and filled 'er up with Tru fuel, hopefully I won't have to touch that PoS for a few more years.

I need to put in a NG powered backup generator at her place soon, or just buy her an EFI touch start gen set.
