Most of those weren’t even made by troma, they just bought the distribution rights to a lot of those titles.

I was listening to a paleontology podcast reviewing the Jurassic Park series from a science viewpoint (and not the Cinema Sins thing) and also watched the new Three Body Problem and I was thinking: What films (or tv I guess) have good depictions of scientists? In the first Jurassic Park, you get two scientists that are specialised, don't know everything about everything and they're actively learning and curious the whole time through. So that's decent, though it has lots of issues with it (especially with Malcolm's character).

Yeah, I thought the tricks they were using to make it not look like just regular 3d models with scribbles added seemed a little less effective. I also didn't love that it didn't have a great resolution, but maybe that soured me on everything else. I thought mutant mayhem was the better overall movie using that style.

As a biologist I literally don't think I've ever seen a good depiction of my field in cinema. Gattaca and Contagion are kinda ok, and I guess Awakenings is decent for general medical. For physics, I think Contact is pretty good, even the speculative ending stuff kinda extrapolates from existing physics in an interesting way. Interstellar too. It's The Common Descent podcast. You can look for "silver screen" and see the episodes they do about films from time to time. Hard disagree on Oppenheimer. It definitely shows scientists but they don't talk or act like any scientists I've ever talked to. Likewise Arrival, though my memory of it is more foggy. As for Primer I remember the sci-fi of it being good but I honestly have zero memories of the characters so maybe it's time for a rewatch. Awakenings sounds interesting, and I like Oliver Sacks so I'll try that.

How can you say this when Osmosis Jones exists Baron von Eevl posted:Did you think it was better than the first one? I thought it was a big step down visually and in terms of storytelling. Yes. And significantly so. Peter B and Gwen were the only interesting or useful spider people in the first one, cutting down the main cast to focus on mostly Gwen and Miles helps it out a ton. Miles in ATS has the best Spiderman being poo poo on arc since Raimi's 2 because nobody is even really angry at him they're all just disappointed that this bright kid seems to be throwing his life away for reasons they can't understand meanwhile he's barely coping with being Spiderman full time without his support network only to realize they've also betrayed him. I was playing the Miles Morales game for PC a while back and the only thing I could think while playing most of the time is how much worse the story was and how lesser Miles was when they didn't have the chops to back up his unique flavor of spiderman-ness. All the Father Daughter/Son and Mother Son poo poo hits perfectly in that film too, his mom's barely even a character in the first one and the Uncle Dad thing going on with the first just isn't as interesting as seeing Miles and his dad try and work poo poo out while the mask is still on.

Heading out to Manchester (Manchester, England not Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts) for a couple of days in early May. Plan to check out both John Ryland's library and Chatham's Library because I'm a massive nerd. Any of you goons familiar with the general territory and got any pointers for other things to see?

The Central Library, which has a grand domed reading room. The arts centre HOME MCR which shows a good selection of art house and limited release films. Affleck's for its eclectic range of shopping opportunities. The Northern Quarter for its bars, cafes, and record stores, if that's your thing. Oh, and if you want a cheap, unfussy curry, check out This and That.
