Silly question, probably the wrong place for it, feel free to kick me out if needed, etc ... ... but name me an actor in a given role whose character moves from goofy to menacing, naturally. I'm not talking "the psychopath who occasionally tells a joke" like Michael Mando in Far Cry or Ledger's Joker, but someone normally gregarious, who occasionally lets the mask slip. I don't know why I'm asking, just that i honestly can't think of any and I'm sure as soon as someone posts an answer I'm going to feel dumb as poo poo for not remembering them

I just remembered how whole thing started: I was talking with my brother in law, and he mentioned someone he worked with who was "like Joe Pesci from Casino was walking around wearing the skin of 'Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark' to try and fool everyone." Like, push them the wrong way and you'll have a ballpoint pen through your neck ... ... then neither of us could actually think of a movie character who fit that description

There's no actual indication that the genetically engineered people are significantly or reliably superior to the naturally conceived, even without the whole bit with playing swimming chicken in the ocean. Like, the woman at the space agency is genuinely shocked that the protagonist is even still alive at his age despite being perfectly healthy and having zero signs of heart problems. It's very interesting from a disability rights angle, as it seems like a world where birth defects, and likely conditions like autism and ADHD, have been entirely eradicated in most of the population, hasn't actually solved many meaningful problems, and if anything the athlete willing to give up his life to let a free-born have a shot seems bitter about how the society has zero regard for the disabled since there's no one disabled from birth anymore, once your body has problems society has no room for you even moreso than real life.

Doesn't the doctor at the end who lets him onto the ship even say something like "my son isn't everything they promised he would be"? The movie really seems to be trying to drive home the point that the perfection of the genetically engineered has been way oversold, whereas the inferiority of the natural born is also egregiously overstated.

At that point Hawke has been running for a million hours. There might be something to the genetic engineering where all the other applicants are really at peak performance without breaking a sweat... or everybody is full of poo poo and constantly collapsing behind the scenes, and it's just that Hawke's methods of concealment are a little cruder than everybody else's.

There overall does seem to be a theme that the genetic perfection of humanity is pretty anticlimactic. Speaking of good jokes I made that no one responded to, in the Gundam thread people were talking about Gundam Seed and the practical differences between Naturals and Coordinators, how Coordinators had an easier time at anything they turned their hand to but still needed to work hard and practice to get really good at something and there was still space for Naturals to be better than them like Mu La Flaga being a Natural and still one of the best pilots in the setting, and I sad that a Natural could beat a Coordinator as long as they never saved anything for the swim back. And it got nothing! Not even a single lol. That was crushing. (USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)
