Based upon the popular film Mortal Kombat, 'Mortal Kombat: A Novel' is beginning to be recognised as a classic.

Generally the book is very faithful to the film, and what it lacks in the movie's luscious visual textures it makes up for with Martin Delrio's lyricism. In one episode of the book, Sub Zero is looking at Scorpion whose leg he has just frozen "in a legwarmer of diamond butterflies", while Scorpion "evacuates from the pigpen dungeon of his dirty guts a powerful authoritarian bellow." Another scene Johnny Cage uppercuts Reptile and the action momentarily suspends in this delicate lull; a wind "enchanted with a fine herbed pungency from whisking through a sage patch" passes by Johnny Cage, and Reptile is "reeking and barfing green poisonous syrup." Such potency.

This book is timeless... immortal kombat.

Musing on two quasi-related films:

The Guardian is reporting that kids are doing the dance and music from the Saltburn ending for TikTok, in their own US mansions, UK great houses, and French palaces. Not in the nude because it's a Chinese social network but it seems that people watched that scene and only thought 'I have a nicer home'. (True, plenty could be filming somewhere they don't really live, like rich uncle Sir Hebry's hall in the Cotswalds or a wing in a palace normally booked for Weddings they rented for one hour only.)

Genuinely in line with Emerald Fennel.

Michael Shannon wasn't particularly weird in Pottersville, but it's an extremely weird movie for him. It's the straight to VOD Christmas movie where he's a shopkeeper in a small town that's drying up and then he discovers his wife (Christina Hendricks) is having an affair with the local sheriff (Ron Pearlman), so he goes on a drunken rampage in a gillie suit that is mistaken for a Bigfoot sighting and brings in mad tourist bucks. There's also Ian McShane, Tom Lennon, Judy Greer, and a subplot about furries.

It ends up being kind of a dull movie, which is maybe the most insane thing about it.

edit also produced by Patty Hearst???

Sometimes jobs have annoying parts about them, having to do an interview is probably less annoying than things I've had to do for work. I feel like Dakota Johnson isn't a big enough draw or deserving of enough critical praise to get away with doing poo poo like that for a while without it seriously impacting her ability to get decent gigs. Like I think it's funny how she very much doesn't give a poo poo but it doesn't make me want to see her movies or anything.

I did like her in Suspiria 2018 but it wasn't exactly a deep role, Goth was more of a standout, even Chloe Grace Moretz was more interesting in the way she was swinging for the fences.

If you're doing adjusted domestic gross Saldana's top 3 movies are pretty much neck and neck with double Titanic's adjusted domestic gross, but Avatar made absolutely bonkers money overseas so that's going to weigh it a bit if you had a way to adjust global box office for inflation. Saldana starred in the three highest international grossing movies of all time.

Yeah, the length is kind of unwarranted. I think you could make a really tight 90 minute movie out of it from the script stage, but as it is I thought we were gearing up for the final act and I checked and there was a loving hour left.
