1981 comics is an assortment of comics I pull from scans of the St Petersberg(Florida) Evening Independent. There's nothing notable about the paper itself except that it doesn't do Sundays, which is mostly only a problem for Spiderman. Every once in a while I'll post other stuff that catches my eye from it, but this is the Reagan era so a lot of the paper is just kind of depressing.

Computoon: Origins is specifically Computoon ages back, to see if it's ever made sense. (it has not) Currently we're in 2005.

New to my rotation this year, Mexikid Stories! Written and drawn by Pedro Martin, it's a memoir of his childhood in the 70s and 80s. I'm posting it because it gives me lowkey Marlys vibes. (Hosted on Gocomics, so it counts for the thread) It's been going since 2019 but with an erratic schedule.

It's the result of readers looking at the strip entirely incorrectly. If you try to read C&H as a realistic strip like foob, well you're cracked and shouldn't read things. If you try to read C&H as a "sitcom" like Big Nate or "sitcom, with occasional fantastic elements" like Zits, you're still looking at it wrong. Calvin doesn't need medication or therapy because he's not an actual 6 year old. His parents aren't negligent because they aren't parents. Really this about sums up my thoughts on it. Some parts of C&H didn't age well but a lot of this stuff is people either regular old overanalyzing or going out of their way to try to find something edgy in the strip.

Even the one where he got on his mom's case about the text vs phone stuff read more as "parents just dont get it!!" and the end of the entire week of strips was presenting Jeremy like how the Mom is presented when Jeremy doesn't get it.

Sometimes the "teens, am i right?!" jokes that fall flat read like the author heard a thing or had a thing happen to him and went "oh that'd make a good strip". Like he had his kid tell him about text etiquette and didn't get it, but it's the thing the teens do; "out of touch parents, am i right?!"

I've been reading it since I was a teen myself(it's always been pretty good spirited and willing to make jokes both ways), and I mostly get the sense that it's a case of it being harder to write a strip about teens as you get further away from even being the parent of a teen, since there's nothing really keeping you in touch with what The Kids These Days are actually like. Even the more off-base modern strips feel more confused than mean spirited to me.

Then again I enjoy timing myself with how fast I can get in and out of Costco. I need X, Y, Z, and some Q. I know usually where they are. Costco is not a 2-3 hour trip of exploring every aisle.

I'll do that stuff sometimes(especially in Costco where stuff actually gets rotated in and out at a decent rate) but I wouldn't dream of doing it while dragging someone else along with me. Going to the store isn't a social event and if someone's with me I'm trying to get in and out as fast as possible.

That said Jeremy seems ok with it, which is the important part here.

It's almost certainly just going to be a "kid has crush on adult who was nice to them, maybe some hijinks ensue but it's all from the kid's end, it's all harmless" story.
