https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chernobyl_disaster I read this years before it was ever a miniseries, maybe like 12 years ago, and it was the first time I really appreciated Wikipedia. The job I had at the time, if I ever got bored, I'd shoot a message to a coworker just saying, "give me something to Google". I'd look up whatever they said and learn about it. Reading this article it mentioned that the workers immediately took potassium iodine tablets when the alarms went off. I then wondered why. As Wikipedia does, potassium iodine was linked to another article, which then lead to thyroid, and down the link rabbit hole I went. I really hadn't utilized Wikipedia much before that, but it gave me a huge appreciation with how easy it was to keep reading interesting poo poo.

Someone put in the Wikipedia entry for the movie that after the movie came out, gang violence dropped sharply in America, as many rival gang members wondered if they too were long lost brothers.

For personal reasons, mine is this article about the Australian folkloric/mythical creature the Drop Bear: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drop_bear During a discussion in the PYF cryptids thread I noticed that the wikipedia article stated that the earliest written mention of a drop bear was from 1982, which had then been reported as a fact in several badly researched online articles about drop bears. I was pretty sure that wasn't true at all so I hit the books and researched several original sources from the 1960s and 1970s which mentioned drop bears and some kind wiki editor goon updated the article for me. (I didn't have permissions to edit the article, it was locked due to vandalism) Now all those lazy online articles about drop bears are wrong. Edit: me IRL Snowglobe of Doom fucked around with this message at 08:36 on Jan 10, 2024 |

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giacomo_Casanova This guy's life was wild. A small excerpt: quote:Casanova had dug up a freshly buried corpse to play a practical joke on an enemy and exact revenge, but the victim went into a paralysis, never to recover.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castrato They have a music clip of an elderly castrato who was still alive in the early years of audio recording. Honestly it’s just fascinating how it started and why it went on for so long, so are the biographies of the most famous singers. Turns out you don’t need balls to bang your way through high society, cos a lot of women wanted a man who couldn’t get them pregnant.
