My area is having a cold snap and I was checking on power outages, and the local utility companies still like to post things on Facebook, so I logged in for the first time in like a year. When did like every third thing in the feed become AI-generated thirst-trap bullshit? From what I can gather there must be a large population of guys who fetishize flight attendants, girls in military uniforms, and volleyball players. And who are also unaware that hands are supposed to have five fingers, or that military uniforms don't generally include cleavage. Lots of uncanny valley poo poo, as well as a lot of images where the "girls" look awfully drat young. Just incredibly creepy poo poo. I also saw a couple different suggested pages putting forward absurd conspiracy theory bullshit, like literally claiming to have found working stargates in Egypt, but that seems tame by comparison. I mean, Facebook has been utter garbage for years, but somehow they have found a way to be even worse. When did this horny AI poo poo start flooding in?

Facebook gives you what it thinks you want. You're probably in the demographic for creepy military themed porn so that's the first thing it shows you. Personally I've curated my Facebook so it's mostly cute animals and extremely stupid memes. It's good for a laugh now and then. Shame a lot of people put hosed up stuff on it though. Could say the same about the forums I guess.

FB returns ads they think you'll be interested in based on your browsing histories OP. I don't get any of that garbage in my feed...

I have everything so walled off they know next to nothing about me. Facebook runs in a Firefox container, I run scriptblocking everywhere, and have never allowed Facebook on any of my phones. I also have a second Facebook account for reasons, and when I checked it is largely the same except more panty shots and NFL cheerleaders labeled as "show girls" for some reason. Since Facebook has like no information on me aside from basic demographics, I can only assume that being an adult identified as male is enough to open the floodgates to sketchy AI cheesecake.

Here's a couple examples of the weird fetishy stuff that I don't feel the need to spoiler, at least. No, on second thought I'm going to spoiler the flight attendant one that's first: The visible replies to these appear to be from guys who do not realize this is all AI crap. And who are very, very thirsty.

I don't think I've posted anything to my own feed in years, and I think I engaged in one, maybe two Messenger conversations in 2023. And I sent my cousin a happy birthday, and posted once or twice to private groups. So I've barely interacted with Facebook at all for quite a while.

CaptainSarcastic posted:Maybe it is indeed because I've starved their data collection. If you're logged into an account and clicking on ads for things, it doesn't really matter much if you're running blocking scripts or even blocking cookies. Facebook is still able to log your activity on their servers. Which will think it's what you're into and keep showing you more and more of the same ads. Obviously though I guess, these ads shouldn't be on the platform, but it's all incredibly automated with very little human oversight and the spam advertisers know how to work the system.

Dick Fontaine posted:oh, but they’ve been tracking you all over the place with the pixel Yeah, it's that kind of creepiness that led to running the amount of privacy/security stuff that I do. I know it's not 100%, but I limit how much of my information goes out as best I can. Even SA lives in its own container in Firefox. And my phones all have the DuckDuckGo tracker blocker running, and it is frightening how many things that clamps down on. I forget how bad things are if you aren't running uBlock Origin. I guess the suggested follows are ads, but that's Facebook's internal algorithm being dumb, I think. And I have spent so little time on Facebook for years now they really have next to no 1st party info to work with. Agreed this stuff shouldn't be on there, but Facebook has give zero fucks for a long time. I remember reporting anti-vaxxer stuff after they claimed they were going to clamp down on it, and they rarely did anything about that. At this point I so rarely go on Facebook it's all rather moot, and it was just so weird to see this flood of AI softcore spam that I figured I'd post about it. Facebook's data warehouse stores 300 petabytes of analytical data tracking users and even people that don't have accounts.
