There are chunks of stainless steel shaped like bars of soap that you can buy right now on the internet or at stores and people use them to "wash" their hands And there's endless posts on the internet about how this magically or scientifically works, even though it absolutely does not, and there are endless and bitter bitter bitter words that have been exchanged between strangers on this subject What the hell is wrong with people??

They're for removing stink chemicals from fish and garlic, OP. They aren't intended to actually clean anything like soap does.

BAGS FLY AT NOON posted:It does work for garlic smell. yeah imo it works, you can just do it with a ss butter knife under running water i only said it is dubious because official research says so, I know for a fact that it works decently well i guess the possible mechanism is the chromium oxide layer adsorbing sulfuric compounds and then being slaked away

It doesn’t clean your hands, it just neutralizes the smell. You can get the same effect by running your hands along the basin of the sink itself assuming it’s also made of stainless steel.

Deep Glove Bruno posted:i thought that was just for neutralizing raw garlic smell from your hands This. I used to use one and it worked better than just soap, but still left *some* garlic/onion smell. You still use soap, but you then run the metal bar over your hands with the soap, then again after rinsing. It's supposed to work using ions. I then just switched to a product called "Kitchen by Upper Canada" because it was a lot easier, but it isn't made any more, so now I just use Softsoap "Kitchen Fresh Hands".
