I'm not sure where people are getting the idea that the cleaning crew knew anything about the pollution-mine connection. One of them just found the evil lair and the drill tip, and then another snuck a look at the casefile and decided that they'd all murdered Annie and were uninterested in motive.

Yeah, they didn't seem to have any idea about the pollution. Just followed a hunch on the star tool and pieced it together. Probably, correctly figured that you couldn't exactly keep a murder a secret in a little place like that so they figured they were all in on it.

And as they said, if they were wrong then they figured god/nature would sort them out in the end and it was as close as they could get to any kind of justice .

Really needed to set the lab guys up as crazier though. There were the little hints and bits like the crazy notebook but it was too much of a footnote, especially after the opening scene made them just seem fun and normal. Probably just ghosts from old scripts or edits. In general could have skipped a lot of stuff and built up other stuff.

The one glimpse we get of their notebooks and whiteboards shows a bunch of crazy rambling poo poo from people who needed to get out more. They didn't feel bad about what they were doing and they weren't showing their research to anyone so I didn't think it'd be that weird that he'd write "Once Evil Chemical X hits level Y we can become gods and never sleep!"

Also if I was searching a weird hidden room and saw a weird star drill I'd probably think of the big murder with the weird star weapon and go "huh." I also probably just wouldn't go down which is why I won't get a TV show.

Messy as poo poo, but above average for a crime procedural if you're counting network ones. More of a slam on them, but eh.

I went back to the neat list of shows on page 38 and will second that Deadloch hit a lot of similar themes in a much better way while also being a pretty funny (very) dark comedy. Solid mystery. If the one detective annoys you too much, it doesn't go on like that forever. Also some funny jokes specifically for people who watch a lot of small-town murder series.

Can't believe Danvers didn't notice that the science boys had carved E=mc^2 into Annie K's thigh.

The Fenris Buhler's Day Off DVD wasn't just someone putting in the same messed up disc and annoying everyone until they had to walk all the way to the entertainment room and open the cabinet to turn it off.

This was deep allegory because these guys finally got their day off from fighting over the porn share drive and having sick LAN tournaments at 10PM every drat night.

DVDs are flat circles after all so that's where the time loop would start.

yeah the main obstacle the TD brand faces is that everybody has a different idea on what made s1 good. it might be a handful of tropes, or only the chemistry of the duo leads, or maybe how it was always teetering at the edge of cosmic horror but never falling into genre. I, personally, think it was crab man! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zg5yDzzOEps OR the bridge they travel on first. that bridge is just excellent.

Hell, not sure if it's a hot take post but I got a little weird deja vu from some of the complaints this season. I remember the Season 1 thread being a lot more mixed on the finale at the time with a lot of the same issues, even if a majority came out liking it in the end. People who wanted more explicit or fleshed-out cult stuff were pissed. People who liked the King in Yellow stuff were double pissed that it ended up mostly being set dressing. People were upset about creepy kid pictures, lego sets [insert creepy clue that caught their eye] that didn't get delivered on like they wanted. People who wanted the cult taken down in a more optimistic ending. People who wanted a more depressing ending and thought "the light is winning" speech quietly mumbled out in a dark parking lot was a horrible ending.. Season 1 was cool. Never watched 2 or 3. Probably should at least watch 3, I just haven't because the timing hasn't worked out. Season 4 seemed okay, not nearly as bad as some of the detective series I've watched even if it missed a lot of marks. Probably not going to be very memorable. I think I liked "Hold the Dark" better for creepy Alaska poo poo, which isn't a great endorsement.

Something about a genre show getting a reputation for punching above its weight drawing a lot of people in who want different things from it.

It's funny because to me it felt like the opposite. They had all this other stuff they wanted to do but didn't thread it together well, so we wind up spending a few episodes just kind of loving around with meh personal stories until they realize that they need to get back to the mystery.

So why did Fiona Shaw know how to dismember people to make them disappear?

It was strange to explicitly go, "lol, no I have a boring backstory" and then do that. Also was she part of the vigilante mob? I watched closely at the time and I didn't see her, but it would fit well if she was. I assumed she was because why else would you have her conspicuously cleaning a hunting rifle in the same episode...
