it could be described as a BP but it's a bit more free form than the traditional thing. I think as you earn unlock points or whatever they call them in this game, you pick and choose your rewards. As you unlock more, the next tier becomes available for you to unlock. There is a premium system too but I think it's detached from the free one, and it's basically how they're doing DLC now.

Unlike a traditional BP, I don't see any time limit, I think it's just their DLC pack and you have to unlock things as you earn research points.

They said in a steam article battle passes hang around forever. The free one has many more tiers and much more stuff than the paid one, and I think all the future ones will be paid? I've got access to both but I'll be buying stuff from the free one for now. A few games last night got me a whole new inventory and 200 cash shop money, plus 30 more from exploring

The game feels just like the previous one. I had some doubts but it's great. Me and my team are running around with no idea what to do and dying a lot

Hot tip, if you're doing an objective involving radars, "NORTH" does not mean the direction on your compass. My team just spent ages standing around wondering what we were doing wrong. I think NORTH refers to the facing of the radar building

If your team mates pay attention to chat, maybe try CLOCKWISE or COUNTERCLOCKWISE

I've had better luck finding spots on the planet that show a game in progress, and joining those, than using quickplay. Joining some of these games still doesn't work but I can look around for one that does. I'm wondering if quickplay attempts to join the same game over and over?

It specifically says the grenade launcher is anti-armor, is that not true? I saw someone playing with one and an ammo pack. They killed themselves a lot but they also killed chargers fast. In my experience though I've unloaded whole clips onto chargers and haven't killed them. Maybe you gotta aim for the weak point anyway? That wouldn't be anti-armor though.

e: Ah it says armored "infantry." Does that mean it's good against bots? I haven't played against them yet.

It kills sub-heavy robots faster than just shooting them, and can also get those robots driving walkers from the front, though that may be slash damage hitting the pilot. It seems to bounce off the big bugs unless I got them in the back, but I think it's faster than using a gun

I like orbital strikes. I'm using the airburst, the walking barrage and the laser. There's an upgrade to reduce the call-in time by a second, which is nice. The laser reliably kills a group or a couple of heavies. The walking barrage is unlikely to produce teamkills as it moves away from you. The airburst is fantastic but it's more likely to kill your friends due to its large area, so you oughta consider a suit of armour that increases your throw range

I used the smoke one once against robots and it seemed to work which is a nice surprise

Played one of those defence missions where you need to kill a number of robots before extracting. I took a recoilless rifle and someone loaded me - I aimed for dropships. We won fairly quickly, but these missions are always quick, and at the end I had a total of 5 kills. They'd all have been dropships, but does a dropship full of robots count as 1 or a lot for the sake of the mission?

What’s the best way to fight the robots? I’ve only ever tried one time (last mission) and it was a mess. I could t really figure out how to destroy their spawn buildings (the ones that open their doors). I take it I’m supposed to throw a grenade into the open door? An orbital strike didn’t do it. They are harder to see in comparison to the landscape, and skinny and easy to miss, that’s for drat sure.

There's a couple of glowing red vents above the spawn door!

I've only used it against robots. Mostly i feel less pressure when taking a moment to aim at the head of some elite baddy or a group of regular robots. Of course with light armour on a couple of bullet hits is a stim use so maybe it's saving those. I've felt it's easier to run off alone somewhere to recover a sample or chuck a grenade in a box, but the highest difficulty I've played is the top orange triangle

It's probably not worth a strategem and backpack slot but also i think a sci fi soldier with a Roman shield and a pistol is cool

So some friends want to play this but I've been seeing poo poo about how pervasive the microtransactions are with weapons tied to the battlepass and stuff. So, how much can you actually do/unlock without having to fork over additional cash?

Nuebot posted:

Oh the armour in the shop are just skins? The way people were going on about it, it sounded like they were selling all the good stuff in the cash shop and everyone else had to make due with the base armour.

You can get big chunks of premium currency from the free or premium battlepasses, or little bits rarely as drops in missions. Nearly all of the premium currency I've earned has been from the inital free battlepass, which I've spent in the cash store. The premium battlepass has less currency in it than the free one. You can see the problem - premium currency appears to be plentiful for now but it's going to dry up as I slow or stop getting more currency from the free battlepass, and each premium battlepass only "pays" a portion of what I used to unlock it. However, the free battlepass has a lot of stuff in it, there's no time restrictions, and there's plenty to keep you entertained without spending extra

The armour from the cash store does have different stats from the free armours. However it's not better or worse, for now, and you'll be able to get most of the effects you want from a free armour

e: all in all i'd be happy buying the game and not spending again. however i'm likely to open my wallet for future premium battlepasses

I've seen some streamers employ stealth runs in a team setting. Everyone spreads out and solos objectives and meet back to extract. They make Helldive difficulty look like a joke. Light stealth armor is necessary to sneak into bases and melee takedowns on bots to take out the jammer tower. The meta is stealth at least when fighting the bots.

I hope this doesn't turn into a thing, there was a period in the first game where some people had the idea stealth-only was optimal/required in the top difficulty and got mad when anything went wrong/funny

Had a session where I joined just as everyone died so of course threw a reinforce down as soon as I got there. It was a high difficulty but once you're used to the highest others seem relaxed. The host ordered me to run away because it was Known to be the optimal play. Sadly since I'd already thrown the beacon, I wasn't allowed offscreen - the only choice was to fight the robots. I was able to do that without a sweat but got booted for not being optimal. Sorry for saving your session, friends

Today I also had someone accidentally fall into deep water while holding the hard drive we needed for the main objective, highly recommend not letting that happen. You have to go all the way back and grab another one.

A team member died near the water and we could see the samples only half a metre down. A couple of us were trying to get close enough to grab the samples out without falling in ourselves. I figured maybe crouching would put me close enough so hit the ALT key to crouch

Alright I joined a Suicide Mission but it turns out the mission owner was just farming robot defence missions. Four mortar calldowns and goes AFK. It nets experience and medals quickly but it's boring as. There's two bugs here - defence missions being way too easy and four identical calldowns. Snore

I hope this kind of thing actually gets addressed. Warframe neglected to hit the boring farming for quick rewards and eventually became all farm all the time. Hopefully this lot can put having a good game above maintaining a skinner box

Last night I was with a group which was not very objective focused. We ended up near an SSD dropoff and another player was running around with the SSD killing robots. I tried to tell them in chat they could drop it off at the terminal but they weren't paying attention. When the others began to move away from the objective I decided to experiment, and as it turns out, punching another player makes them drop the SSD. I felt bad about basically mugging another player but at least we were able to get the objective

Soon after I noticed the same person was low on HP and figured I could make up for my earlier violence by gifting them a stim but I hit the wrong button and punched them again

I unlocked the white and red shotgun near the end of the battlepass, the breaker spray and pray. It's not as good as the breaker. Bigger magazine but less damage, doesn't shoot any faster, and the magazine size just isn't a problem for me when using the breaker so why go for the thing that takes twice as long to kill bugs

At one point while returning to my spaceship I saw it was named SES Liberty instead of Flame of Selfless Service. I guess it's the default name and there was a glitch, or maybe Liberty is the actual name painted on the outside, because who has time to repaint the ship every time a helldiver is defrosted?
