It's definitely funny but the album is like actually a 9.0

but I mean pitchfork always let the fans of a group get in the way of their enjoyment of the music, that's kind of their thing I guess

Yeah except then they started doing their "actually this album is a secret masterpiece" re-reviews and that's when I stopped reading the site.

I'm pretty sure they famously gave MBDTF a 10.

Also, that Andrew W.K. album probably deserved better, but after I was like "yeah, he likes parties alright!" I'm not sure if it warranted repeat headphones listens.

Also, the score for the Tool album should have been Pi to 15 places. A deservedly low score, but also funny.

They did this for so many reviews for what became genre 'classics' when labels started doing like 10 year re-issues...

Edit:: Now we are on like the 25 year reissues so i'm sure its much worse.

Also that album is good if you need songs that go PARTY PARTY PARTY PARTY PARTY PARTY PARTY PARTY that have good vibes, it's not like a loving all-time classic album that's gonna move you to your soul

it will make you party, it did exactly what it said it was going to do if you read the tracklist

edit: https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/3864-blessed-black-wings/
eh I'd probably go a point higher and also Pike's vocal chord was blown and Albini kinda mixed the record around that, Des said Steve is really good at mixing drums too, which is impressive since Big Black didn't have drums; but at least they just digged Albini by wondering why he produced the album.

Remission is a very different band than the one that made Leviathan or Blood Mountain, even

March of the Fire Ants and Crusher Destroyer kick rear end

Crack the Skye is a really cohesive, beautiful album with a really nice keyboard track

Blood Mountain is less cohesive but also has Sleeping Giant, Hunters of the Sky and Pendulous Skin

they're both 9-9.5 for sure

still lolling at the text of the review of Blessed Black Wings boiling down to, "I just can't fathom why Albini produced this record"

I agree with Des, Albini knew how the drums should sound on that album. Especially if the album is opening with a wild drum solo.

I used to listen to Crack the Skye and Om's Variations on a Theme to time out my break and the end of the shift at Sennheiser, Last Baron is such a good song.

Also I really like that part where they both start singing in Capillarian Crest. Birchmen is a great song, though, and Diviniations is so kick rear end, and lol the video.

https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/10696-pilgrimage/ 7.4 - Solid 8, Unitive Knowledge of the Godhead has one of my all-time favorite drum fill intros

The rumor I heard was that the person who gave the ratings was not the person who did the review.

That fit with the admittedly few that I read where the review text was positively glowing and the rating was like a 4.9 or 6.2.

True or not, believing it makes it easier for me to not give a poo poo about them finally giving up the ghost.

from that 5.2 review of Advaitic Songs:

Mike Powell posted:

The paradox about them is this: With two people, Om sounded expansive; with more, they sound comparatively weak. The music is unmistakably theirs, but the intensity of it feels lost in the arrangements. Listening to it, I worry that at any point I may be visited by southeast Asian violins. Diversity, it turns out, can be a diluting agent.
