 WHEEL FOR THE INDECISIVE https://wheelofnames.com/hem-wfu  winter is unquestionably for coen brothers movies, so lets watch a shitload of em. we're gonna take two weeks off our normal movie club rotation and slam through as many coen movies as you want to.  Blood Simple - 1984 "Blood Simple" begins deep in the heart of Texas, where a jealous saloon owner hires a cheap divorce detective to kill the saloon owner's younger wife and her bartender lover. But the detective gets a better idea: he follows the two lovers, and...  Raising Arizona - 1987 Fast-paced farce about an unlikely pair who go to extreme lengths to have a child. When an incompetent robber marries a policewoman, they discover that they are infertile. In order to appease his wife's longings for a child, the man steals one of a set of quintuplets, but mayhem ensues when the child's rich father sends a rabbit-shooting bounty hunter after the kidnapper.  Miller's Crossing - 1990 When the Italian Mafia threatens to kill a crooked bookie (John Turturro), Irish mob boss Leo O'Bannon (Albert Finney) refuses to allow it, chiefly because he's dating the bookie's sister, crafty gun moll Verna Bernbaum (Marcia Gay Harden). Leo's right-hand man, Tom Reagan (Gabriel Byrne), is also seeing Verna on the sly, and when he's found out is obliged to switch sides, going to work for the Italian mob amidst a dramatically escalating gang war over liquor distribution.  Barton Fink - 1991 Set in 1941, an intellectual New York playwright Barton Fink (John Turturro) accepts an offer to write movie scripts in L.A. He finds himself with writer's block when required to do a B-movie script. His neighbor tries to help, but he continues to struggle as a bizarre sequence of events distracts him.  The Hudsucker Proxy - 1994 Greedy executive Sidney J. Mussburger (Paul Newman) hopes to take control of the company he works for by purchasing a majority share -- but he must first devalue the stock. So he convinces the board to appoint know-nothing recent graduate Norville Barnes (Tim Robbins). But Mussburger's plot backfires when Barnes' latest invention succeeds, thereby increasing the company's value. Worse yet, undercover reporter Amy Archer (Jennifer Jason Leigh) has the scoop on Mussburger's shady dealings.  Fargo - 1996 "Fargo" is a reality-based crime drama set in Minnesota in 1987. Jerry Lundegaard (William H. Macy) is a car salesman in Minneapolis who has gotten himself into debt and is so desperate for money that he hires two thugs (Steve Buscemi), (Peter Stormare) to kidnap his own wife. Jerry will collect the ransom from her wealthy father (Harve Presnell), paying the thugs a small portion and keeping the rest to satisfy his debts. The scheme collapses when the thugs shoot a state trooper.  The Big Lebowski - 1998 Jeff `The Dude' Leboswki is mistaken for Jeffrey Lebowski, who is The Big Lebowski. Which explains why he's roughed up and has his precious rug peed on. In search of recompense, The Dude tracks down his namesake, who offers him a job. His wife has been kidnapped and he needs a reliable bagman. Aided and hindered by his pals Walter Sobchak, a Vietnam vet, and Donny, master of stupidity.  O Brother, Where Art Thou? - 2000 Ulysses Everett McGill (George Clooney) is having difficulty adjusting to his hard-labor sentence in Mississippi. He scams his way off the chain gang with simple Delmar (Tim Blake Nelson) and maladjusted Pete (John Turturro), then the trio sets out to pursue freedom and the promise of a fortune in buried treasure. With nothing to lose and still in shackles, their hasty run takes them on an incredible journey of awesome experiences and colorful characters.  The Man Who Wasn't There - 2001 A dark tale of infidelity and murder, crime and punishment. Set in a small northern California town of the late 40s, the film portrays Ed Crane (Billy Bob Thornton), a barber dissatisfied with his life. His wife Doris' (Frances McDormand) infidelity presents Ed with an opportunity for blackmail that he thinks will help him to change it. However, Ed's scheme unravels and lays bare even darker secrets...  Intolerable Cruelty - 2003 Miles Massey (George Clooney) is an exceptional divorce lawyer who specializes in saving cheating husbands from having to pay expensive settlements. Unchallenged, he wearies of his life -- until he meets the cunning Marylin Rexroth (Catherine Zeta-Jones). When Massey's representation of her husband in court denies her any divorce compensation, Marylin vows to get revenge, enlisting the help of an oil baron (Billy Bob Thornton), and the two vie for the advantage in a flirtatious duel of wits.  The Ladykillers - 2004 Professor G.H. Dorr (Tom Hanks), a courtly Southern gentleman, arrives at the home of devout, elderly Marva Munson (Irma P. Hall), hoping to rent her extra room and use her basement to rehearse with his classical music ensemble. His fellow musicians, however, are actually criminals, and together they plan to rob a casino. When Mrs. Munson learns of their plan, they decide she must be silenced. Certainly, murdering one little old lady cannot be too difficult.  No Country for Old Men - 2007 While out hunting, Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin) finds the grisly aftermath of a drug deal. Though he knows better, he cannot resist the cash left behind and takes it with him. The hunter becomes the hunted when a merciless killer named Chigurh (Javier Bardem) picks up his trail. Also looking for Moss is Sheriff Bell (Tommy Lee Jones), an aging lawman who reflects on a changing world and a dark secret of his own, as he tries to find and protect Moss.  Burn After Reading - 2008 When a disc containing memoirs of a former CIA analyst (John Malkovich) falls into the hands of Linda Litzke (Frances McDormand) and Chad Feldheimer (Brad Pitt), the two gym employees see a chance to make enough money for her to have life-changing cosmetic surgery. Predictably, events whirl out of control for the duo doofuses and those in their orbit.  A Serious Man - 2009 Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg) is a physics professor at a 1960s university, but his life is coming apart at the seams. His wife (Sari Lennick) is leaving him, his jobless brother (Richard Kind) has moved in, and someone is trying to sabotage his chances for tenure. Larry seeks advice from three different rabbis, but whether anyone can help him overcome his many afflictions remains to be seen.  True Grit - 2010 After an outlaw named Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin) murders her father, feisty 14-year-old farm girl Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld) hires Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges), a boozy, trigger-happy lawman, to help her find Chaney and avenge her father. The bickering duo are not alone in their quest, for a Texas Ranger named LaBoeuf (Matt Damon) is also tracking Chaney for reasons of his own. Together the unlikely trio ventures into hostile territory to dispense some Old West justice.  Inside Llewyn Davis - 2013 In 1961 New York City, folk singer Llewyn Davis (Oscar Isaac) is at a crossroads. Guitar in hand, he struggles against seemingly insurmountable obstacles to make a name for himself in the music world, but so far, success remains elusive. Relying on the kindness of both friends and strangers, Llewyn embarks on an odyssey that takes him from the streets of Greenwich Village to a Chicago club, where awaits a music mogul who could give him the big break that he desperately needs.  Hail, Caesar! - 2016 In the early 1950s, Eddie Mannix is busy at work trying to solve all the problems of the actors and filmmakers at Capitol Pictures. His latest assignments involve a disgruntled director, a singing cowboy, a beautiful swimmer and a handsome dancer. As if all this wasn't enough, Mannix faces his biggest challenge when Baird Whitlock gets kidnapped while in costume for the swords-and-sandals epic "Hail, Caesar!" If the studio doesn't pay $100,000, it's the end of the line for the movie star. Inside Llewyn Davis was a good film. Coen Bros knew early on that Oscar Isaac and Adam Driver in the same movie is a recipe for cinematic greatness.

also how sick is bob dylan coming out to sing basically a worse version of th same song at the end. here's a dude who in a year or two is gonna have everything that llewyn doesnt but on this one night llewyn outplayed him. only it wont matter in the end because llewyn's just tht kind of guy.

Burn After Reading overall i liked it but i can definitely see why it isn't considered among the Coen Bros' best. seems to me way too sleek and Hollywood-y than what i'd expect from them, if that makes sense, and i never felt all that drawn into it like i have with the rest of their movies. i think it might partly be because all the rest of the movies i've seen of theirs have felt a lot more isolated in terms of setting for the most part, and not in the hustle and bustle of a major city. that being said though, it was still pretty good! definitely got more and more intense all the way through the ending, a real perfect escalation of things spiraling out of control for everyone involved. all the acting was on point too, think it goes without saying Frances McDormand ftw but all the other leads were great too. George Clooney and John Malkovich being equally schizophrenic was great, and i always enjoy Brad Pitt when he plays a dimwitted dirtbag though i wish he didn't unexpectedly get headshot two-thirds of the way through inasmuch as that was the catalyst for the third act to kick off. a lot more drama than comedy, though still got some good laughs (the Tuchman Marsh bit in particular got me real good). not a bad one to start out with 7/10

The thing I love about Burn After Reading is that it feels like the whole movie is one long joke, the entire rest of the movie just being setup and the very last scene being the punchline. Which is not something I think anyone but the Coen Brothers could pull off.

I'm absolutely in! Turns out there are a bunch of Coen Bros flicks I haven't seen. Though, just in the last couple days, I've watched Miller's Crossing (immaculate neo-noir, easy 5/5 stars) and Blood Simple (a slow, surreal exploration of love, jealousy, and the corrupting power of money? I think? 4/5 stars), so I'm off to a good start. Probably going to watch A Serious Man next, then re-watch Raising Arizona since it's been literally years.
