Cojawfee posted:That could be true. Also, some of the less flattering characterization from BoB was from the people themselves mischaracterizing other people who weren't able to speak for themselves. For instance, Lt. Dike. He was portrayed as being an incompetent buffoon despite having performed several heroic acts that they didn't tell us about. The show has him breaking under pressure and being unable to command the attack on Foy when, in reality, he had a shoulder wound and was messed up from that. Plus you had people like Winters and Lipton who seemed to just not like him, so they didn't care if they got the facts right. They hosed up Blithe too

Eau de MacGowan posted:i hope there's some blowback on command because knowing that 2/3rds of the troops involved in the super-complicated never-been-done-before plan weren't going to be there and figuring 'gently caress it let's roll' anyway seems a little irresponsible HA!

I don’t know jack about the air war, what I really want now is the submarines. How about a show about Fluckey next? Das Boot tv series. Check it out

ColonelJohnMatrix posted:The absolute insanity of the surface battles around Guadalcanal will absolutely make it to the screen one day (I know that a smidge of the battle of Savo Island was seen in the Pacific, but still). Neptune's Inferno was a crazy read. Surface Warfare might be a tall task to convert to screen because of the distances involved.

Holy gently caress only one Bomber from a group of 17 made it to the target and back and with 4 mechanical failures on the way. Just, gently caress.

Like intellectually I've always known there were heavy casualities in our daylight bombing campaigns but jeez when that last bomber just had nothing but pieces of bomber falling all around them, that was powerful. They took off with 180 people and more than 120+ missing/dead. How the gently caress did a ton of generals not get loving sacked for that campaign?

Then imagine seeing the fighters there when you take off. And again when you go to land. And then you get bombed before take off and then again after landing.

I think they repatriated them without issues. There was an american Paratrooper that ended up joining up with the Red Army until the end of the war.

Linked earlier in the thread the 100th had a wild time in training with one exercise had them take off in Kansas and the whole group ended up scattered all over the western united states, except one plane that ended up in eastern Tenessee. Which coincedently was where the navigators wife lived. Give us stuff like that in the training episode

CubanMissile posted:I wondered that myself. Westgate wasn’t a real person so it’d be weird to have him portrayed as a cheater if he wasn’t, especially with the “This man was the greatest father and husband of all time.” bio at the end credits. His wife passed over a decade before his memoir was published. Maybe he had a fling and said something about it in an interview or something
