That could be true. Also, some of the less flattering characterization from BoB was from the people themselves mischaracterizing other people who weren't able to speak for themselves. For instance, Lt. Dike. He was portrayed as being an incompetent buffoon despite having performed several heroic acts that they didn't tell us about. The show has him breaking under pressure and being unable to command the attack on Foy when, in reality, he had a shoulder wound and was messed up from that. Plus you had people like Winters and Lipton who seemed to just not like him, so they didn't care if they got the facts right.

So I guess it's a double edged sword. If you build a show out of the after action reports, then you can get as realistic depiction of what happened as you can, but maybe you don't get the personality of what happened. And if you build a show off what the survivors say later, you can get a really charismatic depiction, but it can end up slandering real life people. So I can see Apple wanting to play it safe how it depicts people.

They hosed up Blithe too

The first episode of the show was laying it on pretty thick, and aside from Toothpick Chewer and Moustache I don’t know who anyone is, episode 3 sold me on it though. I don’t know jack about the air war, what I really want now is the submarines. How about a show about Fluckey next?

The absolute insanity of the surface battles around Guadalcanal will absolutely make it to the screen one day (I know that a smidge of the battle of Savo Island was seen in the Pacific, but still). Neptune's Inferno was a crazy read.

Surface Warfare might be a tall task to convert to screen because of the distances involved.

Just go with the battle off Samar and have USS Johnston lead a destroyer charge against the fricking Yamato.

I mean I dug the destroyer combat in Greyhound but I think it would be hard to show how balls to the wall crazy Evans was in that fight.

Like intellectually I've always known there were heavy casualities in our daylight bombing campaigns but jeez when that last bomber just had nothing but pieces of bomber falling all around them, that was powerful. They took off with 180 people and more than 120+ missing/dead.

How the gently caress did a ton of generals not get loving sacked for that campaign?

Imagine being some Me-109 or Flocke Wulf-190 pilot and thinking you're hot poo poo shooting down these B-17s with ease because you memorized their cones of fire, and then suddenly one day seeing these fighters escorting them.

Then imagine seeing the fighters there when you take off.

And again when you go to land.

And then you get bombed before take off and then again after landing.

I feel like the last episode is going to speedrun the entire end of the war. I am curious about how the Soviets would treat POWs from allied nations.

Also from the preview, I wonder is Rosie is shot down during the Battle of the Bulge.

I think they repatriated them without issues. There was an american Paratrooper that ended up joining up with the Red Army until the end of the war.

Linked earlier in the thread the 100th had a wild time in training with one exercise had them take off in Kansas and the whole group ended up scattered all over the western united states, except one plane that ended up in eastern Tenessee. Which coincedently was where the navigators wife lived.

Give us stuff like that in the training episode

If they need food right over there, just don't take it off the loving truck. Drive it over!

Rosie's milk run was set up with all the classic tells of a last-minute tragedy. They even had some rando show up for his very first ever ride in an airplane. Some rear end in a top hat thinks he's super clever for "subverting" that trope. gently caress him. Putting the one person from the ground crew that had lines on that flight would have meant something and tied some things together. So many wasted chances for good storytelling.

I wondered that myself. Westgate wasn’t a real person so it’d be weird to have him portrayed as a cheater if he wasn’t, especially with the “This man was the greatest father and husband of all time.” bio at the end credits.

His wife passed over a decade before his memoir was published. Maybe he had a fling and said something about it in an interview or something

What was in the leg bag? Let Joe Toye explain:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RCFW25L3U8Q

Tldr the airborne had an extra heavy load for the Normandy jump because they were expected to fight for an extended time without resupply. Lots of troopers lost these bags which is why so many didn't have rifles or equipment when they landed. The Market Garden and Varsity drops fared better after they corrected for this, which you can see in the 4th episode when the Normandy vets show the replacements how to jump ready to fight.
