I just binged 2-5, and I am confused on one thing, how did Crosby Survive when everyone else apparently died. He just kind of pops up and Bubbles is all "i thought you were dead!" and he's all "Nope!". Did he get fished out of the North Sea?

Also i really liked that they showed the guy leave babyface in the ball turret, and then juxtaposed that with Druig refusing to leave his copilot who was done for, trying for a landing and crashing. So instead of one dead guy, there's now two. Also in that storyline, I am curious what the infiltrator did to out himself.

From the preview, we saw what was obviously concentration camp stuff, which, unless you were a jewish American soldier, POWs were not sent to right away. Though the German POW system was really inconsistent. Some camps were akin to the ones the allies set up for their Axis POWs, prisons but not beaten, starved and tortured constantly, and others were only slightly better than what the soviets POWs got, which was in itself only slightly better than the concentration camps, because remember kids, Slavs were second only to Jews in the Untermenchen chart of the Nazis. I wonder if i has to do with if they were established in the early part of the war or in the later part. I don't think any of the cast has been revealed to be Jewish?

Ah, yea, I read a really great book in my undergrad about POWs with a ton of direct interviews with people who actually were POWs and one Jewish guy was sent to a concentration camp but ended up being sent to a regular camp. He never knew why because the Germans didn't tell him why.

I like that we're seeing the air to air rockets the Germans used, as bombers didn't tend to change course it was pretty easy to lead a target with them. I'm waiting to see a Komit or a Me-262 at some point. The opening shows the D-day landings so we know we'll be going that far at least. Or maybe the Ju-88 with the jazz music upgrade. Those wacky Nazis, always thinking of new ways to try to avoid losing the war like the losers they are destined to be.

At the time, people in charge were also still quite optimistic about the potential effect of strategic bombing, as it was still a fairly new development. Many genuinely believed that any month now the bombing would critically break Germany's ability and/or will to sustain their war effort. Weighed against the prospect of shortening the war by months or even years, the severe losses of the bomber force would have seemed entirely worth it.

It wasn't really until after the war that people figured out that a lot of the raids had less effect than hoped for, and that an industrialized nation is quite capable of absorbing that kind of damage while sustaining a war.

Its really funny that they knew that strategic bombing was ineffective, because it didn't effect the British that much. Breaking the enemies back didn't work when the Luftwaffe did it, why did they assume it was going to work with the RAF and US Army Are Corps did it? I asked that to a prof in university and he said it was because the British were so arrogant and so they thought that even though the battle of britain and further bombings didn't effect their moral or ability to continue the war, they assumed because the Hun was so weak willed in comparison to the mighty British, that it would work.

There is a shot in the opening showing Russian soldiers holding up one of the airmen, so I assume either thats from them liberating a POW camp or one of the aircraft ends up on the eastern front?

If I remember correctly, Midway did destroy the backbone of the IJN but it didn't completely knock them out. Yea, I know people get salty when WW2 productions act like America won the war on its own, but in a way, it kinda did, if you want to say its industrial might was the main force that won the war. The soviets got nearly to that point but you couldn't match the US, mostly due to their factories could operate without worrying about being bombed like nearly everyone else. Getting stuff to Europe was the issue, but even then by '44 it wasn't really that hard due to the advancements in sonar and the convoy system being perfected.

Yea, a Tiger was worth 10 Shermans, but there were going to be like 30 shermans for every Tiger so whos going to win that battle? Ditto with the luftwaffe aircraft, nearly impossible for the Germans to replace their losses as fast as the allies could shoot them down. The Destroy the Luftwaffe mission was insanely effective before DDay, so a lot of late war bombings were unopposed beyond ground based AA. Slaves in factories in old mines and caves wasn't going to be as effective as a proper factory.
