As I approach 56 I can’t help but feel a profound sadness that things are always in flux. Everything is changing. One day your neighbor won’t be there anymore. One day the corner market won’t be there. One day the person who provides you a service will be gone. One day a family member will be gone. Oblivion. Goons. Maybe with the advent of the internet and social media I see how absolutely insignificant we are in the solar system. We are but a blip of a fart in the billionth millionth quadrillionth stars in the solar system. There is no God and we will die and cease to exist for eternity. Nothing is static.

I just spoke with God and he assures me there's an afterlife and plenty of paperwork to spend it filling out.

you ever see an old piece of gum on the sidewalk? that gum has been there for years. someone spit that out, long ago, but for them, the memory has faded. they don't remember the gum. but now, you are looking at it. seeing it for the first time. imagine! all of the things that gum has seen, the people that have passed by it, all immersed in their own story, their own life, with their own gum they've spit out, somewhere else. they don't know you, and you don't know them, but you are all connected by the momentary glimpse of a piece of chewed up gum. we are all the gum on the sidewalk of our lives.

The world is constantly envolving, for better and for worse, I can imagine myself having a similar mentality once I reach your age, but for now, a changing world is good for most of us. Adapting to the changes all the time can be both time consuming and tiresome, but hey, at the very least, you still cannot imagine how you will die, so do everyone else here.

This is the great joy. I revel in it. Nothing endures forever. Not the bad, so they pass, not the good, in which you rebel. Make peace with it. Better, go with it fully. Dive into it. You are impermanent and it's your job to fight against the very notion every day, each day a terrible gift, each day a new sandbox of improbable possibilities. Actions beget events, and you will become of each and every one of yours. All other possibility is hoax. Other truths none. May we but have a chance to revel in our own deaths for the opportune inevitability, the Mustness of it, the immutability shaming you for your foolishness. Imagine in that moment being ashamed to die. When it will stink only of destiny. I don't know who sold you the God hoax or why you seemingly bought it. Where there is is spiritual sustenance enough already of a far more quotidian kind. Nothing is static unless the observer is frozen still

"Why should I live in history? gently caress, I don’t want to know anything anymore. This is a world where nothing is solved. You know, someone once told me time is a flat circle. Everything we’ve ever done, or will do, we’re gonna do over and over and over again. And that little boy and that little girl, they’re gonna be in that room again. And again. And again. Forever."

Which you are because people don't need to invent weird philosophies to sublimate feelings that don't bother them.

SonOfGhostDad posted:The desire for permanence is the source of all suffering. Those dudes in India around 500-250BC figured it out. The Four Noble Truths: (in layman's terms) Suffering exists Suffering has a cause Suffering has an end There is a path that leads to the end of suffering And at root it is our firm belief that things are permanent when in fact nothing is permanent. That is the root of our suffering.

I find it easier to focus on the context. Strip away everything (time, space, knowledge, "you") and the one absolute is existence/consciousness. Everything else is window-dressing. Or subscribe to our monkey brains having an inbuilt resistance to everything about death. Kinda like the inverse of the inbuilt wanting to gently caress everything. Make peace with sex and death, or don't; it's all good. Or look at the linear time route. Nothing ceases to exist, it just changes. You're getting to be 56, but not because you as a kid ceased to exist, it just changed, and we can't know what future changes will be with any certainty (that would spoil the surprises). We can dwell on thoughts and assumptions about future changes, or not; again, it's all good.

The time you took reading this is less time you have to exist. Don't read the next sentence I'll just be wasting more of both of our precious little time in existence. I told you not to do it. "Oh it's only a few seconds I wasted reading that nonsense you wrote, it's no big deal." Your whole existence is made up of moments like this. Oops, if you're still reading I just wasted more of both of our lives. Read the next one - I won't say anything important or interesting, I'll just waste more of your time. I put a space there that felt like the end of a paragraph was it? Don't worry, don't answer. It doesn't matter and I just wasted some more precious seconds or your short precious life. All of those moments you just spent on this pointless post are gone forever. In a few years you won't even remember or value you time you wasted reading this.
