watched hell or high water last night. a pretty good little gritty western. i like this type of film, so a bit biased maybe.

the dreamy chris pine’s character was very endearing, and i couldn’t help but want his masterplan to succeed. ben foster’s character was just the right amount of over the top big brother criminal. jeff bridges played the stereotypical old rear end racist texas ranger role well, even if it was really on the nose the majority of the time. almost all of the side characters helped carry the scenes well - excellent waitresses lmao...

a couple of pretty good jfc scenes out of nowhere with a touch of ultra violence/gore - that gas station scene was wild and unexpected? either way, not too much to make it weird, but instead, it was impactful and helped you realize that there are no good or bad guys in this film. sometimes i hate how these western crime movies end, but this one handled it well enough.

overall, good writing, cinematography, and score. pretty decent acting from the whole cast. i enjoyed this pick.

3.75/5 stars

Conan the Barbarian

godlike. incredible sets, incredible costumes, absolutely unbelievable soundtrack. so many fuckin kickass monologues. even lovely actor-type arnie is perfect. the action scenes are amazing, subotai fuckin rules (literally a california surfer they picked up, hes got like four movie credits lmfao), bringin in james earl jones and max von sydow to teach arnie, sandahl bergman, and subotai to act was th smartest thing they couldve done. every single scene with either of em is pure electricity, thulsa doom's big monologue is one of the best in movies and so is the scene with king osric. if i could nitpick anything i wouldnt bother because the movies perfect 100%. i could watch it ten times a week nd never get bored.

after my pick last year i started making a list of possible picks, but on getting drawn last week and looking them up they all had poo poo streaming options.

worst of all was Sleuth, an absolute classic, both lead actors nominated for Best Actor for the movie. and i see this, not even for rent anywhere, no newer home release than a dvd

I looked it up and apparently the film is now owned by Bristol Myers Squibb, the pharmaceutical company lol

Hell or High Water

a rotting world where everyone just kinda sucks.

its interesting that the cops we follow dont really accomplish anything, they take the waitresses money, they guess where the final hit will be but dont get there soon enough to do anything about it, one dies, and the other makes a shot in a standoff that never couldve ended any other way. they never figure out anything about the casinos

on the topic of some things feeling a little contrived or heavy handed, i thought the bank manager actively trying to scuttle the payout at the end and sweating over it was real silly. the evil hanging over this movie isnt a single mean bank manager lol

i quite liked the final shootout and the brutality of those shots, as others have pointed out

Conan the Barbarian

badass. I've never seen it before, excellent pick. James Earl Jones manages to be an all-timer villain sheerly through his hosed up piercing gaze. I was surprised at how goofy Conan the character is; I was expecting more stoicism but he's kind of a clown whenever he meets a new buddy. In the first half I was kind of eh on the fights, but as they get more over the top and gory it works for me.

Really awesome set design, costumes, music, lighting... in a lot of ways I appreciate it in the way I appreciate the original Star Wars, where corny moments work in its favor and add to the pulpy vibe.

I was thinking about how much the Sega game Golden Axe must have obviously been inspired by Conan, and then like a minute later I recognized a scream that was sampled directly in the game lol: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pZ6C69ZvW-w&t=21s (21 seconds and another one I didn't recognize at 1:12)

king of teh portal
kind of busy but ill write some things about conan but not all the things

i thought it was pretty funny plenty of levity in the film for how much death and destruction follows the barbarian and i especially liked the ending where james earl jones spells out for conan that his whole life is based on revenge and if he takes it he will be rudderless without him and conan looks like he thinks about it for a second and then straight up beheads him and throws his heads down the step lol i think he was preaching to the wrong choir here

also the cult of doom being a bunch of gay fairy pinko commie scum made me laugh a lot too the movie trashes hippies with glee

but yeah as for things i didnt like id actually say a majority of the acting, the usurper king was good and so was james earl jones despite being an ill fitting villain lead

i also didnt like how the hammer underling illustrates his strength with his weapon by knocking down a pillar then hits conan upside the head and conan shrugs it off

it shouldnt have built that up if the payoff was going to be so limpwristed

that said the deaths were otherwise pretty cool and well deserved

giving this a strong 7.5/10 not amazing or even all that great but it was very good

Conan the Barbarian: 4.5/5 timeless action flick. like i said earlier i always remember, like, the snake fight or the battle on the hills at the end but i forget the comedy like the wizard stabbing a guy and freaking out over it subotai clapping him on the back all "that's how we do it!" or conan luring the priest somewhere to steal his clothes and then thinking he's totally fooled these guys. james earl jones absolutely kicked rear end as thulsa doom. great pick.

Conan the Barbarian

What a loving movie lol. Basically perfect, everyone in it is great but extra credit to Max von Sydow as King Osric, god drat that's a good scene. The pacing and momentum in the whole movie is perfect and it's impossible to stop watching once you've started. Incredibly satisfying ending and I really haven't seen anything like it since.

wasnt expecting this movie to take itself so seriously, but it owns
the really pretty shots and the insanely epic soundtrack carry this bad boy
watching this reminded me of when i watched secret of nimh, cause this is just not the kind of soul your allowed to see in cinema anymore. its the kind of soul that was already dead even b4 capeshit started dominating.

Conan the Barbarian

eh?

i'm going to chalk a good chunk of my feelings on the movie to not being into fantasy much at all and also having never seen it until now, but man it just never really clicked for me. on a technical level it was ambitiously impressive with the set designs, all the extras, the practical effects, etc. but when it actually came to the movie it just felt...lacking i guess? not sure how best to put it into words but though the actual combat was a good level of clumsy camp, everything outside of it left me wanting more since most of the time it's just stringing along from setpiece for a fight to setpiece for a fight. i don't remember who said it during Speed Racer that it felt like a live-action cartoon, but i got that same vibe from Conan but in a lot grittier, more low-budget way and it wasn't one i found myself adoring on the level of Speed Racer. James Earl Jones was fantastic and every line out of his mouth was gold, and i appreciate beefcake Arnie doing Arnie things but everyone outside of them wasn't particularly memorable, even Max von Sydow since he has like five minutes of screen time. the ending hit really well at least and there were a fair few funny bits i laughed at but most of the time the movie fell into a weird chasm for me where it's almost taking itself too seriously so it can become pure camp, but falls short because of being so straightforward so it's stuck in a weird limbo. i don't mean to be a stick in the mud cuz it's clear there's a lot of love for this movie in the thread but it really just didn't do much for me

was waffling on my final rating a lot before i ultimately asked myself if i'd watch the movie over again rather than some select scenes and that gave me my answer

6.5/10
