lol. i was trying to do the 1001 movies to watch before you die list for awhile, i had this whole system, and i did have some hosed up dreams when i was watching like tarkovsky or the cabinet of dr caligari or w/e. i got stuck on that martin scorsese snoozer where daniel day lewis is in some kind of jane austen situation and after renting it three separate times and giving up every ten minutes or so i haven't gotten back to it, lmao.

this one's on the 1001 movies list, so i'll try to jump in on it. never seen and always meant to.

what are the rules for getting in on the roll for choosing a movie? i'll probably watch anything that's on the 1001 list, but it's one of my OCD Forever projects so i can't interrupt it.

it turns out Day of the Dead was not on the list but i only learned that more than halfway through watching it so i'm going to finish it.

truly enjoyable so far. going to sound sarcastic but i genuinely enjoy watching some of the actors break character and do a big loving smile at the hammier lines, lmao. there's something about it that reminds me of working in community theater, with a bunch of joyful people working out of their cars excited to show you all the clips of themselves playing extras in some new york or boston-based show. just a bunch of people hamming it up on a doctor who budget and enjoying the hell out it, lol.

yeah i was pretty sure it started today but maybe i'm confused, lol.

in terms of the 1001 list, it's up to 1245 at this point. i'm on track to watch them all before i die, even considering how slow i approach it and my limited timeline, so I'm going to stick to it to get the platinum :D

Day of the Dead

i love this movie. its cliche atp but "men are the real monsters" is a way cooler part of zombie media than "look at how sick it is to see people being gored to death" is, and this movie delivers insanely epicly on the former... and the latter as well, more than any other zombie movie that comes to mind
honestly, the acting never really struck as cheesy 2 me. the way the movie shows how apocalyptic and hopeless the situation is, all the screaming and anger seems genuine and believable enough 4 me. and bub is believably dumb in a kinda cool way. the only character id consider cheesy in how over the top they are is dr frankenstein. very "im in a movie" character. but hes cool too
writing is awesome, tension is great, the movie does a great job at being exciting w/ very little action in the first half then delivering on the gore at the climax
some things i hate ab this movie:
1) its just not very scarey tbh
2) the cheap nightmare scenes arent scarey and are cheap and annoying. the first one w/ the hands in the walls is fine but get rid of the others and show how the escape at the end actually went
3) the mcs boyfriend is so fkn annoying. he ends up being so much less likeable than any1 else in the movie including all the military fuckers. all he does in the movie is be a bitch, a pussy and a hindrance and then he tries getting every1 killed. i get that its ab showing how ppl react to the stress, hardship and cabin fever of the apocalypse, but its like they made him the guy where they dump all bad stress related poo poo they dont want to give to the other chars and theres nothing else to him. the military villains actions make a lot of sense even if they make him an evil piece of poo poo. the boyfriend is just a plot device
idk if i like this more or less than night, but i def like both more than dawn. all good movies tho
4/5

yeah dr. frankenstein was drawn from stock but he's just so enjoyable, lol. dr. oaken is my favorite character in independence day for the same reason.

steve martin is always good but i think the dianne wiest thread is actually my favorite in the movie. her bemused look while keanu talks about dads and her delivery on "Here's one for my wallet!" kills me.

i think what makes the movie stick with me is that it has the feel of an 80s comedy but ultimately is more of a family drama, mostly without feeling like it has awkward tone shifts. its biggest flaws are that rick moranis's character is too unhinged to be likeable and the stuff with tom hulce resolves just a little too depressingly. i do like "grandma's wonderful and affecting roller-coaster speech," and not just because steve martin's follow-up is funny.

Interstella 5555, the 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem
this was cool, nice pick. It's an hour long anime music video for Daft Punk, what's not to like? everyone making this understood what it is when they set out to do it. It has robust, colorful visuals to pair with the music and that's all that it needed, really. the "plot" is easy to follow and it culminates in a big battle between good and evil ghosts in space. it's only an hour long so that it doesn't overstay its welcome.

i get the complaints about recycling the animation in a lot of places but it didn't really bother me. i could make up something about the repetition contributes to its oneiric storytelling or w/e but the truth is that this movie is for getting stoned enough that you melt into the couch, grabbing some snacks and watching with headphones on. i honestly wish more bands would do something like this, something that cuts corners if it has to and just serves as a light companion piece to the music, something that doesn't have to be either traditional "music video" length or feature length. like, yeah, it could be an hour of WinAmp's visualization effects and it would still be cool to listen to Daft Punk, but this was for Discovery, which is fun.

Dirty Duck

When I was about 15 years old, I accidentally slammed my fingers in a car door in my parents' garage. My mom had already walked into the house before I even left the car, so nobody saw it happen. My entire hand was trapped in the car door, which was fully closed and locked, and three of my fingers were crushed under the frame. The pain was excruciating. I yelled of course, but because of the soundproofing in the walls, nobody heard me at first. Trying to pull my hand out was pointless and only hurt more, and I had no keys so I couldn't open the door. I started to realize that nobody was going to help me, at least not right away, and that I was probably going to be stuck there for a while. I stood there for what felt like forever, in overwhelming pain the entire time, shouting for help at intervals and probably sounding more and more desperate.

I remember wondering to myself at some point if maybe my nervous system would adapt to the pain after a few minutes, or if my hand might go numb or start to hurt less. But no, the entire time I was stuck, I was in constant agony, and at no point did it let up even a little. In fact as time went on and I got more and more frustrated, the pain intensified. By the time my mom finally heard my shouting and came to help, I felt like I was going to be trapped there forever. When I think back on this I realize that I don't really remember the initial injury or how much it hurt, I just remember how endless the experience felt. The pain was intense, but the exasperation of being confined somewhere with absolutely no way out was the thing that got to me, and that made the brief time I was stuck feel like hours. Dirty Duck (1974) has a runtime of 75 minutes.
