the show is as long past its prime as larrys balls are in his panties but I don’t think I can get tired of how much genuine amusement larry exudes while riffing with leon. I thought the maria sofia plotline was by far the worst part of last season and I’m not living for her prominent use in this first episode but whatever, the show’s almost over, might as well see it past the finish line

4:3 SD curb (s1-s6) is a much more consistently funny show than 16:9 HD curb (s7-s12) but there are a few banger outliers like mister softee, palestinian chicken, and happy new year. actually s7 is pretty good overall by dint of being the seinfeld season but its pretty diminishing returns beyond that point imo

come to think of it its slightly hackneyed that larry doesnt even have a wallet in his pants to set up that joke. curb definitely aint cooking the way it used to

now I’m thinking too far into this setup but apparently larry would rather wear tacky glasses to a function than briefly stick his hand into a clean toilet. hes wearing his regular glasses at the end of the episode so he fished them out himself after the housekeeper threw him the gloves and they’re taut enough to wear without slipping unless he’s looking straight down (into a toilet). he had the time to rinse and dry his regular pair so he was rocking the auntie specs just cause as mentioned by others the writing for this episode felt slack with things not really going anywhere like the siri bit, the cake bit, the concierge escort, etc., as well as the big episode-ending joke being a trump mugshot parody. not saying it isn’t funny but it really seems underbaked even compared to season 11. there are some strange editing choices, probably informed by the strike. apparently they initially wrapped filming in march 2023 and the trump mugshot was august 2023 so they’ve definitely taken the extra time to tweak things that does increase the chances that the series ends with larry and leon on a flight to tel aviv, looking to occupy some rear end at a rave in re’im

I only knew him from curb but he kicked rear end in it, especially twenty years ago before he got gaunt. the brunt of his career was before I was born but if he was in an episode it was likelier to be funny than not. rip to a real one.

curb has been so underwhelming the last few seasons that the thread is now producing funnier and more cohesive ideas than what was aired

fwiw I liked season 10 (the mocha joe season) but 11 and 12 largely stunk. there are intermittent high points but what larry wants to gripe about is so tersely strung together and dated that it detracts from the riffing you mention (which definitely was also prevalent prior to these past seasons, so having more room for it just highlights how lacking the overall plot is). examples off the top of my head, there was an extended siri riff, the wordle spoiler argument, jeff referencing the will smith slap, and the rudy hair dye if comedians had more room to riff with larry then it’s a shame that ike barinholtz, conan, matt berry, bill hader in season 11, et al’s parts were underwhelming and underdeveloped not to say that curb is awful. concepts like dream scheming and the gettysburg piss are funny. its that there isn’t as much connective tissue between scenes in contrast to prior seasons. even after larry trips on a long coat and pisses himself at ted danson’s play he’s driving home with unsoiled pants immediately afterward my takeaway from this season is that larry really hates cleaning staff he perceives as lazy

they filmed him drowning in a pool as a series finale for last season but didn’t end up using it, probably a similar case this time again where if the curb crew ever wanted more money they can just come back for a special or for season 13 https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/tv/tv-features/curb-your-enthusiasm-showrunner-larry-david-death-scene-1235192054/ speaking of bill hader, I can only wistfully wonder about how barry s4 would have played out if it weren’t for the pandemic
