I like music videos that have a gimmick. And by 'gimmick' I don't mean stuff like costumes or animation or elaborate storylines. I mean gimmicks, the kind of thing where it's clear that the production team figured out a trick, and then used it over and over so that regardless of the quality of the song, you watch it just to see what they do with the trick next. OK Go's videos are the obvious answer; I wouldn't recognise any of their songs if they came on the radio, but, drat, their videos are seared into my brain. I feel like Take on Me by A-Ha should be the poster child for this thread. Yes it includes all the things OP says not to include, but also holy poo poo if it wasn't the best gimmick video ever. No need to post it as we all know it.
