mysterious frankie posted:(Sinkhole, which I haven’t watched yet) Sinkhole was meh. Like The Children Under the House, it felt like a short story just baaaaarely uplifted into a youtube series, but it was way less interesting to me, I think because it’s a cosmic horror, end of the world thing, and there are so many analog horror series doing that right now in much more creative/weird ways and putting in more effort to boot. The Children Under the House was a low stakes ghost story and that made it refreshing

Thanks to the poster who recommended Nexpo early in the thread. I’ve been binging them, can’t stop. But man the tone veers wildly, it’ll be a little ghost story or ufo thing and then the next one is a YouTube account of an old man visibly dying of mouth cancer or a story about a toddler being filmed tortured his whole life. Come on dog…

Nexpo is good at creating a vibe but he also loving phones it in a lot by throwing a lot of convoluted detours in, intentionally obfuscates facts for sake of the narrative or like you said just outright framing some atrocity as a "spooky mystery". the experience of watching his videos is basically you're basically getting on a lovely cheap haunted house ride where there's a 20% chance you're just gonna be slowly rolling past some photo of a brutal crime scene blown up on a wall

Re: Nexpo - To be fair, the series is called "Disturbing Things from Around the Internet" and not "Creepy Ghost Stories". I like it because it's a reminder of the darker aspects of life that we often don't think about that might be right under our nose or just out of sight. I also don't mind the shifts in tone, it's kind of necessary and also keeps you on your toes for the next segment.

Malls freak me out even under the best circumstances; after seeing Kane’s video (and multiple plays of SH3…and the time I got stuck in the closed PPL Center thanks to a wacky security guard when I was just trying to see my concussion doctor), I might just never go in one again. The videos are a little predictable and slightly cheesy, but still atmospheric and well done (especially for such a young guy on probably very little budget). He has a great knack for building tension.

I remember it being about a guy and his brother, who I think had some kind of mental illness. The guy basically cared for his brother and made a bunch of short, amateur videos about their life together and their challenges. The first few videos were pretty normal and did a good job of convincing the viewer that it wasn't going to become anything weird, but then things slowly went off the rails. I very distinctly remember one video that was from the brother's POV where he was filming something bad happening from under a bed. glad you appreciated it too! update on Eventide Media Center: from what I can discern from the comments sections of the series, the original creator deleted everything in an apparent fit of pique and disappeared from the internet, possibly with Patreon cash. so now the fans have claimed the project as their own, with new "additions" to the "lore", all of which I'm dismayed to report stink on ice. It's a shame, as the first series of videos showed some real inventiveness, even though the author's reach frequently exceeded his grasp imo SatansOnion fucked around with this message at 06:35 on Feb 20, 2024 |

My House Walkthrough, Nexpo, and Nick Crowley are all very good recs. Of Nick Crowley, this is probably the scariest video I've seen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AV0kcKSgC5Y&t=1s It's the one of Chinese urban explorer Beanbag Adventures finding a lot of bad stuff in an "abandoned" building. Out of morbid curiosity, I went and looked at the uncensored videos and can confirm those are not props. Also good is ReignBot. Similar to Crowley is her series "Stories From Out Disturbing World" (though she also covers a lot of true crime). Very well-researched and willing to debunk things if she finds them sketchy. Fascinating Horror covers disasters, both manmade and natural. My favorite gothic horror movie, The Innocents (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpFEXmmiAt0), is up in full on YT. Starring Deborah Kerr, script by Truman Motherfuckin' Capote. And, like... this one might be a weird recommend, but here's a TV adaptation of Whistle and I'll Come to You (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRGfEk0cnL4). Weird because it seems like you've had to had a specific sort of nightmare to find it scary but if it hits, it hits. Sorry, I know a lot of this is real stuff. I have a playlist of short horror stories I haven't revisited in a while, so I'mma do that and get back to you with the good ones. (:

It's also funny to see that young people see what, to me, was normal childhood experiences (going to the mall, watching VHS tapes, toy commercials) as sinisiter and creepy. In 20 years will there be spooky stories about scrolling through TikTok?

I've watched a few of the Nexpo videos, and they're very well done. If I have a silly little gripe, it's his nearly constant dramatic pauses. He does it way too often to have any affect. I bothered looking up to see what's been going on, and it's two things: 1) they were successful in kickstarting a related tabletop RPG in under 8 hours and they hit their initial funding goal several times over. I think the whole universe is a little small to make a TTRPG out of it.... but whatever, go off king, make it good. the other remaining free time is towards... 2) ...raising a newborn. extremely valid. think im gonna shelve watching horror till this weekend. probably isn't healthy watching terrifying/unnerving things before bed every night, especially on weeknights.

I love his stuff about the paranormal and general mysteries, and his strange things from around the web videos are great fun, but sometimes he gets into really dark true crime/abuse stories and that stuff just depresses me. Luckily he signals pretty clearly when a video is going to be less “spooky monsters” and more “Lacrima Unfortunato: the developmentally disabled orphan who was forced to live in a lit coal furnace” so I don’t accidentally throw a bummer on while trying to wind down for the day.
