You get a cup of split masoor dal (lentils), a tablespoon of cumin, and like 2 cups of water? I forget. 3? Then you put it in the instant pot, and make chhonk (olive oil, cumin seeds, and red chile flakes, med-hi heat for about 10 seconds until the seeds are brown). Then you just dump it all together over basmati rice. It's a simple recipe and it's hella tasty. |

I hope I didn't skip a step. There's a book called "Indian-Ish" by Priya Krishna with the "basic dal" recipe I'm recalling from memory here. Probably one of our top 3 cookbooks, chez cruft. |

Well, the can of beans was already open, which I'm going to count as a win. The burriot was tasty, as usual, and there's still plenty of salsa left. I did have to spend most of the day working in the car, but I had ruby with me in the back seat (she's my little dog), and I listened to Dianne Reeves albums all day, so overally, pretty chill last day of work. I'm gonna rate it a 6 out of 7!

There should be bigger celebrations for important financial milestones like this. In cruft news, I got to read all day on a choo-choo train, then I got to walk around New Orleans in the rain with the cool walking stick I got for xmas from jr. The train conductor asked if I needed help getting downstairs, which was sweet of him (I don't, the stick is just so I can get an arm/heart workout). I've never been in this part of the country before and it's pretty, but it also makes me appreciate my home! Some other irritating stuff happened today too, but I'm giving today 5/7. |

The thing I didn't want to attend is turning out to be wildly more productive than I imagined, which is great. New Orleans (where the thing is) is a pretty cool town, even for a dude like me who likes to find quiet places to just exist in. On the way back to the hotel I walked through some super cool smaller roads that felt like Montreal but in the Caribbean? I loved the vibe. P. good day overall, 6/7

I feel like it wouldn't be the worst idea to talk about when events happened relative to me opening that can of refried beans. "Oh, it was 6 or 7 years before cruft opened the can of beans when I first started to suspect something about Margaret" You know. That kind of thing. |
