It was the 1970's and there was no internet and heck, even phone calls cost a lot of money (trying calling Poughkeepsie at noon, wow!). So when folks were home alone they talked to themselves in mirrors. Everyone did it, no biggie.

There's so many big name actors like that, that just act like themselves (at least in later movies, maybe they had something more in earlier movies). The folks who actually change for different roles are by far the exception.
