Justice was my favorite album for a while after buying it and I was just really getting into metal and I legit thought metal bands just didn't need a bass part

Newsted is a perfectly fine bassist, Metallica's actual problem is that their drummer hasn't practiced playing drums in 20 years and his tone sucks poo poo

about a year and a half ago Preston and Steve had a game where they played just the bass and drums from songs. Got 9 of 10

I've heard that lars' drum tracks on justice are cut together from hundreds of takes back when you had to do that poo poo by splicing 2 inch tape together with a razor.

Yeah Newsted was fine, the guy in the OP is playing the actual bass parts it's just not zeroed out in the mix and he uses his fingers instead of a pick. Trujilo owns but I like him better with ST than with Metallica, Claypool would have been way too weird to be in Metallica, he may have strangled Lars though so there's that.

A few years ago my brother and I were hanging out with one of our buddies and making fun of St. Anger, and said buddy hadn't heard it since it came out when we were in high school. We put on the title track on youtube, and he started cracking up and told us to stop loving with him with some youtube edit.

Then we played another song, and another, and the smile disappeared from his face.

Gotta admit, tho, I am really partial to that special OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Hetfield gives near the end of St. Anger

My friend was a massive Metallica fan and when he sat down to listen to St Anger, he kept getting more and more angry and desperate that the next track “HAS to be better.”

Also lol that Lars and James claim that didn’t intend to hide the bass on In Justice For All, they were just deaf as gently caress from touring and kept turning up the sound on all the parts except the bass.

Jason might not have been a genius like Cliff or as skilled as Rob but he was still a good player. What makes him special is that his stage presence was insane. His backing vocals and energy are a thousand times better than the other guys. These days it's actually hard for me to listen to Creeping Death, Whiplash or Seek and Destroy unless it's a live version with Jason taking over verses and just absolutely killing it.

Claypool would've been wasted in Metallica because James and Lars run everything with an iron fist ever since Cliff died.

Lars sucks and it's fun to see those shows with Joey Jordison and Dave Lombardo behind the kit and be like "what if they had a better drummer?" but Lars' creative force in the studio is something that those other guys couldn't replicate so basically Lars is just the best drummer specifically for Metallica.

Obviously they've made some poo poo music along the way but as the only metal band on the planet who can literally sell out stadium shows based on their name alone, they clearly did something right. They also still put on a killer show for a bunch of 60 year olds playing metal so I highly recommend that if you haven't seen them and have the opportunity, just give it a shot.

VVVV yeah that was definitely a ballsy decision, gotta give them credit for allowing that to be released when it doesn't really put them in the best light. At the same time, it shows that they're real people that are hosed up in their own special ways just like the rest of us.

This is a good post, and I agree that Newsted vocals make Creeping Death and Seek and Destroy work, although I would've never put that together myself beyond a general dissatisfaction with later versions I heard from Youtube.

Honestly I think Claypool would've worked in Metallica, although I dunno if he would've lasted. Sizzle Fry and Sailing The Seas of Cheese are absolutely not Metallica albums, but the speed and technical chops are there.

Yeah that's exactly it. He's clearly one of the most skilled bassists of all time but his style just wouldn't fit for Metallica. His creative energy would also be stifled and would've quit anyway. The ONLY reason Jason left was because he wanted to do a little side project (Echo Brain) because his creative voice was barely ever acknowledged due to James and Lars dominating the songwriting process and James refused to let that happen because he was an rear end in a top hat who demanded that nobody could do anything except for Metallica no matter how small it was. Like, no way in hell did Jason's side project ever have a chance of ever competing with Metallica but it didn't matter to James.

If non-genius Jason Newstead left because of that, it would probably take Claypool like 72 hours to realize he can't handle being locked in a cage creatively so he'd just peace out.

Lars and James were so messed up on booze, emotional pain, coke, and whatever else and they kept telling the engineer to turn down the bass.

Really it depends on how you ask and what year it is. The fact that Jason hasn't poo poo all over Lars and James every chance he gets over this mystifies me. Every single fan would completely understand if not encourage it.

I saw the Justice tour that year (88 or 89) and it was amazing. The crowd went apeshit when Jason played a solo.

justice has to be in the top 5 worst mixes for a major label album if it isn't the all time worst. The way it was recorded didn't help because it's very sterile but the mix, so bad.

pretty much ever since I got really into post-80s metal and started playing metal drums, I have made it an ethos that "putting your name on anything with tone like Lars' is a shameful act"

when I tune up and set up a kit the way I want it, I generally try to go for a Des Kensel/Mark Greening on Dopethrone kinda big, empty, loud kinda sound vs. "clicks and farting on a snare drum"

I work more on the tech/production side when I do music work anymore these days, though, playing is more of a fun hobby (especially as my back edges closer and closer to oblivion)

I think Jason is just a really awesome dude who's way above being a petty bitch. Also, he was a huge Metallica fan and ended up playing with them, getting rich as gently caress and touring the world for 15 years experiencing poo poo that most people never will so he's probably very grateful for just being along for the ride.
