Yeah, PG, Kawhi, and Harden all took cracks at him one-on-one and mostly got tough mid-range looks and contested pull up 3s out of it. Which great players will sometimes hit anyway, of course, but from the defender's perspective, it's all you can really ask for.

He still has too many lapses and will never move well enough laterally to be a defensive anchor or anything, but I do think he's had a little bit of a lightbulb moment this year in terms of just recognizing he's big and strong and there's value in being a big strong guy in the other guy's way. The lapses and inconsistency are still too much for me to be like "Luka secret good defender confirmed" or anything, but he is capable of competitive defense and he's doing it more often these days.

His size plus knowing where the passing lanes ought to be and what folks are trying to do seem like they make up for those lateral limitations - all he has to do is try. And it really seems like he and Kyrie were both trying on D last night. Example setting from them ought to be meaningful.

They aren't going to be top tier, but moving them from bad to decent makes a big impact.

The quickest substitution in the history of the NBA

People like to jump on Dame but there were multiple plays per quarter last night where the Bucks as a team clearly had no idea what they were supposed to be doing on defense, they're very poorly coached

seeing the wider philly fans communal meltdown over that game has been fascinating to watch, the series isn't even close to over and it feels like most of them are throwing in the towel because a coin flip of a ref's call didn't go their way. is this still part of the process?

When Luka was the primary defender last night, the Clippers were 2-17.

Reminder, all I pointed out was Luka isn't bad at defense.

Also, lol that Jason Kidd's one elite coaching ability is challenging bad calls. Sucks the one thing he is good at is the only easy to quantify.

I'm going to the next game and am super hyped. It is going to be hard for Dallas to keep this up without Gafford and THJr. (ignore that their best playoff run in years occurred in a year THJr was injured.) I haven't seen updates on either player yet, but I'm going to assume they are both out.

Luka had 1 good defensive game. How many future mvps is that worth? 3? 4? Please use this 1 game has proof of luka defensive chops and let it supersede any lapses in the future.

Luka improved as a defender this season. I tried to let people in the thread know during the season but I suspect most posters do not watch the Mavericks as often as myself. Once again, I am not calling Luka an elite defender. I'm merely pointing out that he shouldn't be considered a bad defender on average anymore.

I think the last time I paid attention to the 76ers was The Bounce, and I was too wrapped up in nirvana to see what they were saying about it.

I figured dumping ben simmons would bring more hope to the team, drat.

Luka actually tried on defense, wasn't horrible at it, but the very idea that he'd do it threw the Clippers for a fuckin loop

He did but he still typically pulls the easiest assignments and the team also is very aggressive at providing help, both of which really help with the kinds of "opponents went x/y when guarded by Luka" numbers.

He has definitely improved, a couple seasons ago he'd be ok in the first half and then an just sorta flailing in 2nd halfs and now he is a lot more locked in for the full 48. BUT I also think he's the kinda guy who probably falls under the "The team is helping to hide" more than "improving his team defense", though the Mavs defense is kinda weird. It feels like they're more like "2 guards and 3 wings" kinda defense so it's hard to know what baseline looks like.

i'm actually seeing the opposite?

the majority of people i talk to IRL and on various discords are confident. angry about what happened with the multiple missed fouls and timeouts but i can honestly say ive never seen the collective city be so optimistic about a team down 0-2

reddit is about making your comment so engaging it gets attention, not actually about being interesting or representing your opinion.

You're supposed to be down 0-2 if you're the lower seed. That said, missing out on splitting the first two is definitely deflating because going into 2 home games 1-1 is a really nice position.

I know man. They're so likable. You've got this team of tall guys plus mr tenacious 6'4 vs Team BIG FAT PHONY in Phoenix. The team they blew up to get KD there was something special. It's not 2017 anymore. It's in fact 7 years post that year

They’re an incredibly well built team. Savvy vet PG, explosive young SG, big athletic wings, DPOY center. And KAT! After everyone clowned on them for what they gave up to get Gobert it’s cool to see it actually working.

They were awesome until they weren’t. I wanted them to blow it up after losing by 500 points to the Mavs at home in a game 7.

I think this team would be salvageable even after the Beal trade if they’d just kept Cam Payne. No facilitators going into the season and never addressing it is bball malpractice.

I think about him defensively the way I think about like a catch-and-shoot 3 specialist or something. When those guys randomly hit 7 threes, that's Luka randomly putting together several good iso possessions against Harden and Kawhi. When those guys go 1/10, that's Luka trying but outmatched. When those guys only take two shots, that's Luka successfully hidden on a weak offensive player. When those guys are passing out of wide open shots with 10 feet of space, that's Luka not trying and wasting too much time yelling at refs. I have no idea if this makes sense. The point is Luka will always be one of the weaker defenders on the court for the Mavs at a given time but there are different ways to be that.
