It makes sense, Miami desperately needs someone who can be a short area YAC guy. There aren't a ton of guys who have a lower depth of target in the NFL than Smith. They've been absolutely dire there, despite what you'd expect from an offense closely related to San Francisco's and the slander that comes Tua's way.

Do hope he's a bridge to someone in the draft, though.

How many Championships?
https://x.com/PewterReport/status/1765442708531737008?s=20

quote:

Here’s an update on the negotiations between the Bucs and quarterback Baker Mayfield: Both sides are still not close to agreeing to terms on a contract extension.

Pewter Report has spoken with multiple sources recently and while there has been some progress since talks began in earnest at the NFL Scouting Combine last week, the Bucs and Mayfield’s camp were very far apart to begin with.

How far? Nearly $20 million apart.

Pewter Report is not sure which side made the initial offer – whether it was the Bucs or Mayfield’s agent, Jack Mills. But Mayfield’s camp opened negotiations with an offer rumored to be at $44 million per year. The thinking there is that Mayfield is a better quarterback than New York Giants starter Daniel Jones, who makes an average of $40 million per season.

Tampa Bay is rumored to have either countered – or started – with an offer of $25 million per year, which is the Geno Smith contract. After a career turnaround season in Seattle in 2022, replacing Russell Wilson as the starter, Smith signed a three-year, $75 million contract extension with the Seahawks.

That’s a big gap – a $19 million chasm, to be exact.

It also states in the article that Baker lost $12m in a fraudulent investment scheme.

Baker should 100% cash in while he can. Dude looked great last year and there's no guarantee he looks like that this year with a new OC or even a potential injury (as happened in 2021). He's starting high but if bucs don't pay he can hit free agency and some dumb team will throw that much at him and force bucs to either match or let him go.

Baker excels in a Play-Action/Wide-Zone Scheme or a Full-On Pass Attack Scheme. The good news is that both schemes are so relevant in today's game that he should be able to find work for many teams. I hope he gets his money. He is fun to watch.

Tampa will likely hold firm or give him an incentive deal to pretend it's over $30m

Because who is giving Baker that contract? Just because the Giants were dumbasses doesn't mean you have to be.

Baker Mayfield is solid, but he is not worth Daniel Jones money. He should barter with the Giants for a big payday, because Daniel Jones is clearly not worth Daniel Jones money.

Baker wants to play with Mike Evans.

I can't blame him for that, either. If you had Mike Evans to throw to, would you want to go anywhere else?

I'm sure he wants to play with Evans due to established chemistry but Adams would be a really good alternate option.

To be fair, a washed Ekeler is still leagues better than Melvin "Multiple game-losing fumbles" Gordon. He may not be a quarter as good as he used to be, but I still think he adds more than he'd hurt.

Ouch. I didn’t expect them to release Morse, especially in tandem with trading Bates, the incumbent back-up, but they’re really going all in on clearing cap space.

Guess center just shot up the list of needs. Not surprised to see them cut Poyer and White: the former might have a little left but isn’t really durable enough to be an every down safety anymore. The latter has suffered two season-ending injuries in as many years and is getting to the age a lot of corners fade out anyway.

I think they’re both possibly good signings as long as they’re cheap, but definitely dicey otherwise.
