I've made a huge mistake.
Although they had a bunch of draft picks, they were mostly day 3. I think missing out on that third round comp pick left Beane without draft capital to be aggressive, and it seems none of the other GMs were inclined to play ball with what he did have. He reportedly tried to trade up in the third and got no bites; perhaps there was another WR he was targetting.

Next year they should have an additional second round pick and two extra in the 4th (if the NFL don't gently caress the comp picks again), so I would expect an aggressive Beane. If the Vikings suck, they could have picks 32 and 33....

Yeah, I'm pretty okay with what they did, and lots of teams were fishing for WRs and that position thinned out a lot in the 2nd. As long as Keon Coleman turns into at least a solid contributor and they get some hits elsewhere, they did pretty well.

This was always going to be a bit of a transitional year, and they all but committed themselves to that when they dumped Diggs. We'll have lots of cap to work with next year, even before jettisoning Von Miller.

And def hope they shuffle McD off: 5-6 in the playoffs and no road wins is...not encouraging. To say nothing of losing to both the Chiefs and Bengals at home.

He was reportedly good on special teams, so probably the current favourite for punt/kick returns in the upcoming season.

I can largely buy that he just had a lovely 40 and plays faster, but I can't get over that he can't separate against college DBs and that his contested catch % isn't even particularly good.

But he seems pretty funny so hopefully he's actually good.

as a FSU fan i will say the separation thing is overblown, jordan travis doesn't exactly throw with timing or with good accuracy so there's a lot of having to run back for a ball or stopping entirely to wait for it to arrive

Wait running routes at the combine? lmao come on. Who gives a gently caress about that

Game speed gps is somewhat useful info. Combine route gps is bottom of the barrel poo poo

He's no slower than other successful NFL receivers in any case. I would worry about his hands, his bad route-running, his 56 percent catch rate and his overall inconsistency before I worried about his speed.

I mean the big contracts they gave out have been to:

Christian Barmore - Very good DT
Michael Onwenu - excellent guard, solidly good RT that has to play there out of need.
Kyle Dugger - Very good strong safety that was forced to play out of position a lot due to need last year.

Then they re-signed these guys for reasonably cheap deals:

Hunter Henry - Reliable receiving option
Kendrick Bourne - Reliable receiving option, very cheap
Anfernee Jennings - Run stuffing end who does a lot of work in a Belichick system.
Josh Uche - Dirt cheap pass rushing specialist who only does work if Judon's there to take eyes off him.

Like just due to need, I wish they had signed Tyron Smith or Calvin Ridley even if I don't think one of them is an answer and the other is comically overpaid, but they still would/should have done all these moves with that.

Diva Cupcake
Aug 15, 2005

Yeah, I think I was just expecting that given they had the most or close to the most cap room going into the offseason, almost none of it was allocated to bringing in any outside talent. Not that they're bad contracts.

It's very clear this is a tear it down to the studs situation.

Kalli

Oh I agree, but also looking at free agency around the league... there's very few contracts I would've wanted.

The cap going up like it did hosed us a bit. There's a few trades I wish we could've gotten in on, but like even loving Michael Pittman Jr got franchised due to all that cap space.

My Hot Take is the Patriots basically did everything they realistically could/should have. It will probably still suck in 2024 because a) their offensive talent to start with was SO BAD and b) most QBs bust no matter how high you pick or how hyped they are. Like even if they hit multiple times in this draft they are probably pretty bad!

Looking back at free agent signings I wish they could have landed Mike Williams or Hollywood Brown. Neither is an alpha WR1 but is there any doubt they'd still be by FAR the best receiver on this team? They're both on cheap 1 year deals, we couldn't beat that?

Yep, the Jets got gigafucked by the Falcons' insanity. That was obvious on draft night. Olu is a great consolation prize, though.

They would, but Hollywood would most likely be a repeat of Agholor in this offense. Williams is a weirder case because he's great until he gets hit and explodes. I guess I would've liked to sign him, but I think we just absolutely had to find a LT somewhere in FA / the draft and... didn't.

Like, I was willing to be optimistic about the offense doing something the last two years until proven otherwise, but I just don't see how we aren't a bottom 5 offense this year. I think we're worse at just about every offensive position then we were for Mac's rookie season, and I don't see how we don't have a full year of Vederian Lowe caliber left tackle play.
