at 13 i had a summer job with a long train commute so i read the paper every day and noticed that stories about palestinian attacks on israelis were always front page news with big color photos of people crying and then much much worse attacks on palestinians - like helicopter gunship assassinations that kill a dozen other people - were always a brief paragraph on the world section at the back of the A section. so i figured out that the media was for propaganda and that got the ball rolling and unfortunately the ball stopped on anarchism for a few years but i got better

If the government still worked and sequestration didn't hamstring our nations defensive capabilities I would have been the model far-right undercover cop infiltrating the left. A decade ago, longer, they after the layoff style sortition.... my buddy wanted in, I wanted out and none of it mattered. They privatized the base housing, I went to the meetings and town halls where they said how it'll be so much better to pay our rent on the economy rather than have it under military command. I knew this country was fuckin cooked, so I hard separated from the fed and I set off to Los Angeles to marry a rich woman.

An ideological back and forth. I grew up in a former socialist state being crushed and dismembered from within and from without. Read a lot socialist literature because, well, it's what we had, and kinda made sense. My father put his life and livelyhood on the line fighting the privatizations in Serbia, and in particular that of the company he was employed in when poo poo hit the fan. I typed into MSWord a bunch of documents he wrote down by hand, and while I didn't understand most of it, I understood enough to get the gist of what was going on. Ultimately, while there were some victories, and he even managed to force the new owners to pay out some of the salaries they owed to the workers, he lost the fight. When the defeat broke him, it also broke me. Without going into details, it's also a minor miracle that I didn't go rabidly anticommunist after encountering our local Stalinists who were going full "ahahahaha, suck it revisionists, now everyone will see I was right and will have no other choice but to follow me, ahahahaha, eat that american boot, hahahaha it's beautiful watching you suffer" at basically everyone trying to fight back against what the West was doing to us. It's been decades, and I can't help but notice that the guys in question did jack poo poo, for all their talk of 'inevitable'. Read Capital vol1 in highschool, initially just because I was looking up stuff about the industrial revolution and someone mentioned there's a bunch of anecdotes about it there. Picked up a bunch of theory sort of inbetween the stuff I actually wanted to read, and it stuck. Crystalized into sort of left liberal, but from a different angle than most. I watched crushing defeat with my own eyes, but also knew who was involved and didn't trust them at all, and sort of approached it as damage control rather than a coherent position to hold. (My father went very conservative, because it was easier than facing reality. I love that man for all the things he hates himself for, and hate him for all the things he loves himself for) I owe a lot to my mother's late uncle and to my sister(well, second cousin, but we grew up very close and see each other as siblings) for being unapologetically communist, and also being wonderful people who kept me from taking a bad road. Great-uncle had some wonderful anecdotes to tell about his time on Cuba, and it sort of made me resilient against any point made by someone trying to poo poo on them. My posting on something awful had almost no impact on my views. Eventually, IRL stuff happened that dragged my out of my stupor. e: In retrospect, something awful was for me an observation window into how yankees act and think, and I'd often go out of my way just poking and prodding to see what happens. my dad has issued a correction as of 17:18 on Mar 13, 2024 |

my freshman year of college I was watching Obama answer questions on a livestream and he laughed off someone asking about the legalization of Marijuana as not important. Sat there thinking "well it probably seems pretty loving important to the people that have to live the rest of their lives in prison because of it" until I realized this guy wasn't actually cool and didn't give a poo poo about anything.
