For a long time, I thought maybe I'd hallucinated this show. I mean, it was 1976, I was eight years old, and a lot has happened since then. Twenty years ago, I went looking for it, but the internet wasn't ready then. But now, like ruins of a lost civilization from which the covering sands have begun to blow away, traces have emerged.

I give to you, gentlegoons, The Kids from C.A.P.E.R:

The adventures of PT, Bugs, Doomsday, and Doc sprung from the minds of some of the folks responsible for the Monkees' TV series ten years earlier. They thought that maybe they could recapture some of that magic in a Saturday-morning-friendly format, and set about it with much of the same formula--lovely manufactured pop, absurdist non-sequitur humor, and merch hooks. They had an extra angle, as well, namely that all the plots revolved in some capacity around the Magic Mountain amusement park, the show effectively serving as a 22-minute infomercial.

8-year-old Madurai didn't really wonder at what weird financial arrangements had allowed this show to exist. I was just ready to see these four jokers play detective in their converted hot dog van (the Big Bologna!) navigated to their next case by directions from talking shark Mr. Featherstone. (The shark was easily my favorite part. Unconvincingly played by a puppet, Mr. Featherstone communicated in gibberish to Doomsday, who's schtick was that he was Good With Animals) (It's been noted earlier in this thread that the Seventies was filled with TV that for a variety of reasons, totally sucked rear end. This show is of a time)

The show ran for one half an interrupted season, a total of 13 episodes. Because I hate you, here's one:

I can't play, as I vividly remember the show.

I tried to describe The Highwayman to a young person, who probably still thinks I'm lying and/or crazy.

And yet, it remains Filmation's peak achievement.

Despite all my mockery, I do sort of get that. It's a continuing story, and there are flashes (if you pardon the pun) of interesting visuals. People die, if not characters. I have zero familiarity with anything previous of Flash Gordon, but I can only assume it is faithful to the earlier material.

Faithful-ish. The original newspaper strips rambled all over, and much like golden age comics, did not give one singular gently caress about consistency.
