Or so I've heard. Two of my good friends used it as a store to sell their spicy content, one of them making a living out of it. From what they said, it went as follow:

There was a change in the TOS to forbid anything NSFW overall, with not mention of it to the vendors and only 24h of warning. Going against Gumroad's TOS can usually mean a ban and seizure of any money not yet transfered. Obviously people then pre-emptively started self censoring and deleting their stores.

Now, this is my question, which my friends had no answers for: this supposedly came about from the payment processors exerting pressure on Gumroad (remove NSFW or else...). Isn't that what also made OnlyFans almost pivot to safe for work content a few years back? Aren't payment processors supposed to just act as a path for the money, leaving the legality of a thing according to the place the money is being traded from? There's a sort of patronizing behavior in there that really rubs me the wrong way, and I can't really put my finger on the why. That's without even the personal thing of seeing the one friend that relied on it for their income devastated at having to find an alternative at a time where things are very tight money wise.

I imagine the payment processors' pressure must have been very large indeed, since as far as I know, wasn't Gumroad mostly NSFW content? lol

What is it that got payment processers get a bug up their asses about porn? Is it still that moral panic about how everyone in it is trafficked or are they all run by weird porn hating Christians or just don't like money?

Getting naked on the internet is like America's only growth industry.

Everyone blames supply here but once again this is demand's fault. The cornerstone of any payment processor is that they need to be a trusted name for absolutely every type of consumer - from little Timmy buying Fortnite bucks to uncle Jimbo buying guns. If they could loop porn into that category they absolutely would. Lmao if you don't think they wouldn't happily take sleezy perve money.

But it taints their brand. Buying into porn means they lose out on Timmy and Jimbo, and this is because Timmy has parents and Jimbo stole his brother's credit card. Suddenly if it gets out your company processes porn, well, that's all you're known for now. This is why there are porn specific processors like Epoch, even though they all funnel to the same banks. But to the businesses that use them that's not what's important - what's important is that you have to use porno flavor of Chase, and not just good ol' fashioned Chase. The banks make you eat the taint (heh), while they get to be the hydra of many heads and get off (heh) scot free.

All of this is to say the moral panic is in morons. In people. The consumer. Banks are just navigating the landscape, and businesses are footing the bill.

Didn't all of this bullshit with payment processors deciding to become moral arbitrators happen as a direct result of PornHub - the single largest purveyor of pornographic video content and transactions on the internet - not bothering to remove CSAM when it was pointed out to them in MULTIPLE articles and reports?

Yeah, there's a reason the stigma against pornography exists, it's because the entire industry is poo poo. Sucks that it catches indie folks in it though (speaking as someone who made a living from it about 10-15 years ago), but even then there is a preponderance of stupid, illegal poo poo in the indie scene that shouldn't exist too.

Exhibit A right here of why your beloved Gumbo webzone is losing its "spicy content."

1. Broad pearl clutching statements like "the entire industry is poo poo."
2. Bringing up the absolute worst (and illegal) aspect of the industry when no one was talking about it. Better homeschool your kids because of school shootings! If bad things happen in an industry, obviously thats evidence enough to shun it whole cloth.
3. Aw shucks judgmental mentality. Sucks that capital is going to choke out your preferred form of perfectly legal expression! Probably better for Society overall though.

There are literally billions of people just like this. It's sad to me that conversations about porn haven't evolved since man drew boobs on cave walls.

The real answer, for now, is a middle ground payment processor that caters to adult content that may not actually be porn. The "rated R" of processors, even though it will take on a bit of the porno stank anyway it won't be looped in with the harder sites like PornHub.

Might not see it in our lifetimes though, at least not with people like this guy here spreading his discourse.

Do better and maybe the judgemental mentality could go beyond 'rampant enabling of illegal and quasi-legal content on the top pages on the entire internet' into something worth calling a proper snipe-hunt. Yes, porn is totally legal and cool and nobody is saying it isn't. But when you have PornHub and other sites flying in the face of actual litigation and the neo-satanic panic inherent to the child/sex trafficking stuff (which DOES happen albeit not at the rampancy suggested by the fucko Qanon types), of course payment processors are going to pick their loving sticks up and go home. That's also not to mention the pure amount of fraud and bullshit that piggybacks off the adult entertainment industry which makes already super risk-averse industries like goddamned payment processors way less likely to take a risk on you, especially if your tittybar website doesn't even enforce their own TOS. This is explicitly why you don't see an 'R-rated' payment processor. The card providers and banks aren't going to take the risk as a whole, and good luck getting PCI auditors on board, which directly cuts your small time business completely out at every level.

But I mean, go off, duderino. Sorry I attacked your drug. I've only been working in the biz since I turned 18 and I obviously don't know what I'm talking about. Also thanks for the misgender :)

I've worked at a place that made millions in adult content in addition to their perfectly legitimate products. The main component of Visa threatening to go wasn't the association with porn. It was the amount of charge backs that would happen as a disproportionate rate from any other industry.

When Visa was considering bailing, I've never seen a large company attempt to pivot so hard. Visa threatens to go? loving VISA? It's all hands on deck panic. So I think it might be chategbacks.

So you're saying that if all the millions of pornhub users switched to whatever website you use that your sites administration would hire enough staff to personally moderate the entire website? Because that's what it would take and I doubt it would be any better.

Also gently caress off with saying poo poo like "be better" and being hostile about assuming gender when you did it in your own post.

And calling porn a drug? Why would you use such hostile pearl clutching language about your own profession?

You stink
