udp over tcp over ssh over tcp, because ssh tunnels only support tcp so you have to cobble together some lovely proxy in python 'cause some hardware you use on the remote network expects udp broadcasts on its subnet to notify it you want to connect so it can open a tcp connection towards the source client which you then have to reverse ssh tunnel back to the original client. also you have to start the proxy on the remote machine using remote desktop so it can open a connection towards the original client because you don't control the nat and firewall on the remote network so you can't just accept outside connections directly

loving rube-goldberg-rear end pile of poo poo all because someone decided to not just accept a goddamn tcp connection normally

the chat is irc with the javascript client replacing certain things w/ html ui elements (i.e. emotes). the video stuff is unrelated to the irc stuff afaik, its just presented side by side in the client

irc the protocol was so unimaginably bad that the only possible contender for worse is the plethora of email protocols.

both demonstrating that it is not about protocol quality, it is about use, and human communication is a good use for a protocol.

Why is it bad? Asking honestly because I don't actually know the nitty gritty of the protocol.

It was able to scale out and handle an insane amount of traffic on sub-rpi class hardware which is very impressive.

no identity services was the big miss imo. Also its generally just kinda crufty. DCC is really messy.

your /slap is just a mirc (eww) shortcut for /me slaps blah blah...
well what is /me? it's meant to show up as an action

the idea is, if your nick is butt, normally a client will display your message as:
<butt> i farted
instead you could do a /me and it has a different action appearance, like:
* butt farts
which was kind of neat.

but if you look into the irc protocol, there is absolutely nothing about any action message command
all chat at the protocol level is just a privmsg to the channel
so how does the action work?
irc clients generally have another protocol built in, ctcp, client-to-client protocol.
you use the irc server to exchange info about the ips and ports you are going to connect on, then send your warez (all dcc stuff was done via ctcp commands)
so /me is really... ctcp action to the entire channel! the client just displays it like that, instead of like every other ctcp message
