Because you'll be forced to use them, like it or not, you really can't judge them by their growth rates alone. It's actually about whether you're willing to focus investment on them. There's certain opportunities early characters get that later ones do not, and focusing them on a particular character can give them key advantages over later joining ones, beyond just basic stats.
