Like the premise might be vaguely plausible if it was explained as something the US government transformed into, but apparently it's actually ~~MAGA chuds~~the Sons of Jacob just doing a terrorist attack and magically controlling 90% of the US in its aftermath.

The book doesn't really delve too deeply into any of that, it's more about a vibe than about tolkienesque worldbuilding

(atwood herself has almost certainly said that this is one of the things that makes her a real author instead of a disgusting sci fi/fantasy goblin)

It's basically just Iranian Revolution fanfic but it forgets the part where the country was wracked by mass unrest and violent revolution because basically everyone hated the government, and the fundamentalists only seized power after they stabbed everyone else in the back
