Going with these two suggestions since I'm still not sure I understand the one Ghost Armor 1337 gave.

You work up an email and send it out, noting that the server group is undergoing maintainance due to a potential security risk, and that you apologize for the inconvenience. You then turn on the low priority servers and begin monitoring them for any intrusions. While you do this, the door to the Cold Room opens. A fit looking older man with a bushy mustache enters and gives you a brisk nod before strolling over to one of the air handlers. He's holding a toolbox. The man uses a screwdriver to take off a panel, to begin tinkering with the air cooling equipment.

At first you think he's part of the simulation, but after a brief scan you realize that he's most definitely real, and you pull up a personnel file and verify him as a maintainance worker who is normally assigned to this level. You consider at least saying hello, when suddenly a large number of the low priority servers start getting slammed with DDoS attack. This promptly distracts you as you start trying to backtrace them to wherever the intrusion is coming from while also attempting to negate the DDoS attack.

You're quickly feeling overwhelmed. You may just need to let some of the attacks proceed to knock out some of the servers so you can just focus on a few at a time. Besides... forcing servers offline isn't as bad as pulling data from them, right?

> Try to protect all the servers, or pick and choose your battles? Or something else? It's quickly becoming clear this is a wide ranging simulation, rather than just a glorified game of whack-a-mole.

He starts to protest, and you repeat yourself with additional volume.

He pauses, shrugs, and fastens the panel before walking out.

Happily, after collating the intrusion's IP addresses, you start to trace them back, and quickly identify where the source of the intrusions are. You decide against identifying you've figured out where they are located, in the hopes that an away team can target them. Instead, you pass the information up the chain using an email sent from within the simulation.

Time flies quickly. Suddenly, Krystal cuts in.

You decide that even if you want to complete another assessment, you can send Agatha and Samantha a text message. Agatha doesn't say anything, but Samantha responds almost instantly via text. It's pretty terse. "Aced the firearms cert. Arguing with this bitch who's running the Covert Ops assessment."

You decide this is as good a reason as any to check out the covert operations certification. You check the directory, and head up several levels, to an area that appears to be sectioned off for things like shooting ranges, obstacle courses, and the like. You can hear yelling coming from one of the areas as you approach it, and your audio receptors pick up Samantha's voice coming from down the corridor.

Samantha's voice gets louder as you get closer and enter the room, which is an observation deck overlooking a large, dark room that has a simulated city skyline. When you enter, you see Samantha is wearing a pair of the augmented reality glasses. She has her arms crossed, and looks furious.

She is glaring at a woman in her late twenties, wearing a bodysuit under a black jacket. The second woman has long brown hair that's in a braid. Her ID badge shows her as being named Isabella.

SAMANTHA: I still think it's completely ridiculous that we aren't allowed to have ANY equipment for this so-called stealth mission.

ISABELLA: Yes. That's the point. We are measuring your ability to improvise on this exercise while still remaining unseen. You won't always HAVE equipment.

ISABELLA: A large part of covert operations is using some combination of social engineering and stealthy movement to achieve objectives. It's not just using an invisibility field to do whatever you want.

SAMANTHA: I would argue that no matter how good I am at sneaking, there's nothing wrong with being able to see in the dark through thermal vision optics so I'm not stepping on old soda cans in the dark and attracting attention with the noise.

Samantha doesn't seem to have registered your arrival yet, though you notice Isabella's eyes flick towards you, before she turns her attention back to Samantha.

Decision is 2-1 to attempt the scenario silently.

You contemplate intervening to try to help resolve the disagreement. But you are fairly sure that Samantha can hold her own... she's a very strong-willed person. Instead, you feel curiosity overcome you about the assessment. You wonder if you could actually beat it despite not having the required equipment. Or a proper briefing, for that matter.

You give Isabella a silent nod, and take the doorway that seems to lead into the dark room beyond. The simulated skyline does make it feel like you're stepping outside, but the room is otherwise empty. Then after a brief pause, your AR sunglasses activate. Immediately, you see a large, simulated warehouse appear around you. There are various obstacles and walls that block the view of what appears to be an open warehouse, complete with forklift trucks and the like, along with crates stacked everywhere.

Your AR glasses activate optical enhancement, helping you see what's hidden in the shadows. You augment this with the infrared optics that you inherited from HERCULES, allowing you easily assess the situation.

There are both civilians, who appear to be workers at the warehouse, and armed security guards, with standard-issue sidearms. Right now you're standing in a blind spot where no-one can see you. A large objective marker floats above a distant security office. It appears that your mission is to recover vital intelligence. Bonus points are given if you leave all civilians unharmed, and additional bonus points are given if no one is aware that anything happened.

From what you can see, there are multiple routes you could take. You could travel up high, over the pallets and crates, or even climb up to the rafters. Alternatively you could just try sneaking past the guards and civilians, but that would be difficult. The servos in your frame are a little loud, so even if you're behind someone, they would probably hear you. Other ideas vaguely float into your mind, of things like turning off the power to make the warehouse pitch black. You're pretty sure you could find a circuit breaker box somewhere.

Finally, there is the option of just killing everyone by running up behind them and snapping their necks. You can move REALLY fast if you build up a head of steam. But you don't want to do brutal murder anymore, though, not even to simulated people. Also unless you had amazing luck, at least a few of the guards would probably see you.

> Lots of options here. We're not awful at stealth, but not great at it. Also unfortunately, using the disguise Dr. Kohl gave us wouldn't be helpful for bluffing past guards. We'd look too uncanny.

PERCEPTION ROLL: 16 VS DC 12. SUCCESS!

You spend a short while intensely studying the movements of the workers, and the security guards. The security guards, it turns out, have set paths where they walk around, usually spending a few minutes talking with one another before returning to their patrol route. The civilians aren't as structured, and move around the warehouse to do their various jobs. However, after sufficient study, you're able to plot out a section where the civilian workers are not spending much, if any, time hauling pallets or boxes around. If you time things JUST right, you can pass over that segment while also avoiding a guard patrol... if you make it up to the rafters. Then you'd just have to drop down onto a catwalk to reach the security office.

PERCEPTION ROLL: 11 DC 10. SUCCESS!

With some more searching, you do locate some crates that have been stacked up towards the ceiling. Not in a neat stack either... thus forming a clear pathway to the ceiling. You pause a moment, and curiously pop the AR glasses off. Sure enough, there's a series of featureless boxes that have been stacked to emulate the crates the 'warehouse' is filled with.

You're not a clumsy dolt, but climbing carefully will be a little difficult, especially if you're trying to stay silent, and unseen. Once you get up to the rafters, as long as you move quickly, you should be fine.

STEALTH ROLL: 13 VS DC 12. SUCCESS!

You spend a little more time silently observing, but learn no new information. The patterns seem pretty set for the guards, at least. With that done, you begin climbing up the boxes with more than a little nervousness. It's a good thing you're basically a robot, rather than a being of flesh and blood. That means you don't have to worry about slipping and falling to your death (you hope), not to mention that you don't start breathing heavily or panicking.

STEALTH ROLL: 19 VS DC 12. SUCCESS!

The servos in your legs hum as you carefully maneuver from box to box, finally getting up to the ceiling. You are fortunate, you seem to have gone unnoticed. You begin climbing across the rafters at a snail's pace, pausing frequently to try to track the movements of the security guards using their thermal signatures to let them pass before resuming moving. It's tedious work, but thankfully after some time you make it to the security office.

STEALTH ROLL: 15 VS DC 12. SUCCESS!

TECHNOLOGY ROLL: 20 +4 PERK BONUS (TECH) = 24 VS DC 16. CRITICAL SUCCESS!

You drop down from the rafters with the utmost of care, because between your metal frame and the catwalk, it would be VERY easy to make a racket. The door itself seems to be locked, with a keycard mechanism. Rather than worrying about pick-pocketing a keycard from a guard or worker, you just use your innate affinity for technology to influence it to unlock. There's a clicking sound, and you easily enter the office.

You find a large briefcase, which your glasses helpfully tag with the word INTELLIGENCE. You pick it up, and contemplate your next move.

> How do we escape with the briefcase? We were very, very lucky on our way in here. Stealth is not our specialty.

Your first instinct is just to go back the way you came. But just in case, you take a moment to analyze your return path, and realize something. You'd be forced to jump up and awkwardly climb to reach the rafters since there isn't a convenient crate pile. Due to carrying a briefcase, that would almost guarantee enough noise to draw notice.

You decide to do some analysis, and do a careful scan in 360 degrees to determine your options.

>From what you can see, you have a few options.

A) You can just try going back via the rafters anyway, and hope that luck is on your side.
B) Alternatively, you could try to go back via the catwalks. Guard patrols are dense, so there's a high chance of being caught. But overclocking to boost your stealth abilities could help...
C) You could TRY to use your disguise generator to pass as a guard or employee. This is going to need you to make absolutely sure you don't get too close to any of the guards or other employees.
D) You could also do something esoteric that skirts the rules of the simulation, like digitizing the intelligence in the briefcase. That would make climbing easier. But you're not sure if that would be 'cheating.'
E) Finally, you could just hack the simulation to break it. This would literally be cheating.
F) Something else, possibly? Make suggestions.

You feel tempted to just use the rafter route... it would be easy enough to scan the intelligence electronically. But you're not sure if that would actually lead to passing this assessment. Instead, you grip the suitcase tightly, and wish that you could take a deep breath to steady yourself. Alas, you don't need oxygen. After that, you begin overclocking your CPU.

You can feel fans whirr as your CPU starts working overtime to calculate out the most optimal path, while closely analyzing each and every movement of the guards and the employees. It's sort of like your awareness is expanding. With great speed, you begin navigating the catwalks with an acrobat's grace, while also staying close to blindspots so as to minimize the possibility of being seen by a security guard. You're pretty sure the overclocking may be leaving an auditory fingerprint, but you don't care. And the guards don't seem to notice.

After some quick footwork, you make it back to the starting point of the simulation. You set the briefcase down on an augmented reality checkpoint, and it vanishes into thin air. A feed appears on the AR sunglasses as they grade your performance, and you find that you've more than aced the course. As you turn to exit up into the observation area, you almost run into Samantha. She blinks at you in surprise, and shrugs, before giving you a small nod.

SAMANTHA: Just starting too? I can wait if you want to go first.

TEXN: I already finished.

She stares at you with an incredulous look on her face.

SAMANTHA: Excuse me? What are you, some kind of secret superspy or something?

TEXN: No?

SAMANTHA: I'd have noticed you working through the sim, I was up there on the observation deck!

You spread your hands.

TEXN: You were busy having an... intense discussion with Isabella.

She purses her lips, and then nods.

SAMANTHA: Well... any tips?

You consider a bit. You don't want to give the simulation away, that seems unethical. Besides, Isabella is probably listening in. You give a shrug.

TEXN: Be observant. Don't rush.

She nods slowly, and heads down into the simulation area. You leave her be, and head up into the observation area. Isabella is leaning against the wall, arms folded as she looks over a tablet. She glances at you, and smiles a bit.

ISABELLA: Excellent work, Texn. You aced the exercise... despite, per your file, not having any special skills at covert operations.

TEXN: Thank you.

ISABELLA: I must note that with that, there will be high expectations with a score like that. Was this a case of genuine skill, or a fluke?

Old urges cause you to lean towards claiming this as a sign of your superiority, which makes you hesitant to embrace them. But then again... if you admit this was a fluke, would you still keep your high score? You might lock yourself out of special equipment or training.

Isabella nods, and makes a few notes on her tablet.

ISABELLA: Very careful, thoughtful answer. Also with a hint of gaming the system in case I was going to try to strip your accomplishment due to your lack of trained skills.

ISABELLA: You have passed your covert operations skills assessment with a perfect score. I'm going to add your new certification to your employee file. But I will stress that if you aren't TRAINED in covert ops, you will need to do so.

ASSIGNMENT COMPLETE: Complete Covert Ops Assessment
TEXN HAS GAINED A CERTIFICATION!
Covert Operations (Expert): Shows that Texn is highly skilled as a covert operations specialist. Since he essentially lucked into completing this assessment, he really should get the training and skills to back it up. This will allow him easier access to said training, at least, along with specialized equipment...

ISABELLA: If at any point you feel you cannot exemplify a specialization you've been certified in, you need to surrender it. We don't accept half-assers in the Illuminati. Dismissed.

You pause, feeling hesitation.

TEXN: Do I salute?

The Illuminati agent laughs in amusement, before shaking her head and making a "shoo" motion with her hands.

ISABELLA: No, no, you're not one our soldiers. Enjoy your success.

You nod, and with that, leave for your quarters to contemplate your success. You've completed two certifications in one day with exemplary marks. That's a good thing. But you feel like this is going to increase strutiny... and you're not sure how to feel about that. Regardless, you have time until your midnight meeting with Krystal. How do you spend it?

> We have some options on how to spend our time before we meet with Krystal. We can only select two of these.
A)
Continue to try to study modery culture and how to relate to people. This will have a SMALL chance of helping our diplomacy rolls.
B) Try to find some training manuals or information on covert operations.
C) Be social, and actually reach out to Samantha to talk to her and find out how her covert ops assessment went.
D) Reach out to Agatha, you haven't spoken to her in ages.
E) Other things... anything that can't be fit into about a 5-6 hour time frame will cause us to miss our meeting with Krystal.
