I've been thinking for my target city in 95-100% totality, if it's projected to be cloudy, I should head southwest along the path to find a clearer spot, because if I head northeast, on some level I'm just getting ahead of the cloud cover, barely.

Or is it like look at radar for the region and if there are any clear spots, head towards those hoping to intersect?

if there's significant cloud cover where you are in the hours before it arrives, the interstate and major state/county roads are gonna get mega jammed

One of my coworkers is going to some eclipse festival in Texas. I guess they travel around the world to do it whenever there's a full eclipse. I told her about what it was like seeing one in 2017. Luckily my family was located in totality so I just spent some time with them. Eclipses are pretty fuckin cool. I just remember all the night bugs and the bats coming out when it got really dark. It was really a nice experience to share with my family.

Not radar: radar doesn't see clouds. Just rain.

You will want to look at the GOES satellite pics to look for areas with less cloud cover, then load up windy.com and look at the 4200m wind to see which direction the cloud-level wind is moving. Then drive to a hole that's not running away from you.

Just like Mama used to make it!
I was harsh in my last post about the Falls and I'm sorry.

We were just there on Dec 23rd and went to Brasa Brazilian Steakhouse at he Hilton with some friends. Man that place went down hill quality wise. Some of the meats were a surprising combo of too salty but also bland. The buffet was ok, but lacking since the last time we went pre-pandemic. $350 for two people that had 2 cocktails and the buffet. gently caress that.

Best time I ever had in the Falls was we got some hotel room deal at the Hilton and $25 credit at the casino. My 3rd pull of a Red White and Blue $0.25 slot machine won us $843. We had been here a total of 10 minutes but we cashed out and went back to the room as that money paid for everything and even a nice dinner out the next weekend.

I see there are more Korean places opening up down there. Are they any good?

Yeah, just gonna go to the great lakes in spring for an event where I need to see the sky. Not like it's cloudy for any given 4/5 days between November and June.

The 2017 happened when I was at work; and we all just went outside and let the phones ring. It was about 90% totality where we were. We had the glasses and we did the pinhole in paper thing. It was all of a few minutes. The neatest part was the temperature drop. For about 5 minutes the temp dropped by a good 10 degrees.

Pretty much a worst-case weather forecast for the 8th. Almost the entire path is predicted to be under clouds. Best odds right now look like Buffalo and Indianapolis; everywhere else is hosed.

Yeah, that's where I am (Burlington, not Buffalo) and I'm cautiously excited, but also NOT looking forward to the population of the state increasing by 1/4,m or possibly even a 1/3!

We're barely over 600,000 people, and the predictions are ALL over the place, but just from hotel/AirBnB bookings it's easily approaching 100,000, and then there will be a SLEW of people from southern New England and parts of NY attempting to drive up for the day.

I plan to MAYBE go to a local park on the lakefront to watch, The one closest to me is in an ALL residential area, we're not in a place tourists will generally be, HOWEVER, it's not like they can't whip out Google Maps and find this park that's a bit further from the downtown/touristy area themselves.

So if it looks like complete poo poo to drive even a couple of miles*, we'll walk to a closer park that's no on the lakefront, but has a nice hill with a clearing at the top we should be able to see the sun from.

*We have two bikes, but one is sadly pretty broken, and I'm not sure we got time this weekend to try and drive around to get it fixed/find a spare part. Otherwise we'd just bike to the park.

And this is the current weather, expected to keep doing this into Friday...the day the tourists who booked rooms are all driving/flying in:

Believe it or not, weather predictions still say likely sunny and warm (like mid 50's) Monday. The ground will be an ugly, wet, muddy piece of poo poo, but the skies should be clear.

incorrect

the difference between totality and not is literal night and day. don't be a little baby and drive to see it. there is no such thing as partial totality

So is it like the difference between almost cuming and actually cuming?

If you're in 98% totality are you just edging?

yes. the sun is really, really loving bright. even 2% visibility will still cast sunlight almost to normal levels.

It can't be stressed enough that it is indeed a DRAMATIC difference between 100% totality, and anything less. If you're close enough to get to 100%, you should make the effort if possible.
