Early on in the dollop it came out that they were heavily plagiarizing their stuff and their response was that the people they were stealing from and not crediting should be grateful for the exposure. So gently caress those guys.

I used to enjoy listening to Stuff You Should Know back in the day, but it felt like in the last couple of years they have gotten REAL lazy with their topics to the point that it feels like they're just summarizing a Wikipedia article. I realize they never went particularly in-depth before but these days half of their comments are like "I get the feeling so-and-so did this because", or "I couldn't find out what happened with the *whatever*". Seems like they're just phoning it in.

Decoding the Gurus is very good for an analysis of the techniques and rhetoric used by various guru/influencer types. The hosts are an Australian psychology professor and a Northern Irish anthropology professor who are both funny and have great chemistry. The "gurus" they tackle range from people who really are pretty bad, like Roganosphere dipshits or Huberman, to mostly respectable academics. IIRC their first episode is a masterful dissection of Bret Weinstein's sob story about being shut out of academia; as someone who has a high body count due to his Covid grifting and being boosted on Rogan, it's worth a listen.

Why you hatin' on Bill Simmons?

The Rewatchables kicks rear end and I've discovered many older movies I would have otherwise never watched or even heard of.

Fly on the wall is funny like 2% of the time. It's amazing how bad Spade and Carvy are at interviewing, but when its funny it hits me hard. I also grew up with those two on TV so that helps make it palatable.

Conspirituality podcast is pretty interesting, a group of 40-50 year old recovered yoga wellness cult bros that talk about the intersection of right wing stuff, conspiracy theories, wellness, spirituality and influencer social media culture.
Not all episodes are good and some people will really not vibe with the hosts who all sound like yoga teachers, but I've learned some things.

Polishing Turds; I found it as a recommend on SA last year. It's kind of a dorky name, but it's a great show. Their thing is getting super deep into the history of badly received music, with bands often spanning multiple episodes. It's extremely well researched and the hosts are affable and funny. It's the only podcast I need to immediately listen to whenever a new episode drops, probably in part because they only release 1 or 2 a month (both hosts have day jobs and each ep takes a lot of work so I get it) But yeah if you're into music stuff give it a go

I was listening to a Star Trek podcast but I can't handle when they just whine about episodes and nitpick dumb poo poo so I stopped listening. I had grown out of the wack rear end "objective analysis" (lol) phase of enjoying media like over 10 years ago and now just like enjoying stuff on its own terms and genuinely sometimes like bad episodes because they're interesting and engaging in a different way. The only sin you can really commit is being uninteresting, but that's not the kind of poo poo they complain about. It'll be like some "Why didn't they do THIS instead of THIS?" type poo poo and that always comes off to me as having both a lack of imagination and revealing how dull you are by trying to be discerning over useless crap.

The ones that have been tolerable to me is when it's like, some dude rambling about what kind of glue is best to use on fake grass. Just like insane expertise on some random niche subject, but I hate just listening to random rear end people babble about poo poo when they got like a C in English class in highschool and the only way they can engage with anything is by pointing out exclusively superficial poo poo.

Shouldn't this thread be in RGD?

serious answer:
Cancelled Too Soon - TV shows that got one season or less
Darknet Diaries - infosec, sometimes great, less often a bit poor
Decoding the Gurus - recently picked this up based on someone's recommendation, I'm actually not quite sure about this one, I thought it was going to be more about woo-purveyors but maybe they ran out of those
Moderated Content - trust and safety with regards to online platforms, same as above
Omnibus - pop-sci and history, but better than most I feel
Strong Songs - dissects famous songs, although sometimes too esoteric
Video Game Newsroom Time Machine - history of video games, exhaustively researched, but can be very dry
Your Kickstarter Sucks - for good or for ill, SA-style humour

Hiatus:
30 for 30 - sports, hit and miss
Art of the Score - movie scores
