Yeah the internets dead and social media has killed it, etc and so forth - but what if! What if there are still some decent websites kicking about that have not been entirely captured by the social media machine? This thread is for sharing websites off the beaten track, special interest, niche things, pointless endeavors, fool's errands or just whatever floats your goat.

I'll start with some here I have, will post more if people like the thread, my bookmarks are ridiculously unorganised:

https://rave.dj/ - This website makes cool mashups from YouTube links you feed it

https://neocities.org/ - A cool Geocities revival project for tiny niche sites and whatnot!

https://aeon.co/ - High quality online magazine focusing on "philosophy, science, psychology, society and culture"

https://psyche.co/ - Like above but with more of a psychology, history and anthropology focus

https://stilltasty.com/ - Useful website for looking up how long specific food keeps

https://366weirdmovies.com/ - A celebration of weird, obscure and cult movies!

https://lparchive.org/ - Probably most people here already knows about this but I had forgotten about it until today, it's the Let's Play Archive!

https://3quarksdaily.com/ - High quality blog on "science, design, literature, current affairs, art, politics, philosophy" and more

https://www.cathar.info/ - Interesting in-depth website about the syncretic 11th century religious movement the Cathars of Southern France

https://www.themarginalian.org/ - Pop philosophy type beard stroking type articles

https://ground.news/ - A news aggregator that shows the proportional coverage of issues by left and right wing outlets

https://www.openculture.com/ - Endless free educational and cultural material

https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/ - British PC gaming website, good source of indie game news

https://thelastpsychiatrist.com/ - Idiosyncratic musings on psychiatry

https://diggersanddreamers.org.uk/ - Directory for intentional communities in the UK

http://www.somethingawful.com - Something Awful is a long-standing and often irreverent website that's a bit like a digital playground for humor, internet culture, and general weirdness. It features a mix of articles, forums, and user-generated content that can be both hilarious and offbeat. The site has a unique blend of satire, memes, and inside jokes that have influenced internet culture over the years. It's definitely not for everyone due to its sometimes edgy or off-color humor, but if you enjoy internet subcultures and enjoy poking fun at the absurdities of life online, you might find it a fascinating place to explore.

Because it never leaves its bedroom, no one has ever seen this poster's real face.
https://www.atlasobscura.com - you've probably heard of their coffee table book. just a big, constantly growing collection of interesting and unique locations from around the world. not clickbaity, they seem to actually do their research and even occasionally debunk persistent myths, as with the story of central park's lost dinosaur museum. they also have weekly puzzles, and sometimes it's just a mostly themed crossword puzzle, but other times they're stuff like logic puzzles about a place in brazil with 5 official languages or this obscure grid thingy from a japanese puzzle magazine

https://1900hotdog.com - the last daily destination comedy website in the world. new home of seanbaby and robert brockway for the last few years, and occasional safe harbor for refugees from sites like cracked and fanbyte that were developing cool teams of regular contributors before being bought over by business monsters and gutted. a lot of it is paywalled, which sucks, but is also kind of just a reality of the advertising apocalypse. maybe check out these free articles and see if it's for you: 101 hamburger jokes, twisted metal 2 endings, captain america vs the bullshit robot

https://news.ycombinator.com - might be kind of... specific, compared to the others here, but it's also an old web site that I like to check in on when I'm bored just like the old days. it's just people posting links to interesting poo poo on other websites, but it's people who are still interested in doing that, rather than like selling you things or converting you politically

http://wiby.me is absolutely amazing. it's a search engine that only indexes web 1.0 sites. like, meaning ones that use strictly pre-html5 html, I think. I have thought about making a thread just for wiby and posting cool things you find through wiby

and this isn't a recommendation exactly but god I miss io9
I mean, it still exists, but it's mostly just relentless pathetic shilling for comicbook bullshit. I don't even know how to describe what it used to be. the nerd jerkoffery was always there to get clicks, but it was also a curated hub of just interesting poo poo
"The remarkable story of a Russian family cut off from all human contact for 40 years"
"Tilt-shift effect photos of the universe make the vast cosmos look tiny"
"Why do birds fly in a V formation?"
they introduced me to so many cool little things. a digital version of an atlas from the 1930's, michaelangelo's grocery list, the art of uno moralez, they'd share random cool animated shorts and concept art that you'd otherwise probably never hear of, and write gushing articles about the increasing viability of spider silk in manufacturing. I miss them!
now the entire website is just 5000 articles a day like "top 19 avengers that were at the comic con star trek star wars" and it breaks my loving heart.
if there's anything like what io9 was 10-12 years ago, I am all ears

Gonna second this one, if you like reading well-written articles about dumb stuff this is full of great material. I'd argue the paid stuff is worth the money, but there's still a ton of free content on there, with a free article a week and a ton of older articles eventually getting moved to free as well.
