I have a few friends who are paralyzed and recently the assisted living home got a demonstration model of this robot:

What is obi?

quote:

Obi is a revolutionary adaptive eating device for individuals with upper extremity strength and mobility limitations.

Through the use of customizable accessibility switches, Obi allows its users to be in control of what they eat and when.

Obi increases independence, social interaction, meal enjoyment, and well being.

The one my friend got to try has a remote that goes near his hand (he has a little finger movement in one hand) and he can push a button that tells the robot what bowl to feed him from and when he wants a bite.

He was loving stoked about it, and I figured you guys would think it was cool too so I made this post.

Here's the website that has a bunch of info: https://meetobi.com/

Here's a video of it in action:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZWCH3hI6M0

Cool.

*edit* Here's some iteration pics of the device:

And here I am using my hands and utensils like a sucker. $4500 seems like a good investment, since my scooping time costs me munney.

With a writeoff it costs nothing!

Black Gold!

Was thinking to shitpost, but that is genuinely interesting, OP.

My dad had several strokes in his life and something like this would have helped him eat well since he had trouble with his hands. I know it was something that embarrassed him as he aged and I just wanted him to feel like his old self and not ashamed.

Same. My buddy has to be fed and he loving hates it.

I wonder if they could add a camera with some facial recognition to direct the spoon to wherever their mouth is. Right now it looks like you set it up for just getting close and having it continuously go to the exact same spot in the air.

Yeah I'm worried if what exactly it can dump scoops into?

Could you put gravel in one cup, aluminum shavings into another, caulk and the last cup has sawdust which the spoon turns around and pats into place?
