Up until 2023 this was true but leadership actually gets elected by the membership now, which in the like 1.5 years since the old guard got ousted has already dramatically changed the way the union functions and their ideological makeup. There is no socialist or communist caucus like there was in the 30s - 52ish period. But conditions do allow for such caucuses to develop within the org. Very cool .

I live in downtown New Haven and took a walk through Yale to check on the encampment. Beinecke plaza, which is where the 47 arrests happened last Monday, is completely deserted. There was a police vehicle parked at each corner, maybe a dozen officers total in view (forget if they were YPD or NHPD). Entrances blocked by yellow tape or barricades. It looks like the encampment has settled in front of the main library a block away. At the time it seemed to be in a lull. There were enough tents for hundreds of people, but most were collapsed and there were just a couple dozen students hanging out, likely there to ensure things aren't torn down. I did not see any clear sign of a police presence, but there were a couple obvious plainclothes/undercover police monitoring things from the library steps. This was in contrast to a raging house party I passed by two blocks to the south. Students were falling out the windows (at 11am). Not a single LEO in sight. I plan on visiting again in the afternoon, hopefully things aren't so depressing then.

This will be a test for the movement. When the universities offer minor concessions, will the protesters think "job well done, let's stop now" or keep going? Because these protests should not and must not end until Israel's genocide ends.
