New Coke was perfectly fine. It was doing great, until the South decided to freak out about it. It still kept doing well in the rest of the US for some time. Yes, it started off as very localized, so unless you think US Southerners have different tastebuds than other people, it was about the raw fact of change in this "American staple" and not about taste. Everything else snowballed out of that reaction. The story got a huge amount of attention, people heard it was bad, taste is pretty subjective, and international sellers got spooked. Its failure isn't an example of corporate hubris, it's an early example of just how powerful the "Change is un-American!" sentiment can become, and what will happen if fringe yahoos get a platform for their side of an argument that frames things as if both sides are equally valid and deserve the same level of exposure.

I've always wondered...why does coke make both diet coke and coke zero? I mean, aren't they the same thing? A zero calorie product that tastes like coke? I don't drink soda so I've never tasted any of these drinks so this may be a very dumb question tia

Diet coke was an early attempt at diet soda so it had a distinctive taste that some people have grown to like, but not that close to coke. So they have made other attempts at something zero calorie that could pass for coke.
