A friend got the new LOTR sets before me and I went over checking them out.

Gandalf Arrives : Must buy, it has Gandalf and the frodo printing is nice. The horse is cool, and misc parts that are all neat. The smallest sets yet captures the scene from the movie in its size.

Shelob Attacks : hands down one of the best lego spiders ever. repetitive build due to spiders having 8 terrifying and gross legs. You get Frodo (even though the printing should be reused from Gandalf Arrives for this scene), Sam and Gollum. 3 One rings, which are a really neat part that will open the way for some more snot fun if it is easier to get later on.

Uruk-hai Army : Great booster back for getting Uruks. The figures, armor and new weapons and shield pieces are great. The attack ballista is ok, the wood 1x4 plates are printed and I love them. The Rohan Soldier is again well printed, as well with Eomer. The wall attaches to helms deep and the parts are great for castle mocs. lots of grey, I love it.

Orc Forge : I didn't really like this set, its another army booster with lots of great minifigs with excellent printing. The structure is great and overall it is really well done. The problem is I just didn't like it. It has many great points but it felt like it had no soul for me. The best part is getting the Uruk out of the ground.

Weathertop: My favorite set, the set as a whole is nice and splits open giving you a inside lots of playspace without it actually being a playset. All of the characters are well done and the nazgul horses have red eyes :) price per part this set is the worst in the series but it is very well done and worth it even at retail. It had the soul I was looking for in these sets.

Mines of Moria: I am really torn on this set, I loved it despite its flaws and it had a lot of good points. The worst, huge sticker sheet, I understand printings are expensive but it was over 30 stickers. far from acceptable. Now the good, the cave troll is great and as are all the characters. I can see using the goblin faces for decaying zombie faces. This is another playset and it isn't bad. you have the tomb and well both function for what they are and the build is nice and sturdy, you have the doors that again done well and even have a way to brace them with a minifig weapon. The other wall has treasure! The pillars have buttons to knock down with at the back and it is neat. I can see kids living it for having a big troll smashing through doors and knocking stuff down. Boromir , Legolas and Gimli what more can a girl as for to be trapped in a tomb with.

Helms Deep: The big one and it is fairly large. The castle wall is built great and so many decent parts on this build. Then you have the characters I have no complaints with the minifigs in this series. You attach the rohan wall to it and it gets bigger. It just seems well planned out and is a great build and a even better source for castle parts. My complaints is the inner wall, its all panels after we have the nice brickwalls but I guess it had to do with costs. The horn really seems unfinished as well.

Overall, I think lego did a good job catering to its market with these sets. I will be buying them all minus the orc forge. That will have to be discounted for me to consider it.

All the minifigures are great, the printings on the body's and legs are well, weapons and armor that got prints also well done. If lego plays there cars right this can be a very successful theme but I really want more like weathertop.

What a day! My family got 20 in eastbourne, 30 in seaford, 6 in lewis, and 45 in bexhill, but we payed for all the papers at 50p each, £50.50 altogether. but we only kept two (for me and my little brother.) the other 99 was sold on ebay for about £4.50. Anyway it is a brilliant set, but when you push the mask down on batman`s head it shows his eyebrows, so the old batman is better (in my opinion anyway.).

So despite this being exactly what I suggested doing back on page 285, seeing some actually do it and brag about it on a forum pisses me off. That said, if there are any UK goons morally bankrupt enough to go along with this, I am willing to buy up to 100 sets of either todays black ninjago car or saturdays white ninja set @ 1 pound each.

So I went to get the Ninjago car today and I realised how insane this promotion has made people.

There was a guy in from of me in the queue who, when he got to the cashier, wordlessly exchanged a knowing nod with the assistant. The assistant dug a Ninjago car from a box and then produced the Batman jetski from Saturday from under the till and gave it to him without comment.

I'm sure they just know each other and arranged this previously, but I would like to imagine that there is some sort of bizarre black market going on.

When it was my turn, since I was getting two, I did the whole "Terribly sorry for being such a pathetic loser that I am here at 8.30 getting free children's toys" thing. The assistant, however, said I wasn't weird at all since he's already totally jaded with all the nutcases that were in before me. I had a chat with him and apparently there were people queuing up outside at 6am before it opened and went away with bags full of the darn things.

I guess I am as crazy as those people for being annoyed since the sets are free, but it just irks me that these guys are clearly selling them all on eBay and some kids might be missing out. Oh well.

Anyway, if you happened to miss the set today, I'd be happy to send my spare to anyone that wants it. If I manage to get the other sets I will probably try to get spares of those too.

Pertty cool.

I was running errands yesterday and decided stop by the Lego store in the area to raid the PAB wall. It's funny, every time I start with some elaborate, grandiose, tetris inspired packing plan until about the 15th plastic, colored, stud induced sensory overloaded pass and I just begin shoveling 1x1s until the cup is full. It was fun helping the little ones that couldn't reach the top shelves though. I'll try to post some pics of the haul when I decide to unpack it either tomorrow or Thurs.

So Meijer has the Mines of Moria set. I want to pull the trigger on it, but I have two problems. One my son wants them too and I just want the Minifigures. This is an issue between the two of us. Also, I want to wait until they go on sale or price drop because price per piece is a bit unbalanced I feel. Amazon has all sets finally and of course under-cut all the "got to have it now" prices of the other sellers mark-ups. I know they go down in price now and again. I haven't full dived into Gravy Jones's BrickBadger site yet but is there an option to set it up to send me emails if certain sets go down in price?

Not true, there is 3 more sets coming out this year, a small tractor, a fairly large helicopter, and a remote controlled truck that is going to be this years flagship.

The technic blog that lego hosts even mentioned being excited for the new sets they have for 2013. They just don't release 40 sets a year like star wars or ninjago, we are only getting 9 new sets this year and it was split across the january release, one in march, and the last 3 in august/september.

The thing with technic sets is it is hard to put a large number of them out and they don't do as well in the north american market as the european market. It is hard to find a decent selection of them in store in canada as only toysrus stocks them regularly and even so I haven't seen the logging truck which was released 2 months ago in a store yet.

That technic land rover is a great model, but I can imagine lego would put it through loads of revisions if it were to be chosen as an official model. The chassis looks extremely parts intensive and we all know Lego can be a bit on the stingy side when it comes to spending plastic. But if they could get it to $150ish I think it would be a desirable set.

Also Lego employees must have the patience of saints. Every time I go on Cuusoo I want to flame somebody. The starwars dark bucket is at 8683 votes and that just makes me want to cry.

Not yet, and probably not for a while. I'd need to upgrade to hosting I can't really afford to even think about doing this. Although there maybe alternatives and when I get to a point when I'm happy with the site I'll spend a little time investigating them.

There are other Amazon alert based sites, but I've never used them and I'm not sure how often they update and how likely they are to notify you in time to grab short-term bargains. On BB your best bet is to bookmark the Lord of the Rings theme page and just check it whenever you log in. I wouldn't expect any major discounts for a while though.

The scale of camelcamelcamel is pretty incredible. I think it's goon made as well. I remember some posts in SH/SC about it when it was starting (Edit: indeed it is. It doesn't check prices as often as BrickBadger (in the US at any rate), but it's checking several million prices so that's not really suprising. For tracking specific sets camelcamelcamel it's probably anyone's best bet. I think BB picks up a few bargains that can fall through the cracks on less focused sites, when the discount doesn't last long, usually because it goes out of stock.

One thing I like about camelcamelcamel is that like bb they use the Amazon API the same way Brickbadger does so they have similar limitations with regards to data (no shipping costs being the main example).

I use BrickBadger (and I say I use it because I pretty much wrote it for myself initially) differently though. More for finding suprise bargains than keeping and eye on specific sets. I used to use it in conjunction with Brickset, but now pretty much use Badger exclusively. I do want to keep adding to the functionality though, it's been a nice waste of time!

Edit: Some of the stuff I'd like to do would almost certainly require a dedicated server and even with cloud hosting it's something I can't afford for a pet project. I'm currently on a year's free Amazon Cloud hosting, when that year is up it may mean the end, hopefully I'll figure out a way to avoid that though.

That's pretty clever to take advantage of the fact that the store clerk isn't going to be able to tell it's the wrong LEGO set when they ring it up. Like just switch Police Station for Police Car or something. And the sets are surprisingly expensive so a 50% discount would probably not be noticed.

The less clever part is that you are screwing up their inventory pretty badly, and that's the kind of thing that will get noticed by a competent store. "Why did we get 5 more of these sets if we already have 10 on display?"

The wording isn't clear whether he bought the two sets for $170 or if he bought two sets at a $170 discount; the latter seems more feasible to me.
