"Tiny Trains"

How I do it is I take my filthy already mostly weathered car and slap some water-slide decals on top, horribly fumbling and ruining some in the process. Then I notice the edges are quite visible and soak it in solvent and attack the edges with q-tips pushing the whole decal into the details, sometimes cutting it with a blade to get around ribs. Then if it's not totally terrible I spray the whole thing with some sort of dull-coat and do a bit more weathering.

How you're SUPPOSED to do it if you want good results:
Paint the whole train with "future" furniture polish, wait for it to totally dry.
Put the extremely well cut decal on, sometimes with a little bit of fresh future just under the decal area, not totally dry but still tacky.
Use some sort of decal solvent to help get the decal a little soft and mushy and really mash it into the detail of what ever you're putting it on.
Wait for that to dry. The future should sort of suck the decal down and help hide the edges.
Then spay with some sort of dull-coat.

Another option is to just draw with pencil crayons, which are a great way to get lovely tags vs awesome graffiti mural things. I've started doing this with mixed results.

Yes, this box-car is decorated for the popular minecraft mod distribution system known as Technic Platform by very own goon Kakermix, art by Olloth, technical assistance by Cheapshot.

You can also print your own decals on over-priced decal paper. This was my first custom decal, an adorable minecraft creeper. This was before I figured out to set my printer to secret higher quality settings.

This was my next attempt at pencil-crayon graffiti.

Fingat for scale
I wasn't happy with some of it so did my best to "erase" it (pencil crayon is a surprisingly permanent substance!) and added some water-slide decals to mix it up a bit.

This is a brand new unweathered train. It's extremely high quality but looks almost CG it's paint is so crisp, it also looks very plastic.

Here it is next to my 2 other more "finished" trains. They have both been lightly weathered so they look like they've existed for more than a few hours outside.

And here is a tiny adorable steam engine that I did not paint or work on in any way, it's not even mine it was just visiting my city.

It's super tiny, smaller than a thumb.

Hello scale model goons,

I just bought my first (well, first in the last... 15 years?) model kit, the Revell A-10 Warthog (1:44). Also picked up the touch-n-flow kit and an x-acto knife, because I usually just blindly follow directions in posts. However, I got pretty lost when I started shopping for paints. My local craft store stocks Testors, and another brand that I think is just a Testor's sub-brand.

Anyway, I was able to find "Aluminum", but then couldn't find anything called "dark grey." No "Chrome," but I did find "Auto Chrome". Same deal for pretty much every color listed on the side of the box. How do I, as a person who's totally new to this, figure out which colors I actually need?

Relatedly, is there a difference I care about between enamel and acrylic? Annoyingly, acrylics seemed to be in greater supply, but only in bottles twice as large for twice the price.

Manufacturers tend to give color listings for their own brands of paint. Honestly you can just take the instructions with you and eyeball the appropriate colors from another brand, or mix your own if factory colors aren't doing it for you.

Lacquer paint dries almost instantly and is durable but is very noxious (spray outside or in a vented fume hood). Acrylic is water-based and easy to clean up, nor is it very toxic (can spray in a well ventilated room) but can take weeks to fully cure and even then is somewhat delicate. Enamel is the compromise between the two extremes that most people settle on. I'd suggest using whatever's easier to get in your area.

It's a section of what is to hopefully be a much larger layout once I get my own place. I don't know what space I'll have to work with but I'll grow from this layout. It's sort of a seed I'll plant in my new place one day. It's got the end of a tram loop and a hidden under-city return loop for the choochoo. So I can grow the railway and tram from there. I've got a bunch of plans based on typical bedroom sizes but I'll not know till we actually buy a condo...

Made a few more builds since I last posted, hope yalls don't mind some automobiles.

This is a Ferrari 360 Modena I finished back in January. Went together well, though I did gently caress up the front bumper trying to do a wash on the panel lines, prompting a spray over that stands out slightly. Other than that, I'm satisfied with the build:

Next is one I just finished last week, a Mercedes-McLaren SLR 722. I've always really dug the matte black look on sportscars, so I decided to give it a go. I personally think it suits this car fantastically.

Little bit of a gap here since the hood didn't close all the way from previous takes, but I think it sums up the profile of the car well

Does anyone know where I can get better decals for the Revell F/A-18c?

This Kit

Canada has only ever flown the A model.

While I'm at it how about for Revell's 1/144 F-15E and F-16C models?

That's actually the opposite I was looking for, but now I want a CC-177 being escorted by 4 CF-188s in 1/144 hanging from my ceiling.

Also before I get too agnsty over whether the variety of plane is correct, I should see if the differences are easily correctable. Because if it's just a different engine cooler vent, or something, I don't really care.

It's a really nice kit in fit and detail, but there are three weird issues; the rear cockpit bit doesn't fit at all, the gear legs just don't fit in the holes unless you cut off a flange bit, and there's nothing to actually hold the folded wings up like that; I had to superglue them, and one actually just came off after I took the pictures. Everything else is great though.

And it's a 'porthole' for a camera, I think they did a bit of photo-reconnaissance with it. No camera in the kit, though, so don't look too close.

So... does anyone know of any 1:72-ish drone kits that aren't Italieri? I like the idea of having a Predator or Reaper to stick on the table for Force on Force when relevant but the Italieri kits are more than twice the price of a normal 1:72 plane and kind of hard to find around here.

I know for sure Platz has them in 1/72 (also the X-47B) but they are expensive too. I've seen at least one other manufacturer (also expensive) but don't remember which one.

Glue then paint unless there are some detail areas that will be inaccessible after gluing, in which case glue major subassemblies and then paint.

Glue everything easily accessible, then paint. You don't want to paint a plane cockpit that's already glued in.

Jonny Nox

Yeah my workflow seems to be

Paint inside of fuselage if needed
Assemble then paint/decal cockpit
assemble boddy sans landing gear, landing gear doors, antenae, missiles, etc
tape cockpit and paint
paint missiles/etc on sprue
final construction
future (sometimes)
decals
(Future, oil washes, weathering whatever)
Satin or flat coat if needed.

Actually, missiles always go on as absolute last thing

edit: Remember that future really likes to have a day to cure before it stops reacting to thinners

It's actually the Platz kit in a Italeri boxing so get it if you can, though their decals have less variety.

Or do you mean paint anything easily accessible then glue? Sticking the brush into the cockpit hole is kind of a bitch.

No, but I guess I wasn't clear enough. I meant glue the cockpit parts etc., paint everything, glue it into place so you don't have to reach into inconvenient places with a brush (wait that came out wrong).

Thanks - the wings come separated or together (there's actually two completely different sets of wing parts), but as I said above, there's nothing to attach the two folded halves of the wing together except glueing them along the edge, which is fragile at best. I probably should have drilled holes in the ends and made a little 'hinge' bit from wire or something to strengthen it, but I wanted to get it finished.

What do people use for filler? I use Vallejo's filler (basically acrylic medium and marble dust) which is awesome for filling gaps and seam (spread on, wipe off with water, bob=your uncle) but doesn't take well to sanding.

I am trying to avoid organic solvents though which means most one part fillers are no good. Is there one I missed? Or does Tamiya Grey not stink like the squadron stuff used to?
