This is where guys like Beck, or Todd Schnitt came from. Stern himself spent the better part of 20 years doing homocop bits, and even campaigned for governor of New York for like 2 weeks talking up the death penalty. God, that was a loving embarrassment. Literally the reason why they were going after the record industry was that the democrat christians fell for the right wing crazy line of bullshit about a conspiracy of secret Satanists in the recording industry. I'm not making that up. People like Tipper Gore were going after the record industry because they seriously thought Satanists were trying to influence children, as part of the whole "Satanic panic" of the 80s-90s. What's even more an embarrassment was that as a result, normally liberal type people showed perhaps their 'true colors' as they got driven towards 'political incorrectness' and right-wing bully type of humor. It was a nasty, mean, vile time when the 'rebels against mainstream society' were racist sexist homophobic assholes. Where the rebellion against the status quo meant to drive towards lovely right wing ish politics. The 'legacy' of that time is that to this day there are loving assholes who confuse being racist sexist homophobic assholes with humor or being 'edgy/pushing the envelope.' But who totally forget the 'humor' and 'wit' part in their asinine bullying of weaker groups. Anyway, it should come as no surprise that several comedy figures that we thought as kids growing up were rebels against the status quo are now regularly featured on poo poo like Fox news. ^^^ Right wing media has been single handily responsible for the success of so many careers in the music industry, just for giving massive amounts of free publicity to the very people they criticize. Remember when Marilyn Manson released AntiChrist Superstar in 1996? The loving media back then literally made him out to be just as dangerous as Osama Bin Laden was post 9/11. It's ironically loving hilarious what these people on the right in the media do to themselves.

This past week I was put through a unique form of torture. I went on a 4 hour road trip with my wife's father and aunt. My aunt spent the entire time reading headlines from Drudge and the Blaze off her phone, while my father-in-law had conservative talk radio playing at medium-low volume underneath. I *can* discuss politics with my family just fine. It just doesn't *get* anywhere, so I usually don't bother. Half my family agrees with me already and the other half is so stunningly sheltered/privileged that they will never, ever understand, so there's not much point. Maybe if they spent a few years NOT watching Fox News or listening to talk radio first. My favorite example was trying to explain why the proposed Arizona laws were unconstitutional and getting "That's crazy, the law doesn't say that, if it said that it would be unconstitutional!" Yes exactly. They aren't going to listen to me, I'm just their brother, if I'm right and Limbaugh's wrong they wasted all that time in the car.

Actual exchange of ideas is neat and worthwhile, particularly if it's with people you're close to. But a lot of social engagement is people looking for reinforcement or validation of their opinion, and expressing frustration when they don't get it. With politics, the latter can be a pretty predictable outcome with some people, and if you want to spend quality time with them it's easier to avoid the subject.

I used to think it was a silly rule to not discuss politics at Thanksgiving or Christmas. Back then, 3 of my cousins close to my age, a couple of aunts, my father and I would argue in circles with the rest of the family for an hour or 2 as liberal vs conservative, until my extremely conservative grandfather (Reagan and Bush I autographed photos on mantle) would get mad and threaten to throw us out of his house. But then Loose Change happened and suddenly my father and I were the only sane people left in the room. I now agree politics should not be discussed when I'm trying to gorge myself with family.

Doctor Butts posted:The shitheaded family member brings up some politically charged talking point they want to whine about This right here is the core of the problem. The only mode of political engagement a lot of people encounter is a heavily emotion-driven group validation, where folks are listening to or saying expressions of ideas to make them feel good rather than anything to do with the content of that idea. If everyone's a member of the group already or is ambivalent, there's no friction there. If somebody's got a strong identification with the other group, both sides get frustrated. A response of "Actually, I think he's doing a fine job" to a throwaway complaint about the President is emotionally rebuffing the complainer, even as it feels like responding to an attack. And given the poverty of our political discourse, both comments are more likely to phrased as barbed zingers than something more inviting to discussion. People who get off on conflict might like that, but I'd rather shift the conversation to TV shows or the weather or whatever. eviltastic fucked around with this message at 19:16 on Jul 9, 2013 |
