One note about seeing people bitch about the ACA and marketplaces, and how their costs haven't significantly gone down, is that if you play with the exchange variables enough from the minimal info they spout about what its costing them, you can essentially figure out what range of income they are in for their household. I don't get envy, but it annoys me that people making 6 figures bitch that they have to pay $500 a month for a family of four. They have no idea that this poo poo isn't for them and want to know why.

I thought there was at least a possibility that gun homicides might be more even-handed, gender-wise, but nope. Consulting the FBI's 2010 supplementary homicide reports, the victims of all intimate or former intimate partner murders were 80% female (1061 vs 264), while for murders with firearms specifically it was 84% female (602 vs 114).

I argued with someone today who said "Democrats just shut down the parks to make the shutdown more painful, they didn't have to!" I told them that, yes, they did, parks are not essential to running the country and there's no funding for them. They then went on to say that the Federal Government is useless anyway and they don't get anything from them.

They saw no irony in any of that.

I just got laid off, so my wife was looking at what rates would be through the exchanges, when she put in our income it came out as some absurd percentage of the poverty level. $500 a month for health insurance seems pretty reasonable.

Maybe the Democrats should demand single payer healthcare, 100% legal abortion, gay marriage, a 90% tax rate on all income over 10million etc.

Then the two sides can find a middle ground, keep Obamacare in exchange for not doing single payer.

Can someone clarify something on the ACA for me? People are talking about how insurance companies have sent them letters saying thier premiums are rising by ridiculous amounts. Obviously prior to the first, this was essentially a scare tactic. With the employer mandate pushed back a year, I tend to believe this is still a scare tactic, since employer rates haven't been established yet. Is there better info I can point to that these letters are horseshit? I've told people to shop for individual plans to see that they can probably get even better care cheaper than they currently have, but I'd like more solid info on the employer side of it.

I'd say that they have zero intention of actually having a discussion and are just trying to bait you into making mistakes that they can criticize. But my brain basically stopped giving them the benefit of the doubt when they asked 'what's the tea party?' :downs: And then immediately qualifies your response by saying that the media uses the term to make republicans seem extreme.

Also asking what the dems compromised on is, bluntly put, a bullshit question, the actual compromising happened when bills were being passed. The idea that a party should be able to fish for political handouts in order not to crash the government/economy over legislature they've already agreed to should be inconceivable. But clearly it is a good idea, lest you're party be disrespected.

It seems you found your footing later on, but letting him get those cheap shots in might have disrupted your otherwise coherent point. (By my reading he didn't have any intention of arguing in good faith, you did and for that he punished you. Its pretty lovely. But maybe someone else has a better reading of it?)

The ACA was debated and passed by the House and the Senate. It was signed into law by the President and upheld by the Supreme Court. Their are ways of repealing a law that don't involve hold a gun to the head of the country. The Democrats are not culpable in the shut down.

"You tell me where the Dumbocrats have EVER compromised also don't you hate the compromise they made in delaying the law for big business????"

And the time for compromise was in February, you know, when they had the meetings to compromise and hammer out the details on the budget, the budget that the Republicans agreed to until they thought they had proper leverage.
And the time for compromise on Obamacare was 4 god drat years ago, you know, when Obama dropped the Public Option and made compromises with the GOP and shored up what is in the bill before changing their mind and not voting for it anyway.
Finally you know what? It has been four god drat years, if you STILL don't know what's in Obamacare, if you STILL can't point to any single thing in the bill because YOU HAVEN'T TAKEN THE TIME TO READ IT it is squarely on your lazy/illiterate shoulders.

So I've already eviscerated this guy after this post, but this popped up in the middle of a rational discussion we were having. He started spouting some Tea Party rhetoric, but was really open to discussion. Then some troll comes on about Obama being muslim, and I made the mistake of answering "what would be wrong if he was?"

quote:

Read the Koran and decide for yourself if you wish....it has enough hatred implanted against Jews, Christians and infidels in general to validate what the liberal media calls radicals or jihadists...in truth, the Koran calls for these actions and responses to those that do not submit to Islam...infidels must be converted,or taxed,or killed. Luckily,99.9999% do not follow the teachings of their own holy book. Of world violence, check the percentage due to followers of Islam. Instead of measuring their acceptability due to rational motives and decency...read their book and decide for yourself...either that or just look at the violent history of the spread of Islam. I tried to be brief...but Islam is a religion of conquest using the methods I noted, but dying for the cause makes one a martyr with a great reward of virgins awaiting in heaven....Jews are the most hated because they did not recognize Mohammed as a prophet.....the language against Jews is horrifyinf at best. Christians are next in line for the same sin and for proclaiming Jesus as the son of God. All the remainder are infidels...how sweet is that??? It takes about an hour or two to read the entire book or read summaries of the Saras...it is plainly presented. And other writers have done credible jobs of describing Islam, like Harris...however, the best are written by women who have left Islam...where Sharia Law delegates them to a low status of mere objects....a woman raped in Islam requires three witnesses, all men, to validate the accusation in court....much more...back to vacation.Oh...just too get you excited, Mohammed s favorite wife was a young girl, under 14, could be 12,don't exactly remember......that's called rape in America.
