Dear Mr. Mark Karpeles,
We are your investors. We are writing you this letter to inform you that we forgive you for the unfortunate demise of Mt Gox and we do not want to see you go to jail. We are also writing you to inform you that we have a proposal to save Mt. Gox and provide the Bitcoin community with what it truly needs: an exchange that has the trust of the entire community. This can be accomplished through a voluntary reorganization of Mt. Gox resulting in your depositors being granted shares in the new exchange.

The ideas behind Bitcoin are bigger than our personal stake and the numbers in our accounts. These ideas are bigger than the 750,000 Bitcoins that may or may not have been stolen from Mt. Gox and are bigger than Mt. Gox itself. The world is watching Bitcoin right now and waiting to see how we handle this. There are those who would love to see us panic and devolve into an angry mob stricken with personal greed and out get every last coin possible. But we are better than that. We know you are, too. This is why we are taking the first step and forgiving you for the mistakes that resulted in the current losses we all face, provided you agree to do what is necessary to make us whole. At present, the first step is to discuss the voluntary reorganization of Mt. Gox taking us on as shareholders. We are putting the idea of Bitcoin ahead of our personal stake because we believe in it, do not want to harm it, and believe that cooperation represents the best method for recouping our losses. We know you agree.

We have a long term vision of Bitcoin, as we believe you do as well. We are open to many suggestions as to how to resolve this, but at this point we believe the following points embody our best options: (1) shareholders should be offered a stake in the new company on a pro rata basis based on their holdings in Mt. Gox (we can come up with a formula for valuing Bitcoin denominated holdings later); (2) those who wish to leave should be offered a haircut. There are many details to be worked out, but this is the essence of the plan. It is a plan that will benefit your depositors, benefit yourself, benefit Bitcoin and benefit other virtual currencies. Most importantly, it will show the world we can regulate ourselves in the face of great adversity. Our ability to self-govern in this time of crisis will serve as a model for other governments and organizations the world over.

We welcome an open discussion about the possibilities for resolving this in a manner that benefits the Bitcoin community and movement as a whole, and balances those interests with our right to compensation while recognizing that you are human. Please restore our faith in yourself and in Mt. Gox by accepting this invitation to discuss our situation.

On Behalf of any Mt. Gox Depositors in Agreement,

Daniel J. Kelman, Esq.

it's possible, but bitcoiners would never go for it. occasionally someone will pop up on reddit or bitcointalk and start a thread along the lines of "hey, i have an idea; let's blacklist the bitcoins the fbi took from silk road so they'll be worthless!" and then gets immediately dogpiled by bitcoiners telling him to gently caress off. they say, "if we start blacklisting bitcoins, where does it end? there's a non-zero chance of someone taking a severe loss by accepting bitcoins they didn't know were blacklisted." frankly, that response is one of the least insane things i've seen bitcoiners say

Dear MtGox Customers,

As there is a lot of speculation regarding MtGox and its future, I would like to use this opportunity to reassure everyone that I am still in Japan, and working very hard with the support of different parties to find a solution to our recent issues.

Furthermore I would like to kindly ask that people refrain from asking questions to our staff: they have been instructed not to give any response or information. Please visit this page for further announcements and updates.

Sincerely,
Mark Karpeles

Dear MtGox Customers,

In light of recent news reports and the potential repercussions on MtGox's operations and the market, a decision was taken to close all transactions for the time being in order to protect the site and our users. We will be closely monitoring the situation and will react accordingly.

Best regards,

Other factors to consider in moving forward. Also exchange ideas to create interest and obtain depositers and traders.

3. Obtaining more information from Mark on coin situations. Find out if coins are infact gone and stolen or frozen and seized due to gov. If the latter, figure out if its possible to go ahead with the new exchange to free up the coins this way.

4. Break up control and ownership of exchange. Need more discussion on where mark fits here.

5. locate exchange to a finanically friendly location (outside of control of. Cook Islands) IS Japan not a financially friendly location?

6. have all transcations accounts as public as possible.

7. all bitcoin should be very easily accessible and controlled by users

8. introduce type of digital share in the exchange

9. have bitcoin generate interest, obtain this largely from the trading fee and have near 95% of all fees feed back in to the exchange

surprise, surprise. bitcoiners have so little understanding of government that they think yellen's statement that the fed can't regulate bitcoins means that the entire us government can't regulate bitcoins. they're making lots of :smuggo: at manchin

[–]folhowk 100 points 5 hours ago

Well Manchin must feel like an idiot.

[–]midoridrops 20 points 5 hours ago

I bet he doesn't care. He's still probably thumping his chest, like a doofus.

[–]bitsprint 3 points 1 hour ago

It's not a matter of authority; neither the Fed nor Banks nor Fincen have the ability to ban bitcoin. Yellen said that "there's no intersection at all, in any way, between Bitcoin and banks that the Federal Reserve has the ability to supervise and regulate."

[–]Benjamminmiller 4 points 1 hour ago*

Regulation of other currencies is not the duty of the Fed and at less than a tenth of the value of their monthly bond purchases I couldn't possibly see the Fed caring to make it their business.

When a Fed president, chair, governor says "that's not our duty" they're not saying "go legislate me more work". This is not a case of Yellen making a political grab at more responsibility, this is Yellen politely telling Manchin he has no clue what he's talking about.

I find your social commentary comically ironic in the face of your understanding of the Fed.

[–]throwawyacct 42 points 5 hours ago

She is, of course, correct. It really warms my heart that she said this publicly.

[–]justgimmieaname 10 points 3 hours ago

yeah, I'm a bit stupefied. 1 year ago I was 90% sure the Fed was gonna come down like a hammer as soon as the price broke 1,000 USD

[–]pyalot 15 points 4 hours ago

Who'd have thunk Yellen would educate Manchin... poo poo gets real.

[–]tedrick111 -3 points 4 hours ago

Anyone who "gets" money to the extent that a fed chairman does probably owns some bitcoin right about now.

[–]evoorhees 22 points 5 hours ago

In 3... 2... 1...

"Manchin calls for increased powers at Federal Reserve to protect American consumers."

[–]_professorcrypto_ 4 points 5 hours ago*

Yellen yelling at Joe: "Stop this nonsense".

[–]Anen-o-me 4 points 4 hours ago

Yellen gets it:

"It's not so easy to regulate Bitcoin because there's no central issuer or network operator. This is a decentralized, global [entity]."

And this is an admission of extreme difficulty for governments everywhere. Hooray! :D

[–]superfetatoire 11 points 5 hours ago

This will hopefully quiet down the tinfoil hat rage redditors that look at regulators through a rifle scope. It seems that the government is adopting a very sane and reasonable attitude towards crypto currencies.

[–]Dumbhandle 1 point 3 hours ago

Yellen has been given the duty to steer the ship through the iceberg fields - an impossible task. She is not going to bring about the collapse by shutting off the spigot. I feel funny about giving her kudos for a great bitcoin answer to a statement from an intellectually challenged senator, but that was nicely done. She does not seem too bad for having been assigned something impossible. They all know their time is limited and it's all going down. I kind of like her.

[–]fragdemuerte 1 point 2 hours ago

Very good news! Yellen made a very smart statement today, proving that Senator Manchin is a dolt. Very accurate response to say that "Bitcoin doesn't touch banks." That's because bitcoin goes around banks. It's a means of transferring wealth outside of the banks. We'll see what FinCen says now... I think we're going to be free-and-clear pretty soon. Mt. Gox is dead, and opposition is shrinking.

A bitcoin interpersonal network.

1: no risk of lost keys, keys can be recovered through several security questions and text message

2: know who you are sending to, everyone will have a unique wallet linked to their interpersonal page

3: when you send funds they appear like a post on someone's wall, obviously these are private between the sender and receiver of the funds.

4: automatically selects correct fee so that the transaction goes through instantly

Random Gox Speculation for Today: FBI and desperation. (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 7 minutes ago by Hunterbunter

So here it is:

Karpele is under a gag order, and the main cold wallet is frozen because the FBI want to stop criminals laundering money on Gox from being able to move it out, while they track it down.

He tried (and was allowed) to keep running as normal, but needed access to the frozen funds to keep going, and couldn't get it, causing a freeze on btc withdrawals. USD withdrawals were already hindered by bank delays, causing an increase in btc withdrawals beyond regular deposits.

Shutdown was caused after either pressure from mounting civil suits regarding withdrawals or FBI interdiction.

Meanwhile, the main deposit coins are still there, and being worked over by the FBI. In order to continue trading, he lied about stolen coins using a bs but plausible 'TM did it" excuse, to get some trading funds, but it was taken very badly. He couldn't say anything to correct anyone, and had to eat the resignation. TM was just a recent problem, and didn't make any sense under scrutiny, and he couldn't backtrack after it went sour because of the gag. Desperation to keep the exchange running drove him to seek support from other exchanges who ... reasonably believed he was retarded and threw him under the bus. He wasn't retarded, just his story was.

This fits what karpeles has actually said, eg "more or less true", "temporarily unavailable", "9gag batman", and the fact that known mtgox addresses are still sitting there with vast sums of coins unused. It obviously calls into question everything everyone else has claimed to know about what's going on.

I think there is one thing that's quite certain. No one has any clue what is actually going on behind the scenes at gox except for gox and the US govt.

After The Huge Bitcoin Heist, We Ask: What The Hell Is Bitcoin, Anyway?
February 26, 2014
By: Owen Reuther

You may have read rumors recently about a heist that saw around $350 million being stolen from something called Mt. Gox. And you may then have read slightly further and seen that the currency stolen was called "Bitcoin," at which point, you probably shrugged and moved on, figuring it was probably something to do with those crazy kids with their World Of Warcraft and their Facebook and smartphones and all-night discotheques with the fancy cocktails. But wait! Bitcoins are a real thing, and someday - maybe someday soon - they may even be relevant to your life. So in the interest of pretending we're occasionally useful, here's what you need to know about Bitcoins.

Okay, smartass, what the hell is a Bitcoin?

Short version: It's just an alternative form of currency, and it can be used to buy pretty much anything, provided the seller accepts it. Although described as a crypto-currency, certain physical retailers, cafés, and restaurants around the country accept Bitcoins now, so it's not just relegated to an Internet currency anymore - there's even a Bitcoin ATM in Austin, Texas.

So why is Bitcoin kinda associated with more, uh, illegal kinda stuff?

Weellll, it's a pretty popular form of payment on the Dark Web. See, the Dark Web is a shady region of the Internet (because nerds love giving things awesome names); a sort of virtual underbelly far from Google's searchbots where criminal things go down. If you know what you're doing, you can buy anything from a brick of heroin to a machine gun to an assassin online, and the heavily-encrypted Bitcoin tends to be the currency of choice because it allows you to safely make a payment without entering your credit card details. After Silk Road - a sort of Amazon.com for drugs and other bad poo poo - got shut down, a lot of the news reports kind of lumped Bitcoin in with Silk Road, so it's still unfortunately associated with those kinds of nefarious activities.

So how do you go about acquiring these Bitcoins, then?

It's actually pretty simple.

Step 1: Set up a digital Bitcoin wallet using easily downloadable software.
Step 2: Exchange your money, either directly from your bank account or using a credit card, for Bitcoins. This is done through a Bitcoin exchange market such as Mt. Gox, which was, until yesterday, the largest and most important Bitcoin market in the world.
Step 3: Purchase things with your Bitcoins from vendors who will accept them.

As with all currencies, value is based on popular consensus. For example, we can’t hand our landlord an issue of Maxim Magazine and expect to pay our rent with it, but if, one day, people decided old issues of Maxim Magazine were the most valuable things on Earth (which we pray for every day), we would instantly become ridiculously wealthy. The point is, if enough people agree that something has value, or more importantly, if someone is willing to exchange goods or services for something, it becomes valuable. People in the digital world have agreed to assign value to Bitcoins, so whether you like it or not, they’re worth something.

So...is Maxim going to be lecturing us on digital currencies from now on, instead of showing us pictures of sexy girls and articles about farting?

No, it's just this one. Normal service will resume...now.

5: ease of funding. Because it is linked to your phone, you simply use your android go or itunes account to make an inapp purchase to load up. (we're talking regular dumb highschoolers and college kids here, most highschoolers don't have a understanding of a bank account or checks anymore.

So what does Mark Karpeles deserve? (self.Bitcoin)

What does everyone think is a fair punishment for this guy? Life in prison? Assassination? He's already cost some people their entire lives and his actions have likely resulted in at least a couple of suicides so far.

I think life in prison is pretty fair.

[–]voluntaryistmitch 2 points 23 minutes ago

He should have all of his assets taken to recompensate his victims and then work for the rest of his life to try to repay them.

[–]tldrtldrtldr 1 point 59 minutes ago

I am down voting this because I don't think assassination is an option. Scam or not, this shouldn't even be asked.

[–]eldormilon 2 points 56 minutes ago

Not necessarily disagreeing with you on an ideological level, but in a world in which a $7000 rocket can kill multiple people who engaged in no crimes at all, how much value does the life of a person have if that person has destroyed the lives of others?

[–]benjaminsdad 1 point 28 minutes ago

Death via bitcoin bounty on his head.

[–]Prattler26 0 points 1 hour ago

Forced labour until he repays his debts.

[–]callmark81345501529 0 points 57 minutes ago

We need to know what he knows before we could think what a fair punishment is.

I say, give him a real incentive to share the truth to the world.

Seriously, someone force him to share the whole truth. Give him a polygraph and a brain scan lie detector, on video!

It could be pay per view, with bitcoins, to support the victims. Then, the victims can call in and ask questions, for more bitcoins, of course. Finally, he'll be put into the worlds first Running Man (see the movie), which you can watch via pay per view / bitcoins.

Give it to Netflix.

Netflix, meet Mark Karpeles, & Bitcoin.

He should be charged with fraud and spend a prison sentence. A message needs to be sent that you have a responsibility when dealing with people's earnings. Mandatory dual authentication would be a start of due diligence.
