except it ran on an amazon cloud server which he stopped paying for, lol

other things he lost:

any tor messages

any irc logs

anything from before he broke the business out into its own website

but mostly, records of any transactions he made not directly into and out of depositors' accounts. i.e. the loans he forwarded and the payback of principal and interest from the people who actually earned a return.

because, he deleted the private keys from his wallet.dat file for all these addresses once the dude didn't pay him back the 202k coins. he says you could go through the blockchain though and reconstruct it though.

so he can't actually prove his assertion that he earned profits by re-lending, rather than just accumulating deposits.

ButterFly Labs Miner Caught on Fire... (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 3 minutes ago by Index_Dot_Zach

Hey guys,

So, as the title implies... I was one of the suckers who bought into the whole ButterFly labs gimmick a year ago. I ordered the 10Gh/sec miner and had to wait nearly 9 months to get it. It finally came back in January this year and I don't even think it's worth running to be honest.

But regardless, I kept it running most of the time because it wasn't using too much power.

I was just sitting at my computer playing a game, the miner sits on my desk next to my monitor. All of a sudden the miner shuts off, fans and all, and was silent. A few seconds later it starts sparking on the inside and I saw flames through the air vents. So I quickly unplugged it and run with it into my kitchen to place it on the granite counter-top.

This isn't supposed to be a sob story or anything, but as a young guy I just wanted to know what my options are for this situation. As in, how should I go about dealing with this with Butterfly Labs? I know it's nearly impossible to get a hold of them, but at the end of the day they sold me a faulty product that could have potentially been a hazard. I mean, what if I wasn't home when this happened?

Does anything think there is any legal action that I can take on my behalf against ButterFly labs?

Thanks!

hey, reddit found that thinkprogress article calling bitcoiners mostly a bunch of rich white manchildren

[–]totes_meta_bot 11 points 11 hours ago

This thread has been linked to from elsewhere on reddit.

[/r/MensRights] As a bitcoiner, you used to be an "idiot", now you're "privileged", and in a while you'll "owe society". (re:Think Progress article - "Bitcoin: By The Privileged, For The Privileged") [x-post from /r/bitcoin]

[–]TheSelfGoverned 88 points 12 hours ago

We were also "pathetic nerds living in their parent's basement" before we became "privileged".

[–]Helvetian616 18 points 8 hours ago

"banking and government regulation has failed at points, but it’s worked more often than a libertarian system would."

Because "people of color" love government. What a bunch of racists, turning broad correlations into such conclusions.

[–]riccardb 6 points 3 hours ago

All statistics do is prove something about the people they sampled. Obviously it's ridiculous to think that only white people distrust government, but this is typical progressive propaganda. They are hoping that non-whites will read this and believe it. This is true about so many things that progressives say. The only thing you can count on with progressives, is that they will always push government as the answer to every single problem.

[–]Helvetian616 5 points 3 hours ago

Put another way, for the progressive, there's no problem where violence and coercion isn't the answer.

[–]juror_chaos 2 points 3 hours ago

Ironically, you'd think their favorite pastime would be some violent video game, but no they hate video games almost as much.

[–]Helvetian616 2 points 2 hours ago

This is just because no one has created a game where you can send out drones to kill white middle-class boys in their parents basement.

[–]king-six 11 points 8 hours ago*

I'm new to this term, so just to make sure: if I live in a country with 98% racial/national homogeneity am I too exploiting my privileged position over the minorities?

Or maybe I benefit from exploitation of the underprivileged in other countries?

Just wanna make sure I know to whom I owe my fair share of bitcoins, even though society was first calling me an idiot for my interest in this worthless thing, then a lucky nerd when it gained value, then a delusional libertarian for thinking it'll continue to rise, and now apparently a privileged exploiter.

[–]TheSelfGoverned 14 points 7 hours ago*

Yes. First of all, only white males are privileged exploiters. If you're a female or minority then you owe nothing. Second of all, educating yourself on internet forums is an activity only available to white males, because only white males have access to a computer and internet in 2014 - again, exploitation.

Therefore, I would say you owe women and minorities at least 50% of your coins. Oh, and you'll have to trust a bunch of white males to do the proper and fair distributing.

[–]CoinBroker 4 points 8 hours ago

These are really just FUD articles under the guise of trying to help the poor and impoverished.

[–]ninja8ball 44 points 12 hours ago

"privilege"

Well I'm done with that article.

[–]moonwhale 22 points 11 hours ago

Always attacking the people, never the technology. Look, you don't have to be very privileged to get into bitcoin, you just have to have an open mind.

[–]I_Am_Soulhuntre 53 points 12 hours ago

Of course. This is how collectivists think - as soon as you get something, anything for them to confiscate they will manufacture a "privilege" they feel you have and justify their theft.

Surely this can't be a shock to anyone?

[–]Adrian-X 9 points 10 hours ago

It's ironic that the Bitcoin demographic are the one's who have the least access to any public or affirmative action programs, and are paying the highest price for housing and retirement.

I think that's the attraction

[–]Market-Anarchist 8 points 8 hours ago

Rich basketball players are privileged with tall genes, often times having grown up in situations where they were surrounded by highly talented basketball players from a young age.

Should they feel guilty too?

[–]I_Am_Soulhuntre 0 points 6 hours ago

According to many folks in victimization culture activism, yes. Not only that, but their achievements are to be disregarded.

And that is, essentially, the point. To enable them to discount anything achieved by others while simultaneously claiming their own poor performance is laudable because they are so disadvantaged.

The end result is that the only folks worthy of praise are the ones who can claim the most disadvantages - which leads directly to the persecution olympics you see so often in the "social justice" community.

[–]JbanHammer 13 points 10 hours ago

I didn't need much privilege to buy $140 worth of bitcoin a few years back.

But you need a lot of blind idiocy to cling to such victimhood as this die hard liberal article.

[–]mustyoshi 3 points 8 hours ago

I'm a 20 yo who lives with 6 other people, works at McDonalds, while going to school.

Bitcoin is how I plan to repay my student loans.

[–]lizardflix 3 points 4 hours ago

The writer wants to be first in line to condemn anybody who may actually benefit from taking the huge risks of investing in bitcoin. Sort of a twist on Minority Report, condemn before the fact.

Be warned poor people, if you actually make the effort to get ahead and succeed, you'll be hated for it.

[–]welfarecuban 5 points 7 hours ago

When I was growing up, most of the "straight white guys" in my area were poor and largely powerless, just like most people in town.

Bitcoin has interesting potential in terms of reaching "the unbanked," and I'll be interested to see that develop over time.

But let's not pretend that a "straight white man" facing eviction from the trailer park has much "privilege" of any sort...

[–]Impetusin 4 points 9 hours ago

You know the libs don't like Bitcoin when articles come out talking about Bitcoiners being white privileged men.

I like this part "The people who most need alternatives to the current banking system are seeking policy alternatives, not libertarian stabs at undermining the state." Reads like some sort of Marxist propaganda.

[–]sammrr 6 points 10 hours ago

cue black/gay/feminist saying "check your privilege! it's totally your fault that my life sucks because you're a straight white male!"

[–]UsesMemesAtWrongTime 1 point 29 minutes ago*

It's a simple consequence of not understanding the concept of risk & reward.

You take a risk (putting resources into bitcoin) and you should reap the rewards (and reap the losses as well).

You'd probably find similar demographics in tech startup founders. Yet, I don't see a thinkprogress article saying these startup people are only rich because of privilege.

Nara Sushi in San Francisco STOPS accepting Bitcoin... (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 47 minutes ago by Marotta117

I've been spending at all the local places in SF that accept Bitcoin over the last few weeks and decided to check Nara Sushi off my list. I drive all the way down there to find out they STOPPED accepting Bitcoin a few weeks ago…

Here is the original thread when they started accepting it: http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1e7l70/nara_sushi_in_nob_hill_san_francisco_now_accepts/

http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1ks33t/just_ate_at_nara_sushi_they_need_practice/

I was honestly kind of pissed. I drove all the way down there and his excuse was "ohh not enough people are using it/we aren't getting any business for it". So he went to the effort to actually delete his wallet instead of just leaving it up and keeping it as a payment option. After hearing this, I looked at him and said "Well sir, you just lost my Business!" and walked out refusing to eat there.

Frankly, I was disappointed that a business began to accept Bitcoin, then after testing it out for a while decided to remove it. I hope all the Bitcoin users here are actually spending their coins as well as hoarding them, because the Bitcoin economy will only continue to grow if we spend them!

Edit: I just removed Nara Sushi from Coinmap.org

[–]Marotta117[S] 1 point 29 minutes ago

From a managerial standpoint I think it's counterproductive to remove a payment option from your business, no matter how frequent it's use it.

He just lost his first customer for not accepting Bitcoin today - I hope that sticks with him. (Chances are he forgot about me the second I walked out though).

[–]Marotta117[S] 2 points 18 minutes ago

Consumers do not "agree" with that. The average consumer still hasn't even been exposed to Bitcoin at all or even know what it is for that matter….

If everyone in the world knew exactly how the Bitcoin protocol worked and wasn't plagued by mainstream media's negative portrayal of Bitcoin I believe it'd be much clearer to see the benefits and I truly believe as infrastructure continues to grow over the next few years that a much larger portion of the world will begin using Bitcoin. Warren Buffett was right (self.Bitcoin)

submitted 29 minutes ago by cqm

Warren Buffett quote of the day: "Only buy something that you'd be perfectly happy to hold if the market shut down for 10 years."

Warren Buffett recently said that he doesn't think bitcoin would be around in 10 or 20 years. But this really wasn't the damning dismissal of bitcoin that the perpetual middle class 401k bagholders thought it was.

His condemnation is based on that investing mentality he created.

If I invested based on that mentality, then OF COURSE I wouldn't touch bitcoin or anything tech related. And bitcoin WOULD be a failure if it's market completely disappeared for practically any time period.

I don't invest "Warren Buffett" style, but this is a PSA. In case you hear anybody else repeat what Buffett says about Bitcoin.

[–]CryptoMonger 1 point 6 minutes ago

Keep in mind that the real star here is the invention of the blockchain. So to be honest Bitcoin might be replaced within that time period so investors probably should be on their toes as to what is on the horizon. The problem with Buffett and people his age is that they don't seem to recognize that their world view is becoming more and more obsolete every day. Eventually everybody from his generation will be dead and nobody will understand or care about their life perspective.

[–]superfly2 1 point 1 minute ago

Wait so if I do believe that Bitcoin will be around in 10 years, using his logic, then of course I should invest? Warren Buffet aka the oracle of Omaha is one of the most respected investors of all time. His mantra is "invest in what you know" he doesn't understand Bitcoin and therefore would never invest in it. This is not a condemnation, Bitcoin is not trains or insurance, it is something new. He once said that he would never invest in Google or Apple because he does not know how to value such companies. New technology is much harder to understand, predict, and model than traditional businesses that have been around for a hundred years.

Even if there is damning evidence of bitcoin theft at MtGOX I don't believe the government will assist any of you because of how closely tied governments are to the banking industry.

I think the banking industry will be able to successfully ham string any kind of investigation into the bitcoin theft.
I'm not anti bitcoin and I'm very fascinated by it but not willing to take the plunge because I don't understand it completely from a numerical point of view.

I believe that there will be concrete evidence of the bitcoin theft at MtGOX but I don't think the bitcoin user base has enough pull with the governments to actually have anything done about it.

Are people here willing to take justice into their own hands , or will they wait passively for the government to do their job for them?

This isn't supposed to be a sob story or anything, but as a young guy I just wanted to know what my options are for this situation. As in, how should I go about dealing with this with Butterfly Labs? I know it's nearly impossible to get a hold of them, but at the end of the day they sold me a faulty product that could have potentially been a hazard. I mean, what if I wasn't home when this happened?

Does anything think there is any legal action that I can take on my behalf against ButterFly labs?

Thanks!
