Not even close. The Framers of the 1802 Ohio Constitution thought that Congress was granting them the Detroit River as well as exclusive access to Lake Erie. It was one of the many issues that complicated Michigan's admission to the Union and caused the Toledo War.

Would you like some politically-loaded maps?

Let's talk about vaccinations in the Netherlands. Young children get a vaccination against measles, mumps and rubella (abbreviated BMR in Dutch), and another one against diphtheria, pertussis, poliomyelitis, and tetanus (DKTP). There's some other vaccinations, but these two are often considered the most important ones.

Every few years (usually when an epidemic happens) there's a big debate about the fact that parents can choose to have their children not vaccinated. One issue is 'herd immunity'. See, vaccinations do not work for every single child. That's not a problem, as long as enough of their peers are vaccinated. In that case there aren't enough hosts for the viruses to be able to spread to those who aren't immune.

There are two main groups of people who choose to not have their children vaccinated. One group consists of the followers of anthroposophy. The other consists of members of the very strict and traditionalist Reformed Church. I believe the first group is the largest, but they live all over the country, so they are mostly protected by herd immunity. However, the members of the Reformed Church mostly live in a small band of towns across the country. It's known as the Dutch Bible Belt.

These maps are made by the National Institute for Public Health. Basically, what they've done is started with herd immunity numbers: everyone is protected if at least 90% of the population has the DKTP vaccination. The number is 95% for BMR, because the viruses work differently.

The municipalities where everyone is considered protected are in white. In case the vaccination percentage is too low, they have calculated (I don't know how) the percentage of 2-year olds at risk because of the lack of herd immunity. That's what the colours indicate. The difference between the maps is caused by the fact that BMR needs a higher percentage for herd immunity. In any case, the maps show the extent of the Bible Belt quite well.

For a comparison, here's a map of the percentage of voters voting for the SGP, which is a political party strongly related to the Reformed Church.

Seriously though it's pretty awful to consider there are still nutjobs like that with actual political clout in a Western European nation.

There's a pretty huge Dutch Reformed community in Western Michigan that is a huge bloc in the Michigan GOP, if I recall correctly.

Though in terms of chest-beating nationalism who's the worst offender on the continent? From anecdotal experience I saw few German flags while in Berlin, but a glut of Union Jacks while in London. (France is a given here.)

It's also even more common in Finland where it makes even more sense without the bridge. Considering the connection is so narrow and how restricted travel to Russia still is, looking from here to southwards it's really easy to kind of develop a more island-like thinking. It was really quite eye-opening to see how easy inter-country travel is in Central Europe as it's opposed to here.

It's really a question of geography and transportaiton more than any kind of chest-bumping or provincialism, especially as it's rarely said with the kind of pride you get from certain Brits. I personally would love to see the Tallinn-Helsinki tunnel realising one day, it would be a very good first step in starting to integrate us to actually Europe proper rather than its outskirts.

But as Skeleton Jelly said, it's a very much a matter of geography and distance... hell a colleague takes his car from Stockholm to Portugal each summer, and he sometimes mentions the feeling of accomplishment when getting to Germany, as it means he's already covered like 1/3 of the trip (time-wise, atleast).

Yeah i hear it all the time in reference to Denmark and Skåne. Often as a pro argument for living in Malmö or Copenhagen ("closer to the continent!"), or as an explanation for why Danes are stereotypically more laidback and have more liberal policies towards things like alcohol, prostitution and stuff like that which they share more with "continental" Europe.

:downs: I just grabbed the first map I saw on Google and edited accordingly. Thought it was just a generic map of the Great Lakes region.

The Enabling Act of 1802 drew Ohio's border at the southern most point of Lake Michigan, which was thought at the time to be parallel with Lake St. Clare. When the error was discovered, the Ohio government tried to revise their borders to encompass the Maumee River Watershed, but the matter died in committee.

I'm reminded of this quote:

Frederick Engels posted:

Scandinavianism was the pattern of the Danes' appeals for Swedish and Norwegian support. But as always happens with the Christian-Teutonic nation, a dispute immediately arose as to who was the genuine Christian-Teuton, the true Scandinavian. The Swede contended that the Dane had become "Germanized" and had degenerated, the Norwegian said the same of the Swede and the Dane, and the Icelander of all three. Obviously, the more primitive a nation is, the more closely its customs and way of life resemble those of the Old Norse people, the more "Scandinavian" it must be.

Uhm, that thread is crazy. I rarely venture outside Debate Disco and the games forum, is GBS always like that? And I thought we need proper punctuation on SA?

After I had to read that bullshit in GBS, have some maps about "races" from the turn of the 19th century:

Red = "light" whites
Pink = "dark" whites
Orange = mongoloids
Brown = negroids

So Arabs are whites then? Does that mean they were okay, or were they still inferior to "real" whites? Made by an English biologist. And look at Britain, I hope he had no political reasons to classify the Celts as "dark" whites.

The reasons were probably near-entirely political, especially British race theorist types really hated the Irish largely because they needed a way to justify what they're doing in Ireland. Whiteness has never really solely - and on those days even mostly - been about how white your skin is. When scientific racism was peaking, it was quite exaggaratedly a deal of "bad guys vs. good guys" or how Asian do you think Slavs really look?

Well, I can't speak for most of the thread, I just jumped in without having read the rest. That thread is pretty much what long-running threads on "controversial" topics come down to though, a diverse mix of trolling, counter-trolling, seriousness and faux-seriousness, often with very little consistency between posts. That's not how every thread in GBS is though.

(And no, GBS does not require proper punctuation.)
