https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9uDA4SPUohw Hey guys, my name is Brandon Hardesty. You might be familiar with who I am from my YouTube, either through my reenactments of scenes from famous movies, or the one time I made faces into a dumb camera and it went dumb viral for some dumb reason. Exhibit A: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPx266rGw3E I realize that I'm partially responsible for making the Internet even more of an awful place than it already was. Since April of 2014, I've been working on a documentary web-series called "No Small Parts." Episode 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCffnFYbsDA Episode 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oSfVSROjdk Here's something of a "DVD extra" to the Vincent Schiavelli episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gu1ENj9p9fc Episode 3 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jfw2AoQzy6Q Episode 4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gRoqKF_j114 Episode 5 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fu2LzcPpjpA Episode 6 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuHDS5281uw Episode 7 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqcY-zWnHog Episode 8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjF8UrRPar0 Episode 9 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ofhh9fsWhAs Episode 10 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLKvPAX7qkg Episode 11 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qi6a2BHx_e4 Episode 12 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FvHGpPDtvak Episode 13 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hi0tAryAbLE Episode 14 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=npnu_39tN5Q Episode 15 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-o7y46538dU Episode 16 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWbHmxrDh7U Episode 17 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2wLNq50MZgc Mini-Episode 1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iEdl_sRTi4 Mini-Episode 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZHMQp9zFqGU I've been acting professionally in Los Angeles for the past six years, and this series is sort of a passion project of mine. For me, It helps to be obsessed with something so I don't go stir crazy when I'm going for weeks or months without an acting job. Being a character actor myself (and constantly insuring people that I'm not the guy from 21 Jump Street), I find these people fascinating. I think it started when I saw the documentary "That Guy... Who Was in That Thing," which is a similar concept. I think it's so interesting that an actor can work and make a healthy living, and yet never really attain the status of a Clooney or Pitt, or that an actor could be nominated for an Oscar, but still manage to fly under the radar. We see them, and we forget them, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. It means they're doing their job. I write and narrate everything myself. This series has also been an education in editing. I've slowly learned how to work with Final Cut Pro X, and I can't imagine using anything else right now (even though I've heard it's awful, and Final Cut Pro 7 is better, or maybe even Adobe Premiere). It takes a long time to get an episode done just from the amount of research I need to do for each subject: any books they've written or any official autobiographies, not to mention the time it takes to sift through their IMDb credits and find footage of all the projects they've done. Then I watch all their projects and get a feel for their work and career. I also like to properly credit every project I can with the title, year of release, production company, and distributor. What do I hope to achieve with this? Like anybody, I'd love to be able to monetize it in some way. I operate on a zero budget and sometimes will go out of pocket to get an obscure, out-of-print movie or get one of their books to read. I'm not sure No Small Parts would ever work on television considering the rights to all the projects that would have to be secured. This seems to work as a web series since I can use whatever footage I want if it's for educational or critique purposes, which this is a little bit of both, I guess. I set up a Patreon account for viewers to contribute to No Small Parts: https://www.patreon.com/nosmallparts I've had some of my subscribers suggest this, and I thought it was a good idea. Same goes for you guys: if you like what you see and you want to contribute in some way, Just click the link. So that's No Small Parts. Check it out, let me know what you think! I'm open to any critiques. If something's off or unclear, I want to work hard and make sure I don't make the same mistake in future episodes. Don't really watch anything like this on youtube usually but I gave this a shot because I liked your other stuff. I think they're very well made, with a good pace throughout. I can't believe I just watched a 25 minute long video about scatman crothers. You make good points too. Subbed and will be looking forward to more.

Out of curiosity, what actors/actresses would you like to see an episode about? That goes for anyone who's watched this. I've been trying to think of who to do next. I have a mini-episode I want to do called "One Line Wonders," and have it focus on three actors who are famous for the one line they had in a film.

I was actually wondering if you already had a list of names you were working your way through. I just watched the Scatman Crothers episode and you're really knocking these out of the park. I especially dug in this episode how you dealt with the issue of race. It would be tempting to gloss over certain aspects of his films, but you took the time to provide a context through which to view his career. That's awesome. I'm curious: the first three actors you've done are all deceased. Did you choose them specifically so that you could cover their entire body of work? As far as suggestions, I've got a few: Xander Berkley Kurt Fuller James Rebhorn E.G. Daily S. Epatha Merkerson Mercedes Ruehl You could do an episode (or maybe just a mini) about characters actors who broke into leading roles like Paul Giammati, Philip Seymour Hoffman, etc. Anyway, I'm loving this series. It's hard waiting for each episode but totally worth it when I see how much research goes into each one.

Honestly, my first motivation for picking them was I would research them a little bit, and I just kept digging since they interested me. If I knew that I could get an interview with a character actor that's still alive and working, I would absolutely do that. I wouldn't want to do an episode on someone like that unless I could interview them. Hibernator posted:As far as suggestions, I've got a few: I'll look into them. I have a rough list in my head, but nothing solid. I've been thinking about actors like Michael Jeter, Pruitt Taylor Vince, or Keith David. I also want to do an episode about Crispin Glover 'cause the man is just so odd, but I don't think he fits the type of "Hey! Who is that guy?" Maybe a mini episode about him.

Great videos. Here are some suggestions for future videos: Al Jeong Michael Berryman Frank McRae Tom Noonan Daniel von Bargen Stephen Root Michael Ironside The last two might be too big, but, still suggestions. e: Just noticed Stephen Root in the opening credits. e2: I watched these in reverse order, so I look like an idiot for posting Stephen Root. I look forward to his episode. Hockles fucked around with this message at 07:20 on Oct 21, 2014 |

That could give me a chance to talk about child actors. I was also trying to think of actors who are really unusual looking, or may have physical or even mental deformities. Pruitt Taylor Vince has a condition where his eyes involuntarily dart back and forth. Carel Struycken is 7 feet tall, and does a lot of non-speaking roles (Lurch in the "Addams Family" movies). I also want to do an episode on a dwarf actor, but I don't know if doing one on Peter Dinklage would work, or Warwick Davis. I think for sure, I'm going to do the next episode on three character actors who are pretty much famous for one line, and give them each seven or eight minutes: Wesley Mann: "I think he took his wallet!" - Back to the Future: Part II Priscilla Allen: "Two weeks!" - Total Recall Stanley B. Herman: "rear end to rear end!" - Requiem For a Dream I'd love to do some of the bigger names, but if I do, I'd really like to interview them. If I can do this episode and actually interview Wesley Mann and Stanley B. Herman (who both live in Los Angeles), I think I could build up a little more legitimacy that would allow me to interview other subjects. I'd interview Priscilla Allen, but she died in 2007 from lymphoma. Stanley B. Herman has actually gotten back to me a few times after I sent him an e-mail.

ultrabindu posted:That's quite a list. How long does it take you to turn an episode around? Seems like you've got enough actors to last well into next year. This list would last me a lifetime right now. It takes a long time for me to do an episode. First, I research. I get a hold of every project I can that has the actor in it and watch everything. I don't watch everything all the way through sometimes, but just enough to understand the context of their character in the film, TV show, whatever. Then I get a hold of any books or autobiographies they've written. While I'm researching, I'm writing out a script for the episode. This whole process has taken me 2-3 weeks, sometimes longer if I end up too busy with auditions or acting classes. Then, I have to edit. I've been learning how to use Final Cut Pro X, and I've gotten better at it, but it's still a bitch to edit. Any film or TV show I have on my hard drive that isn't an .mp4 has to be converted using Handbrake. I queue up a list and let it convert for a couple days. Then I'm ready to edit everything. My computer runs pretty slow, unfortunately. I'm using a mid-2011 Macbook Pro with the RAM maxed out, and it's still barely keeping up with what I'm dishing it. The more clips I'm importing into the timeline, the slower it runs, especially if I'm editing something in HD. I'm thinking of actually starting a Kickstarter for an upgraded Macbook. It would just make things so much easier. I don't need something ridiculous like a Mac Pro, not editing 4K or anything, but man, there are days when I'm so frustrated with editing on this thing, I just want to throw it out the window. Because of that, the editing can take up to a month. And yeah, I think Clint Howard is a good idea. The history of child actors in Hollywood is really fascinating, and that's something that would be fun to get into.

I can see by the amount of views you definitely have a niche that's interested in these and your like/dislike ratio is golden so the content is right. When you have 1,080 likes and 4 dislikes you're basically getting a couple stupid contrarian votes. Movie aficionados will fully appreciate a thirty minute comprehensive look but the typical Youtuber probably won't. You might cast a wider net ($$$) if you had a condensed version of each of these (I could see myself watching dozens of those rapid fire). However, the longer ones are things I'd add to my watch later playlist to watch on the Roku later. Do your long one to fulfill the obsession and then somehow condense it and call it a quick take/minisode or something. Just my personal opinion. What I love about this videos is how they teach you just as much about the subject as a person as about them as an actor. It never feels like an half-hour video because it's paced so well. The only thing I can criticize is that the "pop"-sound you sometimes use, like when the arrows appear in the video of you as a kid, is a teeny-tiny bit too loud.
