Erk is a perfectly fine and servicable mage. Jumping all the way back into the Teens where "A Good character is not exclusively a character with a tonne of flashing green numbers." Most enemies have no Res, Erk has decent growths, and he's avaliable for a good while. Then you'll get Pent, in case Erk didn't turn out. Both stomp all over Nino, who as an Est shows up ridiculously late and who could, if you want to dedicate the time to grinding her out, do the same job as an average Pent or Erk who you didn't devote all that time to. Just... play FE like you play FE, use characters, go with the ones that work, drop the ones who fall behind.

I do drop the ones that fall behind. That just also happens to include Erk in every playthrough I've done of this game. Yeah, yeah, confirmation bias, I know.

Erk isn't bad but he's not great either. His stats are barely any better than Lugh from FE6 (pretty much just 1 point more in everything), which, considering the general inflation from 6 to 7, is pretty damning. Erk being around for awhile and being a mage definitely helps his case, but if he had any competition at all his position would be a lot shakier. Heck, even Prissy has the advantage of a horse, once you promote her.

Pent has A staves and actual concrete durability so he'll always be better once he shows up. Another thing to know is that Marcus doesn't stop being good until the last few maps on HHM and never slows down in EHM as long as you give him boss kills and maybe a Speedwing and Dracoshield.

This is almost right, except Pent is for always, not just if Erk doesn't turn out.

Endorph posted:Knights? Knights will usually get some other weapon type on promotion, and they're armored units, a different type of unit then Soldiers. Soldiers are like Myrmidons, Brigands/Pirates and their promoted forms. They fill a unit niche of basically being specialists with a weapon type. They thus embody the traits of the weapon. Lance's are "balanced" compared to the light and fast swords and the heavy and slow axes. An armored Knight, being a slow defense unit, doesn't work as a Lance specialist. The playable Soldiers fit this pretty well, being fairly well balanced between speed, strength and accuracy.

You say that like it's a bad thing. But for real if you have a GBA, DS, 3DS, Game Cube, Wii, or Wii U there are more Fire Emblem games than Awakening available to you. Of course, if all you have is the 3DS then you only have Awakening and Shadow Dragon but it's the thought that counts.

FE7 is great because once I had Serra tank in place of my front-line fighters because they were being bad and kept dying. It was one of the HHM chapters where you have to defend a throne with a somewhat split spawn. No matter who I subbed in it just wasn't working out. Before resetting for a fourth or fifth time, maybe to try something cheeky by bringing less units, I sent Serra up front almost as a joke and she killed everything without taking a hit. She'd only just promoted too; she remained my best caster and one of my best units for the rest of the run. And that's why I'm the only person I know who actually uses Serra. e: FE7 remains my favourite Fire Emblem though PoR is pretty close. I don't like having too much "extra" on my FE, and Awakening was the worst offender in that regard. Desuwa fucked around with this message at 02:06 on Dec 4, 2014 |

One thing that kinda irritates me with with Serra is just how goddamn long her supports take. I'm perfectly happy to spend 30 turns on a cleared map just doing "End Turn" for most unit's supports, but Serra's supports take a long time even doing that. What usually ends up happening is that half my army is maxed out on supports while Serra's just finally getting to B-level; I can't imagine how you'd get any of her supports playing quickly.

The Iron Rose posted:definitely the best and most cohesive story out of the lot. That... is not true. FE7 has a really cohesive story up until you get to the middle of the game and then it just sort of twiddles its thumbs before repeating the same climax at the end of the game. I equate it to walking in on someone getting changed, everything was fine up until that point, getting in the car, heading down to their house, going to check on them. And then you're just awkwardly sitting down, maybe looking at some of the things they got and then they go "Okay now we're ready."

FE7 is pretty basic as FEs go, but the game is built around that fact is a solid entry because of it. Yeah, it's on the easier side throughout most of the game but it is fun seeing huge numbers and crit chances on your side. One of these days I might actually play HHM, but probably not on the VC release because I don't really want to play through the game twice to unlock it. Also, the GBA spritework is fantastic as always.
